The original wii controller is much more sensitive to infrared than the
cheaper rebuilds, btw.. I already checked on that.

The stereo or tv remote control sends pulsed signals, which is not very
precise to the point, I guess. You can use a candle, too.

I have successfully built IR pens from cheap LED (torch) mini pens
available in most electronic stores for less than 3 Euros. You replace
one of 3 batteries by a metal disk of the same size to reduce the
voltage, and replace the LED by a TSAL 6400 IR LED, plus a resistor in
line, which needs to be about 22 Ohm for 3 Volt. If you just use one
battery, you can leave the resistor, but you don't get the maximum
brightness.

The best commercial pen I found so far is "The Groove", which you can
buy at http://www.wiiteachers.com/ for about 30 dollars. It looks
somewhat clumsy compared with a selfbuilt mini pen, but the single AAA
battery lasts longer than two cell micro batteries, and the switch which
allows you to switch on the LED by pressing it against the board, is
really practical.

Hint: If you remove the rubber surrounding of the wii remote, you get a
better angle range to match the board width.

Can't answer that, but I would recommend just ordering one to be send by
mail.

I don't think so. Since the frequency range of the IR pen is fixed, the
only way to distinguish "colors" is probably seding not a constant
signal, but a pulsed signal. gtkwhiteboard can probably not handle this
yet.

But you may be able to assign keys to the outer edges of your board, so
you could just define a hotkey for changing colors in gimp or similar
applications, and click the corresponding area outside of the board in
order to activate it.

In xournal, there are easy to reach buttons for switching colors with
just one pen.

There are thumb rules about where the wiimote is located best, for
example, "use a distance which is about twice the width of the board",
so the wiimote will see the entire board.

Used my stereo IR remote, pressing the volume button, for testing.
Worked great. :)

I installed and used wmgui to debug the connection to the Wiimote, and
used it to see the output from the IR camera. I suspect it will make
it easier to adjust the view of the wiimote when trying to make it see
the entire screen. :)

Anyone know how the different colors are detected with the IR pens
available from <URL:http://www.wiiteachers.com/>. Can gtkwhiteboard
handle multiple colors?

Is there some way to get visible feedback for the calibration? When
using a projector on the whiteboard screen, it would be useful to have
indicators on the corner positions to know where to put the IR pen.

Actually, the LTSP clients do not use DHCP in user space (the IP address is set
by the kernel during boot), and thus the DNS configuration is not fetched from
DHCP. This make it hard to fix this properly.

Multiseat at schools?

Dear list,

apropos money saving (wii-board):

Recently I did another research on "Multiseat". Some years ago, Petter
mentioned that debian package, AFAIR.

Wikipedia told me, that there are even Windows solutions for Multiseat:
You pay approx. 2000€ for a complete quad-PC (incl. licenses). Of
course, this doesn't pay out - as one station is usually less than 500€.

Therefore, I wondered if there are any schools using multiseat
- in classrooms,
- in computer labs
- in media corners?

Is installation straightforward? What extra costs are there for
additional gpu's? Is there TOC calculations? Is the assignment of
keyboards and mice to sessions stable (as I experience USB, device order
is hardly predictable)?

Installing main server + ltsp server profiles from
debian-edu-lenny-netinstall-alpha1.iso today, I came across this bug.
The installation stopped, and I had to press ctrl+c to continue. Same message
in log as mentioned before in this bug.

* Preseed tftpd-hpa to serve the kernels from /var/lib/tftpboot on
thin-client-servers.

* Preseed hddtemp/daemon to false, keeping the default of not
starting the daemon.
* Rewrite makefile rule to generate update-partman-recipes, using
printf instead of echo -n to avoid bashism.
* Fix code in xdebian-edu-firstboot to not fail when the test suite
isn't executed. Adjust it to not exit to early when reporting
errors.
* Report success when no errors are found when the test suite is
executed. Do not translate this, as all deveopers understand
English and end users should not see the message.
* Update Standards-Version from 3.8.2 to 3.8.3. No changes needed.
* Correct self test code to work with shell functions when debconf
is re-execing the script. Clean up its log file handling to avoid
useless copying.
* Look for /usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/run-at-firstboot and
execute it if present, to allow us to move more configuration
updates to the debian-edu-config package.
* Remove code from firstboot script which are now part of
debian-edu-config. Depend on debian-edu-config (>=
1.429~svn59498) to get a version with this code in place.
* Move finish-install script to sequence 13 to run before
15cdrom-detect to avoid the cdrom being umounted and ejected when
cfengine is executed.

Debian Edu lenny alpha1 prerelease

2009-12-03T03:49:14Z

This is the second test release (alpha1) of the Lenny based Skolelinux
version. Since the first test release (alpha0) some bugs got fixed and
some of the features broken in the last release are now working.

The updated images can be downloaded via FTP, HTTP and rsync (see below
for detailed instructions). The CD image size is about 606 MiB and the
DVD about 4.4 GiB.

Here are the most remarkable changes since the first test release (alpha0):

* The package killer is no longer automatically installed, because of
some remaining bugs.
* KPDF, Quanta and Kturtle are now installed automatically if KDE is
installed as desktop environment.
* The proxy server is now used by Iceweasel, even if the users remove
proxy configuration from his/her profile.
* The old DNS range names like printer, static, dhcp and ltsp are now
added to the LDAP tree on installation.
* Nagios3 configuration was revised and now has a better default behavior.
* Further examples for extended Samba configuration are distributed.
* The test suite, used to automatically detect errors in the installed
system, after installation, is now more robust.

The following features are still not working as they should:

* Nagios is not configured automatically through the data collected by
Sitesummary.
* Some flash based websites are not displayed correctly:
o Gnash is now the default flash player, the non free flash plugin can
be installed from lenny-backports (see http://www.backports.org/ for
more information).
* DVD does not work properly. On installation of the combined
mainserver+ltsp-server+workstation the text-mode installer hangs at the
end with a bluescreen - press CTRL-C to continue installation
* diskless workstations do still not work out of the box, they behave
like thin clients.

You just need:

1. A wii-controller (just the controller, not the wii)
2. A infrared led pen, you can get these from various resources (check

On Debian Lenny (current stable) there are a few wii packages.
Search for them like so:
apt-cache search wimote

One of them is wmgui, which I googled. Some of the findings:

Yes, I plan to work on these as soon as possible. Would be nice with
help fixing and testing these issues. :) Luckily it only affect
diskless workstations. Thin clients work just fine. :)

I just borrowed two of the laptops in the gathering test box, and hope
to be able to test this myself now.

Only for diskless workstations. For thin clients, ldm is still used.

Nice analysis of the problem. Will you follow up on this (soon) or should we
file bugs to not forget to deal with the issues. I'm afraid some might get

Can you check if using ldap-method static instead of dynamic, the
problem persists?
As you know, I'm using this in many schools since last year and have
never had this problem. I'm using the same configuration debian edu has,
except that I use static to connect to ldap. On the other hand, I don't
know why dynamic is being used in Debian edu, as it creates much more
traffic with the ldap server, and adding new machines to ldap is not
something I do everyday to need a dynamic connection to the ldap
server....

Found the problem with the strange login. KDE was not installed in
the LTSP chroot. A quick

chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 "aptitude install $(tasksel --task-packages education-desktop-kde)"

later, the KDE environment is installed. Clearly the package
installation part of ltsp-make-client need to be checked.

After this, the login into KDE worked.

During login, messages like this show up in syslog:

I suspect the solution is to add /var/lib/nfs as a writable directory
in etc/default/ltsp-client-setup, but do not have time to verify that
now. Ie adding something like this:

copy_dirs="$copy_dirs /var/lib/nfs"

I had a look at the server together with Ole-Anders, and the first
problem I discovered is that /etc/resolv.conf on the client was wrong,
pointing to 10.0.2.1 instead of 10.0.2.2. It is not updated by
resolvconf, as dhclient isn't running on the thin clients, and I
suspect this was the DNS server used during installation.

Next, /var/run/utmp is missing. /etc/rcS.d/K*bootmisc.sh need to be
changed to /etc/rcS.d/S*bootmisc.sh (and update-rc.d need to be run to
reorder the boot), to make sure it is created at boot.

Third, kdm was not installed in the LTSP chroot, and thus the diskless
workstations executed ldm and not kdm. I have no idea why, but I
installed it. Renamed rc3.d/S??ltsp-client-core to
K??ltsp-client-core to disable kdm and reordered the boot to make sure
only kdm start in runlevel 3.

And forth, NFS locking did not work because portmap failed to function
properly. The reason was that the loopback interface was missing.
Adding 'auto lo' to etc/network/interfaces solved this.

Third, dbus was not started, making consolekit fail to work and
logging in failing to work properly. Renaming rc3.d/K02dbus S02dbus
and reordering the boot solve that problem. Logging in is still
strange.

All these issues need to be fixed in ltsp-make-client to get diskless
workstations working properly out of the box.
