DateBk 6-7-8-?

All,

I have been following the requests for features from everyone,  and
feel that some are a bit anxious for a new toy.  not to cut on anyone,
I like toys as much as the next person, but DateBk5 just works.

I work in the software testing field for a living.  I get very
frustrated when "eye-candy" overshadows functionallity.

An example,  I was just talking to the project lead on a highly
complex app,  it has its own language, element recorder, parser,
etc...  He was very happy because they just got a new widget that
would make the interface look awesome.  I asked if the basic
functionallity was there, and he said they have alot of bugs that they
will get to once the facelift is complete.

Am I an idiot?  I want the functionallity, even if it is in geek, to
work rock solid.  then you can put a pretty face on it, and deal with
usability factors.

I think DateBk5 has the functionallity down pat,  still chasing an
occasional bug.  and to note,  bugs at this point of the game are
exceedingly hard to track (mature code the last 1% of errors take 90%
of the time).

I would like to see a today screen similar to what shimon has done,  I
also looked at littleredspiders TMP today, and realy like the adgenda
view.  I like the views, but if the underlying function is not there,
it doesnt work for me.  Now put these pretty baubles on DB5, prehaps
as plugins, and you can extract $ from me.  I know the code just
works,  and the pretty things can be added.

My 2cents

I second that! To each his own but the product is great and I did pay for it
but I am also grateful for it's ability to help me. Good comment by Art and
in no way should others not want what they have expressed it's just I'm a

Well, I don't really consider the ability to add a location to a
meeting, or the ability to copy and paste it, "eye candy." At this
point I have to go to the default calendar application several times a
day because this "eye candy" is lacking. Yes, I know it's because of a
PalmOS change but we need a new version of DB to regain essential
functionality.

Some clarification...  I don't want to (re-)start the whole "what
should DateBk6 contain" thread again, but I just want to point out
that _no one_ mentioned the "Location" field as "eye candy".  CESD has
already made modifcations to DateBk5 for (at the very least
"read-only") functionality for the Location field [which includes the
ability to view the WHOLE Location field to copy/paste into another
app] and has also stated that increased functionality (including the
ability to add/edit Location field data) is already being worked into
the next version of DateBk.

If you're NOT seeing this, then you're NOT using the latest version of
DateBk5 which DOES have that capability.  (The latest version is 5.4a,
s5 just in case you're wondering.)  And if you ARE using the latest
version and you're STILL not seeing the Location, it's because your
_device_ doesn't support it -- so no amount of modification to DateBk5
will solve that "problem" for you.

The "eye candy" that I _believe_ was being referenced was more along
the lines of "graphics" and "menus with color icons".  Clearly,
support for additional fields does _not_ fall into that category and I
don't believe anyone intended for them to be.

Hope that helps. :)

How do you copy the location field?  I have the latest, and I can see
the location field, but I couldn't figure out how to copy the contents...

While viewing the Details for the Event, there is a green "target"
icon that appears below the "+7" button; tapping that icon will bring
up a dialog box containing the entire contents of the Location
field...  The box remains active until you press the "OK" button, so
you can highlight the Location (or any part thereof) and do a Command
stroke (/) and select Copy (the icon that looks like two sheets of paper).

Then just paste it in whatever app you like! :)  Hope that helps. :)

I know how to look at the full location, but when I do that on my Treo
650, I can't select the text of the Location field.  Is that a device
restriction?  I'm using 5.4a,s5.

It shouldn't be restricted to device type (if you can see it).
However, I'm not sure if you can select the text using only the 5-way
navigator...  In other words, you'll have to use your finger/stylus to
select the text.

Nope.  Can't select it using any method (5 way, finger, stylus, etc.).
I really wish I could...

Location field support in DateBk5 is currently read-only.  This is
documented.  Full support, for entering the Location field info, is
coming in a later release.

This is one of the few features (besides more powerful ToDo sorting and arranging) that I
think absolutely needs to be added to DateBk5, and I wonder why it's not there already.

You can already read the data if it's present.
It's already been promised for the next major release.
I wonder why people can't understand that.  There is work, after all,
involved in accessing new fields (that were not even documented by Palm
until recently).

Selecting location field text (was: DateBk 6-7-8-?)

Rats!  I just noticed the same thing--unable on my Treo 650 to
highlight text of location field when it is displayed in the pop-up
window (i.e., after you tap the bull's eye).  Worked fine on my T|T3.

CESD: Can you help us understand this anomoly on the 650?  Thanks!

Hmmm, then perhaps it _is_ restricted to device type...  (Though I
don't know of any reason why it should be; of course, there's a lot of
technical considerations that I'm not fully aware of, too.)  Perhaps
you could submit a question to CESD and ask if it was intentional that
[the ability to highlight/select Location text and copy] is only
available on certain devices.  (I have to think it wasn't or else it
would have been noted...  I think CESD uses a Treo 650 himself, and
while I'm not sure how extensive his use of the Location field is, I
doubt he'd purposefully code to exclude the Treo 650 unless there was
a particularly good reason to do so.  That said, it's more probable he
_expected_ the LITERAL meaning of "read-only" since he's using a Treo
650 and it is the other devices -- like my T3 -- that exhibit the
"unexpected" behavior of being able to copy the Location data.) ;)

Only CESD can say for sure... :)

Actually, since the Treo does not support graffiti, you cannot do
this, and the Menu button is not active, so there is, as I said, no
way to copy the location data whether or not you are using the latest
version of DateBook, which I am.

And more importantly, there's no way to ENTER the location. I have to
go back to the default calendar application to do this.

I'm not sure since I don't have a Treo 650 (even to trial), but there
is no way on a Treo to do a Command stroke?  That seems very unusual
(but I'm not saying it's impossible)...  However, with that said, I
have heard of people using freeware apps (like Graffiti Anywhere) to
make their Treo's graffiti-aware, so that way they CAN do things like
that...

If you can at least highlight the text, there OUGHT to be some way
(even if it's through the use of a 3rd-party app -- free or not) to do
a Copy on the text.  I can't believe that I'm the first person to have
thought of that, so chances are there's _already_ an app out there
that solves that problem for you.

Yes, and that has already been addressed by CESD...  Currently, the
field is "read-only".  However, as he stated -- and as others have
stated, including me -- you can set up a Saved View in DateBk5 that
automatically launches the built-in Calendar app WITH THE SELECTED
EVENT so you can go right to the details of that event and add/edit
the Location data.  No fuss, no muss.  (Yes, it's an "extra" step you
wouldn't have to take if DateBk5 edited the field itself, but this
"solution" is temporary.  CESD has already stated that the next
version of DateBk will have better support for the Location field on
those devices that have it included in the built-in app, including
adding and editing the field data.)

Can we call this a dead horse yet???  It's a known fact.  It's also been
well stated that it will be in the next version of DateBk (DateBk6?)  No
amount of discussion will change it.

Remember the tip I posted some time ago, as this makes it pretty painless to
enter a location field as you do not have to locate the record in the
built-in app - this does it for you....

Cheers!

Here's a useful trick.

There are a couple of times you may want to use the built-in calendar
application to do something. For example, if you want to use Bluetooth and
send an event, currently this has to be done with the built-in application.
Or perhaps you may want to look at the meeting attendees - something that
won't be supported until the next major release. Or perhaps you have an iQue
and want to invoke a GPS link.

The trick is simple:

In View Display Options dialog, put this into the App CreatID: field:

PDat                     (for newer PalmOne devices)
                    or
date                       (for traditional PalmSource type devices)

This is the creator ID for the built-in calendar application. Now when you
have an item selected in DateBk5, tap the NEW button and select LAUNCH APP.
This will launch the built-in calendar app and, more importantly, puts the
insert pointer in that SAME event in the built-in app, so you do not need to
go looking for it in the built-in app - you are right there and can use the
SEND feature, tap on Details to look at the Attendees or on the GPS link,
etc.. That will at least be better in the interim!

Just thought of this today when someone was asking for a better way to get
at the GPS links on a Garmin device....

Cheers!

Using PDat in this tip on my unlocked GSM Treo 650 doesn't give the
intended result. I always get the same event in 2004. If I delete that
event I get another event in 2004. Really too bad, because this is a nice
trick in lieu of the fact that the current DB5 doesn't support sending.

It has nothing to do with the device. Keep in mind that (a) you MUST use a
recent release of DateBk5 that supports the proprietary calendar database,
and (b) it will always find the first occurrence of any repeat event
(although that should not be a problem, as you would want to sent the repeat
event anyway).

This definitely works as many people use it - so there must be some specific
reason why you are not seeing it work on your device...
