Dist Upgrade

I've been waiting but I still see no upgrade.  Synaptic doesn't show
anything and neither does update-manager -d. I've got my preferences set
to show normal upgrades.

"-d" = upgrade to development version

Just read it.  Already did everything except download the ISO image and
try that way.  But I'm trying to find out why update manager and
synaptic won't do it.

By the way. It worked fine on another machine here at home.

YES, NO -
Quotes from above:
"and neither does update-manager -d"
"update manager ... won't do it."

My point was that when you add "-d" you are trying to upgrade to a
development version.

I have upgraded with "(sudo) do-release-upgrade -m desktop" but if you
prefer the GUI, why don't look at:
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/karmic/en/man8/update-manager.8.html

today:

You have these errors because you have run update-manager as root.

Try:
sudo update-manager -p

I do know you can't use dist-upgrade on Ubuntu.  It will break a ton of
stuff.  If your having problems upgrading try these commands in order:

apt-get update
do-release-upgrade

I haven't heard of this before. Anyone want to corroborate? Maybe I was
lucky but I used it recently to upgrade some packages that were held
back.

It's certainly available:
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/jaunty/man8/apt-get.8.html
but the "Official" server docs have this to say:
https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/installing-upgrading.html
<quote>
Debian based systems can also be upgraded by using apt-get dist-upgrade.
However, using do-release-upgrade is recommended because it has the
ability to handle system configuration changes sometimes needed between
releases.

Umm... why is your repository target set for us.debian.org?

Just as an fyi:

There is no man page (that I can find) for 'do-release-upgrade'. However:

$ cat /usr/bin/do-release-upgrade

shows the options.

I don't know.  I used synaptic to re-install update-manager in case
there was a problem and it wiped out all my third party repositories
like medibuntu, so I just used it bare hoping to get an upgrade.
Synaptic showed no new upgrades or even updates, but update-manager
showed a bunch of upgrades.  Now it is telling me things like it is
unable to upgrade from lenny to jaunty.  etc/apt/sources.list and
./sources.list.saves all have "karmic" listed as the distro.

Doesn't matter if it says karmic etc., at this point. You need to change
from us.debian.org. Use System|Administration|Software Sources|Ubuntu
Software and change the 'Download from:' to 'Main server', then 'Close',
then 'Reload'. You can of course modify sources.list, but for now I'd
just recommend you use the above.

Now, from a terminal (get out of root mode and go back to a standard
user mode):

$ sudo apt-get update && apt-get update

and let us know the result.

Seems to be worse than that. I have
System|Administration|Software Sources|Debian Software

Can somebody give me a list of ubuntu repos to put in sources.list?

Do you not mean:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
instead.  IME, the second command will not run without root privileges and I don't think you want to run update twice.  HTH,
