NOTICE: Debian is moving sieve to its IANA allocated port (4190)

This is a general warning to those using Debian Squeeze, and Debian Sid.

Debian Etch and Debian Lenny users are NOT affected.

The IANA port allocated for ManageSieve is 4190/tcp, and the old port used
by timsieved and other managesieve software in many distros (2000/tcp) is
allocated for Cisco SCCP usage, according to the IANA registry[1].

Starting with the version 4.38 of the Debian "netbase" package, the "sieve"
service will be moved from port 2000 to port 4190 in the /etc/services file.

Any installs which used the "sieve" service name instead of a numeric port
number will switch to the new port number as soon as the services are
restarted/reloaded, and in some cases, immediately after /etc/services is
updated.

This will affect Cyrus IMAP. This may also affect other sieve-enabled
software such as DoveCot.

In order to avoid downtime problems, mail cluster administrators using
Debian are urged to verify their Cyrus (and probably also DoveCot) installs,
and take measures to avoid services moving from port 2000/tcp to port
4190/tcp by surprise in either servers or clients.

It is worth noting that:

1. /etc/services will only be automatically updated if you never made any
modifications to it. Otherwise, you will be presented with a prompt by ucf
or dpkg asking you about the changes.

2. You can edit /etc/services and change the sieve port back to 2000 if you
want (this is not recommended, though).

3. You can edit /etc/cyrus.conf and any other relevant config files for your
mail/webmail cluster (e.g. on the sieve web frontends) ahead of time to
force them all to a static port number.

4. You can configure cyrus master to listen on *both* ports (2000 and 4190)
at the same time, and thus avoid the problem entirely. This also allows for
a much more smooth migration from port 2000 to port 4190.

Yes. Get a proxy that does support RTSP, fotget proxying RTSP, or pay for
implementing RTSP support to squid (or other proxy).

And, get mail client that doesn't break quoting when replying mail.

Sieve is very awesome, especially if you have more than one location you
use IMAP at (for me it's home, office, phone, rolling cart computer, and
webmail). I stopped using client side filters a long time ago and never
looked back.

Horde, RoundCube and SquirrelMail have visual editors for sieve. T-bird,
unfortunately, does not and the plugin is just a managesieve interface
that lets you write and manage scripts. The others hide the managesieve,
but it's all the same deal server side. At least under Dovecot if you
created a rule to a nonexistent folder it'll just create it and
optionally auto-subscribe to it.

Okay, since you answered *that* question so quickly, he's a bonus question: Is there something like that for SSH public keys? I want to be able to use my username and password to log into a remote server *once* and have my public key transferred to the "authorized_hosts" file of the remote server so that I don't need to use my password again.

There's a tool called "ssh-copy-id" which can do it, but only from command-line *nix boxes.

SecureCRT has a "Public Key Assistant" which claims to do it and looks to be very user-friendly, but it requires either their proprietary SSH server or their forked OpenSSH.

Any standard protocol for managing the authorized_keys file on the remote machine?

Yes, look at sieve.
Cyrus Imap support sieve, dovecot too.

Are asking for sieve (or managesieve) protocol implemented in dovecot
and courier? If I know it is only a draft but is working very well in
this implementations.
I'm using a sievie client in my webmail and thunderbird for server side
filtering - works like a charm.

What's the state of client management of server-side mail filters?

For my personal email account, I use procmail on the server side to do
my mail filtering (ie, send obvious spam right into Trash, put suspected
spam into a "ProbableSpam" box, etc). So, whenever I want to change my
mail filtering, I have to ssh into the server to do it, which is enough
of an inconvenience such that I tend to put it off for days or weeks.

Any respectable mail *client* these days supports mail filtering,
providing a simple interface, but they do it at the time that they
*download* the message (or, at least, the headers). Another problem with
it is that, if you have multiple places from whence you check your mail,
then you'll have to maintain multiple sets of filter rules and keep them
all in sync.

The solution that is staring the problem in the face is to have a
standardized way for *clients* to edit the filter settings on the
*server*. This isn't unlike the advantage of IMAP over POP. Where POP
would cause problems when people would try to download and/or delete
mail with multiple client PC's, IMAP kept the server ultimately in
charge of the mail, and the clients (no matter how many you used from
different places) had to make the changes through the server.

It seems to me that having the same model for mail *filter* control (ie,
where the server is ultimately in charge and the clients merely provide
a friendly UI for dealing with it) would really put an end to countless
filter-config headaches. And there has been *such* a need for something
like this, that I would think that *somebody* out there with some real
clout (like Google or Microsoft or Mozilla) would have proposed a viable
solution and that the developers of qmail, courier, procmail, exim,
Thunderbird, etc... would all be working on getting this capability into
their products by now.

So, I guess the question is: Does anybody know of an initiative like this?

Squid is a HTTP proxy, so it's only useful to pass HTTP traffic through it.
Also, there may be some problems it you force some traffic to go through
proxy via intercepting the traffic.

Yes, you can have some benefits if you configure proxy with good
performance...

ngrep and vlan

I've written an application that watches web traffic for PII and other
sensitive info leaking from clients networks. I use ngrep to pull the data.
It's being used a lot of places. However, a new site put it on a tap, and
that tap is sniffing on VLAN traffic, which the current ngrep doesn't support
for some reason. I can find an old version that has vlan patches available,
but I was wondering is anyone has gone through the effort to add that to the
much newer ngrep? The code has changed so much that it's not a trivial task
to add it in, and I don't think I want to run an older version of the code.
I'd just rather use a .deb that is maintained.

Has anyone done this, or considering it?

Well, I guess you won't find such provider as UMTS always depends on the
network coverage and if UMTS/3G is also supported. Otherwise you will
probably fall back to GPRS. There may be some big players which are
present in few countries, but AFAIK not worldwide.

The costs are another topic. Maybe some ISPs will provide a cheap rate
for mobile internet connectivity but usually you have to pay expensive
roaming charges on foreign GSM/3G networks.

Worldwide connectivity is only possible with some very expensive
satellite uplink providers. Some cruise and container ships use such
uplinks for example.

Hi Rodolfo,

This works well if its setup correctly. First key is to have fast
drives, especially if you have a lot of clients accessing it. We run 15K
SAS drives, 10K SAS and UWSCSI would do fine also but stay away from
Sata and IDE. Second key is run COSS filesystem for smaller files and
aufs ( if on Linux ) for the larger files, running on ReiserFS. Lastly
if you have a Cisco router use wccp, it runs well, is transparent and
handles failures.

Xen nat + route

possible to have such configuration that I would have nat + route
simultaneously ?

Different thing, it's depends in which country you live. Best option
you can get is H3G (three.com). They have a real flatrate and don't
charge any roaming fees in countries they have a branch office. They
also provide a "public" IP. Firewalling can be turned on and off via
some web interface. Openvpn via UDP works fine, even with firewall
turned on. Haven't tried Ipsec.
