Difference between "chat" and "IM"

Hi,
I am currently working at the zh_CN translation for pidgin, and I
noticed that "chat" and "IM" are used differently. It seems that "IM"
usually refers to those with only two people involved, while "chat"
usually means a chat in the chatroom. Am I right?

I think you're right, the current translation in zh_CN of "chat" is "聊天", and I don't think it's suitable. For me, "群聊" or "多人对话" is better.

You are correct, that is the distinction that we make in Pidgin/libpurple.
