Dial Modem use with T20 Thinkpad

A friend has a functional T20 running Win 2K, and would like to install
Linux. However, for one remote vacation spot, he must use dial modem
for internet access.

My recollection is the internal modem is a "winmodem" and will be
"no worky" with Ubuntu. Is that correct?

If so, what plug-in modem (USB or serial) is recommended for Linux?

Thanks in advance

You should be able to find a PCCard modem for about a nickel on eBay.
Those generally work really well with Linux, as they present another
serial port. You may have to disable the unused (real) serial port, FWIW.

Otherwise any true serial modem will work just fine.

These winmodems used to work with the i386 kernels until Ubuntu 7.04 or so.
But the ltmodem driver does not work with recent kernels it seems and the
martian driver is still buggy in my experience.

So in short, yes and no. If you do not want to lose time, buy a pcmcia card,
as suggested by an other poster.

The built-in dial-up adaptor in my T20 worked fine under linux distros
available back then.  T20 and dial-up accounts have all died since then.
Do you have a dial-up service which doesn't block access to linux?

I used one of the older US Robotics External (not the winmodem) modems on my T20 and T40 without any problems. They are still available on eBay.

Well, on my A20m with Debian I used a Dick Smith 56k PCMCIA card.    Dick
Smith are usually just some other manufacture relabelled (for example the
Dick Smith wifi card i'm using right now is just a TP-link 510G relabelled).
Before that I was using a 33k Xircom, IIRC.    I'd say almost any PCMCIA
modem should work OK.

AFAIK the T20 can have a 3com Ethernet/modem combo, where the modem
part doesn't work in Linux, or a Lucent based winmodem, which can be
used in Linux.

Tino
