Very possibly unrelated as I had different symptoms, but the common
things were:
* Acer laptop (extensa 5420)
* Appeared in combination with suspend/hibernation
* Started occuring somwhere between 2.6.26 (lenny) and 2.6.30 (squeeze)

I now (since a few days) use pci=nomsi as kernel parameter in grub, and
the symptoms seem to have gone away.

Hi,

I run squeeze on an acer travelmate 4002. everything is fine, but
shutdown, hibernate, and suspend don't work.

Shutdown says "will now halt" and spins down the disk, but then "task
halt was blocked for more than 120 seconds".

For suspend/hibernate pm-suspend.log ends with "performing
suspend"/"performing hibernate" but the screen never powers down. the
only way out is a hard shutdown.

This is probably a kernel issue as Ubuntu on the same machine started
behaving the same way after upgrading the kernel from 2.6.28 to 2.6.31.

Any ideas what's worth a try before filing a bug report?

I actually have a 3Com card which may be from the same lineup (3CXM556
- a 16 bit 56K hardware modem), although I doubt that I'll be able to help
you.

A couple of suggestions:

I) post the dmesg / syslog output from the card insertion
II) ifconfig -a

Setting up a network connection with the card 3CXE589EC (3com)

Hello everybody out there using debian,
I'm trying to make the network card 3CXE589EC (manufacturer: 3com) work on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro 460CDT) with debian 5.0 (Lenny, Kernel: 2.6.26-2-486).
During the installation process the card was recognized, I could configure the network setup successfully and even access the network mirrors for additional package sources.
However, after having restarted the laptop at the end of the installation process, I couldn't set up an internet connection anymore.

This is of course for an older version of debian, but it contained some useful information:
I installed the package pcmcia-cs and added the modules pcmcia and 3c59x to my /etc/modules file.

That's where the noise comes from.

All I can tell you is previously acpi_osi="Linux" would allow
"normal" fan behaviour. Whatever the fan is.

I'd read/tried similar advice.

toshset requires the 'toshiba' module to be loaded, but that won't
load on my laptop.

# toshset -q
required kernel toshiba support not enabled.

# modprobe toshiba
FATAL: Error inserting toshiba
(/lib/modules/2.6.30-2-686/kernel/drivers/char/toshiba.ko): No such
device

# dmesg | tail -1
[12930.555045] toshiba: not a supported Toshiba laptop

CPU fan permenantly on. Toshiba L300. (squeeze/sid (2.6.30-2-686))

I have a Toshiba laptop: Satellite L300, model PSLB8A-0FM004.

I was running Ubuntu (2.6.28-15-generic) with kernel option
acpi_osi="Linux". This option would allow the fan to spin down when
not busy, without the option the fan would spin up and never spin
down.
i.e. acpi_osi="Linux" would allow "normal" fan behaviour.

I migrated to Debian (squeeze/sid (2.6.30-2-686)). The fan never
spins down. I thought I would add acpi_osi="Linux" to see if that
would spin the fan down as it did with the previous (older) Ubuntu
Linux kernel. The fan did not spin down.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
the problem was solved by installing the latest nvidia-kernel-source and
nvidia-glx packages (190.42) which entered unstable today. No other change was
needed.

I also upgraded to the 2.6.31 kernel, but I don't think that this had
something to do with the problem.

Where do you set the lower resolution options?

Set it in the in the section "Monitor" under => "Preferred Mode" as the
only variabel and also in the next Section "Modes" under => "Modeline"
at the first place and see if it works. Simply try to change "1900 1200"
to "1900 1120". It should be placed in the first part of this line. If
not you maybe have to change the Hsync or Vsync value but first try it
if youn don't have already.

Screen and projector resolution

Hello,
I have a laptop computer equipped with a NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX graphics
card. The screen works with the default 1900x1200 resolution. I tried to lower
down this resolution e.g. to 1900x1120, so that the latter coincides with the
resolution of the projector which I use for presentations. Otherwise, part of
the computer screen does not appear on the overhead projection. However, the
only option available in the NVIDIA Settings Tool for the computer screen is
1900x1200. My xorg.conf file contains the following

Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

I added more, lower resolutions in the xorg.conf file, at no success.
No other resolution options are available in the Kickoff --> Setttings -->
Screen menu of KDE, as well.
I use unstable/amd64, 2.6.30-2 kernel, kde 4.3.2.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks Gireesh,

The color problem is sporadic, and didn't recur again until I resumed
from hibernate this morning. Unfortunately, xset dpms force suspend
didn't help. When I run this command, the screen blanks for a second or
two, then reappears exactly as it was before. Note that I don't have to
touch the mouse or keyboard, the 'suspend' only lasts a few seconds.

Any other ideas?

Try doing

xset dpms force suspend

and then move the mouse or hit a key to see if the display comes back
properly. My laptop gives a blank white screen on resume from hibernate and
the above helps. Since you're using fluxbox, it may be easier to set up a
shortcut for this command before you do the hibernate. That will ease your job
instead of having to type the command correctly in a messed up display.

color wonky on external monitor

Hi,

I'm having trouble with the colors on an external monitor. If I boot up
and run X, there's no problem. However, on resuming from hibernate, the
colors are all wrong - the screen looks like a rainbow. I can still make
out the windows and even read some of the text, which allows me to exit
fluxbox and restart X. After that everything is fine.

I had some more serious problems with hibernating and the external
monitor, which I fixed by adding:

OnResume 20 xrandr --auto

to /etc/hibernate/common.conf. Any suggestions on how to correct the
color without restarting X?

Interesting. AFAIK, pm-utils uses uswsusp if it's installed, which
I guess is the reason than my /etc/uswsusp.conf setting is
still sufficient.
