Now in xine-ui it's very inconvenient to open DVD-Video from folder. For doing
it I have to either change dvd.device value or first make a symlink /dev/dvd to
my DVD-folder and then open it in xine.
In gxine I can use "Open MRL" option and enter path as "dvd://<path>". In
xine-ui this option opens the dialog without textbox - I can only choose a
media in filesystem tree (tried many skins).
It would be convenient to open DVD pressing "DVD" button and choosing the path.

Its resolution was in frames (+/- ~1 second), now it is calculated from the

As I've already mentioned, it crashes with both xine-lib 1.1.16.3 and 1.1.17,
on both F10 and F12. The ffmpeg packages are
ffmpeg-libs-0.4.9-0.56.20080908.fc10.i386 and
ffmpeg-libs-0.5-5.20091026svn.fc12.i686 respectively.

On F12, that's libavcodec.so.52.37.1. I don't have the F10 numbers to hand.

Can you please explain how this is an ffmpeg bug, given that Fedoras 10 and 12
are using such different versions of ffmpeg?

Bad assumption – it crashes on amd64 – but I'm closing this anyway because it
looks like an ffmpeg bug. If you can show that it's a xine-lib bug, feel free
to re-open it.

I have just successfully watched crash.mov on a 64 bit Fedora 12 installation,
and so I am assuming that this bug is only a 32 bit issue.

Well, there's your problem right there. Very clearly described.

When you downloaded it, where was the file saved? I'm guessing that this
isn't the same directory as that shell's current directory...

You're supposed to take notice of this kind of thing. Really. Did you just
try that command, see it fail, then immediately post here? I hope not, but
that's the impression that I'm getting – that you're not really doing any
thinking for yourself – and that's Not Good.

on my old Fedora 10 machine (where it DEFINITELY used to work), and it fails

Darren, it has always worked for me, no crash now or before.

It worked with old xine-lib and old ffmpeg, it worked with latest xine-lib and
old ffmpeg, it still works now that both are up to date.

Danni, if you're compiling from source, can you retest this scenario when a
post-0.50 release of FFMPEG is available? You'll want to make sure to use the
--with-external-ffmpeg configure option.

Interesting... it continued to fail if you upgraded only xine-lib, and worked
fine if you only upgraded ffmpeg...? (That would be consistent with the problem
appearing deep within libavcodec, which means that it's likely Not Our
Problem.)

Incidentally, your 1.1 tree appears to have two changesets which mine doesn't;
and Xv is fine here.

Upgraded ffmpeg to version SVN-r20854 and xine lib to version
9872:0546197b637e.

Still no crashing.

I don't know if it is relevant, but xine now uses opengl as video driver (xv
doesn't work???) and xine-ui includes a patch I coded to fix

I think that I'd try upgrading (or bisecting) xine-lib first. I think that the
change which is most likely to be causing breakage (if it *is* xine-lib which
is broken here) is 7db2d12286d0, that being the only one which directly touches
ffmpeg video decoding.

Again, this is older than mine. But since I compiled xine-lib myself, I would
have expected a compilation failure if ffmpeg were incompatible. Or a configure
failure, at the very least.

Hard to say, because 1.1.16.3 existed for so long... ;-). I do believe that
1.1.16.3 used to work correctly. FWIW, I first created that .mov fragment on
16th November 2009, but it had been failing for a fair while before then too.

First 100k of a MOV file that crashes xine-lib

xine has begun to crash immediately when playing certain Quicktime movie files:

$ xine crash.mov
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.6cvs.
(c) 2000-2007 The xine Team.
xiTK received SIGSEGV signal, RIP.
Aborted (core dumped)

This is with home-compiled xine-lib 1.1.17, and is against Fedora's
ffmpeg-libs-0.5-5.20091026svn.fc12.i686 package.

So I was able to successfully run the command (no errors):

mkdir -p ~/.xine

but when I ran:

scan /path_to/initial_tuning_file >~/.xine/channels.conf

I got:

Can't get Xine to work on Fedora 11 x64

Howdy,

I can't get xine running on Fedora 11 x64. When I launch xine I get a
prompt:

The stream 'There is no MRL.' uses an unsupported codec:
Video Codec: MPEG 1/2 (0x0)
Start playback anyway ?

Yes / No

Clicking Yes or No just reopens the error prompt. Upgrading to
xine-lib-1.1.17
didn't help. Gxine works (except that de-interlacing doesn't)

Shell alias? No; that wouldn't break parameters.

Wrapper script? Seems likely, and it *is* the cause if it has $@ instead of
"$@". That's about the only way in which this could happen, and that can not be
gxine's fault since there *is* no wrapper (which is supplied).

So any bug here is your fault or the packager's fault...

And, looking at the source (from packman), what do I see but the addition of a
wrapper:
