Difficult question on sharing the loveI recently received a sponsorship donation to Tux Paint, in return for continuing to have a link to a website about educationl software on the tuxpaint.org site. (I believe it was mentioned when it was first put up.) This time around, I decided I wanted to share this with some of the other developers, especially considering the gracious sponsorship from Cernio -- I no longer have to pay $120/month to maintain the webserver that tuxpaint.org resides on. I'm not sure the best way of deciding who or how much. Should I just decided privately, and quietly reward people as I see fit? Should we have some kind of discussion and/or vote here on the mailing list? I do feel like it's more than just lines of code, translations made, or artwork generated. I also feel like being timely is better than looking back at the entire 7 year history. (If I did that every time I decided to do this, many of the same people would likely get picked.) Alternatively, I can simply transfer the money to SPI, to hold for Tux4Kids for when/if we need it, rather than do this stressful 'reward' stuff. :) One of the problems with rewarding one person is that other people might feel rejected (rather than inspired to try and help more). (I'm guessing that would also be especially true if we made the decisions openly, because then it might become a kind of 'fight' for the money. :) ) Sigh. What do people think? I've been putting off thinking about this for days, and obviously I need some input from all of you. Thanks! -- -bill! This is the best idea, IMHO. Caroline (via Facebook) also agreed with simply transferring the money to SPI. Another idea (from Michale Simms, who runs Linux Game Publishing) was to simply buy gifts (e.g., books from Amazon) for the deserving people, rather than giving out cash (aka paypal :) ) -bill! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Let Crystal Reports handle the reporting - Free Crystal Reports 2008 30-Day trial. Thanks for the input, everyone who has provided it. :) Next time I get a nice sponsorship donation, I'll probably try to sneak some gifts out to some of you, since I really feel like I owe a lot of you for all your help. But for now, I'll talk to the folks at SPI about putting what I have right now ($300USD) into the 'Tux4Kids account'. -bill! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Let Crystal Reports handle the reporting - Free Crystal Reports 2008 30-Day trial. SVG Open, and who wants business cards? (Was re: Difficult question on sharing the love)On Tue, Aug 18, 2009 at 11:34:30AM -0700, Bill Kendrick wrote:

I apparently need to pay to attend SVG Open (where I'll be presenting a talk on SDL & SVG, with a little Tux Paint). So perhaps rather than (1) pass the money to SPI to hold onto, or (2) use the money myself for coffee and other stuff that keeps me going, I'll (3) keep the money around for things like attending conferences (normally don't cost anything, since I don't travel), making flyers, printing business cards, etc. Speaking of which, if anyone here would like some Tux Paint business cards, I can have some printed up by OvernightPrints.com and shipped to you. Talk to me off-list and we'll figure out how many to make, and how much it'll cost to ship them. FYI, I hand business cards out to parents I meet at parks and other places, put them out at coffee shops, ice cream parlors and other venues, and -- of course -- have them out at open source conferences, LUG meetings, and other kinds of events. Also note: the cards I print don't have my name on them, and I doubt I'd want to make personalized ones for anyone. When people have asked me why my name isn't on the cards, I tell them: "You're not supposed to care who I am -- just go download the program!" -- -bill!
