Hi guys,

Our company used MapInfo for several years, we are trying now to use MapServer,

The extensions of files used for MapInfo  are : TAB, WOR, ID, IND, DAT, MAP,

How to convert or use those files with MapServer?

I already did the installation of MapServer on Windows using this one: ms4w-2.3.1-setup.exe 142 KB (contains MapServer 5.2.1)

I did a full installation

Thanks

Regards

Mohamad,

You can directly use mapinfo files with MapServer - just reference the
.TAB file in the CONNECTION field and OGR as the CONNECTIONTYPE.  There
is also (limited) automatic use of styling from mapinfo files.

The MapServer MAP file is the equivalent to a MapInfo Workspace (WOR file).  It defines the layers, symbology, etc.

You can either use the native MapInfo Tables (this is the TAB, ID, IND, DAT, and MAP files) using OGR (see http://www.mapserver.org/input/vector/mapinfo.html for more details).  I found the to be slow, so I convert my MapInfo data to ESRI Shape Files.  This can be done with the Universal Translator included with MapInfo Pro, or with the OGR tools included with MS4W, or I use Safe FME.  All of these can be run from a batch file or command line.

Cheers Ian

First, Thanks Guys for your quick answers,

So this will be my process:

Convert those files (TAB,...) using MapInfo.

My question is here how can I use them on MapServer , is there any tutorial?

I installed on my PC MS4W package.

GMAP application is running, even chameleon samples

Thanks

Mohamad

Hi Guys,

I am newbie to MapInfo and MapServer and I think my questions prove that.

The GeoSetManager of Mapx (that’s what I called Mapinfo) doesn’t support WOR files only GST files

Am I talking about another software?

Thanks

Sorry, but there are no tools for converting WOR or GST files to MapServer MAP files.  I sometimes use QGIS to open the layers and save off a MapServer file.  This provides a starting point but doesn't do the whole job.

Thanks

Regards

RE: [MS4W-Users] Custom Maps

Hi Mohamad,

TAB files can be opened by MapServer (using an OGRCONNECTION).  I find that converting them to ESRI Shapefiles performs better than using native TAB files.  Have a look at the documentation for opening TAB files at http://www.mapserver.org/input/vector/mapinfo.html

Cheers Ian
