Digikey New Zealand I see Digikey have a NZ office but no Australian one. Does any Nz'er
or Aus person know if they will export to Australia (from the NZ office)? Just trying to work out if it is cheaper to order a small amount from Microchip or from elsewhere. Farnell of course stock all the 24F parts except the one I'm looking for. Freight costs of course are normally the killer. Not sure they actually have an office here in NZ, I've only used them once or twice (web order, credit card) and freight came direct from the United States in America. Freight cost was around NZD39. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a way to order into Australia direct from Digikey. -- Brent Brown, Electronic Design Solutions 16 English Street, St Andrews, Hamilton 3200, New Zealand Ph: +64 7 849 0069 Fax: +64 7 849 0071 Cell: +64 27 433 4069 eMail: brent.brown@... -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |

Re: Digikey New Zealand> I see Digikey have a NZ office but no Australian one. Does any Nz'er
> or Aus person know if they will export to Australia (from the NZ > office)? I was/am of the impression that the "NZ" office is a virtual one and that orders are fulfilled directly from Thief River.(Great name for a place to run a business one.) This is also true of their Chinese website, which starts off with Chinse URLs but AFAIR reverts to US obes as one proceeds through the system. Digikey offer free freight to NZ for orders over $100. AFAIR that's $NZ100 and not $US100 - although the two are reasonably similar at present - in the not too distant past they were almost 2:1. Combining orders with other antipodeans may be doable. An alternative is to acquire a US contact who will forward for you using a lower cost service than Digikey offer. I'm not sure if Digikey offer Global Priority Express - AFAIR it costs $US9 to send an A4 x 100 page or so stout enevlope by that service with delivery times of about 1 week - faster than DHL manages sometimes with their brain dead arrangement with local couriers here or when sending my cameras to Singapore. (DHL appear to me to be looking for creative ways to destroy their business, although the reason theymight wish to do so is not apparent). If you determine that Digikey have a real NZ office please advise - it would be useful. Re: Digikey New ZealandI have bought parts from Digikey in the US (into Australia) ... and in my
case the parts cost approx $2.50 each (for 5 x DIL 8 pin ic's) ... but the freight cost $80 !!! They were not negotiable on freight or freight options ... if I wanted the bits, I had to pay the freight. At the time my only other alternative was to buy a replacement pcb for the device I was repairing ... and that was around $500. There might be something in their location name after all. Common sense would expect freight to be cheaper to Australia than halfway around the world to my door. But shipping prices often don't obey common sense. Re: Digikey New ZealandHi all,

A couple of years ago I did a little research on Thief River Falls, Minnesota. The place is quite dependent on two large employers: Digikey and Arctic Cat. About 1/3rd of the people work for Digikey, 1/3rd for Arctic Cat, and the other 1/3rd work for small service-oriented businesses which serve the other 2/3rds :) See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief_River_Falls,_Minnesota (tells you that the population is 8400 people) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digi-Key (1900 employees) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Cat (1630 employees) Typically, the workforce is about 75% of the population. That's 6300 people in TRF's case. 30% of those work for DK. 26% for Arctic Cat. 44% for other businesses. Re: Digikey New ZealandMuch to my amazement, I've just discovered that RS have the Pic in
stock (well in England actually) and they are actually CHEAPER than buying it direct from Microchip after freight is included. Taking an aspirin and having a lie down now, the shock is too much. :) Colin -- cdb, colin@... on 11/9/2009 Web presence: www.btech-online.co.uk Hosted by: www.1and1.co.uk/?k_id=7988359 -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |
