DotNet and Private FTP Server

This is my first post to the group and a new TM user.

I wanted to ask the forum on any experiences either pro or con not using TM FTP server versus setting up a private FTP server to maintain the troop database?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,

I don't think that is an option.  It has been several years since I
looked into Dot Net (for security reasons) & I think that it can only
be stored on their server.  That may have changed.  Calling TM will
give a definitive answer.

My unit just migrated to TM dot.net.  We use their server at this time, but
you can change it to use your own if you wish.  We chose to use their server
strictly for ease of use.

We may try to move this to a different server at some point, but the cost of
their service is small.

DotNet has been seamless to use.  Out Troop has already used an ftp services
for our web page and file storage, though the choice to use the TM server
for the TM has been no problem, easy for initial connection then never seen
again.

Our troop used our web hosting company for the FTP.  Still you have to
pay for the DOTNET key.  Our provider decided to turn the switch off
without notice and never return email or phone calls.  We now use TM FTP
site and have never had a problem.  Same cost.

I have used TM and PM for about 3 years, both with the DotNet option.
FYI, the cost of DotNet includes TMI hosting your databases on-line.
The only thing I could think of that would be a negative is TMI
doesn't make any guarantees about backing up your data (that is what
the backup button is for in TM on your PC).

If you use your own FTP service, you would get whatever you pay your
provider to do, but you don't get a price break from TMI for not using
their FTP service.

From my point of view, I would go with the TMI FTP service and make
sure you back up your data locally...

Out troop uses the TM server. About a year or so ago they had an outage/problem with their server and we switched over to the server that handles our FTP/Website. The crew uses TM on the server that handles their website/FTP. There have been no issues with the Crew's Server since start-up. If you a tech savvy leader/parent, the switch to a private server is seamless.
