>
> I think you can modify the lpr command executed from the print
> settings dialog in some Ubuntu programs, but I'm not sure if that is
> due to Ubuntu printing or the specific application (I'm on Fedora,
> which doesn't do it at all).
>
> I struggled with this some a few years ago, but ended up deciding to
> just use my NetID as my local username the next time I reinstalled the
> OS (which happened to be not long after). This also had the added
> benefit of making it even easier when logging in to the Linux computer
> labs (username was automatically passed through).
>
> Although requiring a specific local username is a tad annoying, I
> haven't had any problems or complaints since I did it.
>
> Another (completely untested) idea would be to move /usr/bin/lpr to
> /usr/bin/lpr.real and create a shell script in its place to just call
> /usr/bin/lpr.real -U (username) (all other passed arguments). It might
> be worth a shot of you want to avoid reinstalling/migrating your user
> account.
>
> Hope some of that is helpful!

I ran into the same problem as you way back in 2005. At that point, the
answer was to configure your programs to use an lpr command for printing.
since I'm no longer there. It's also possible that CUPS accepts a
username configuration option now -- I haven't needed to check in a long
time. Good luck.

Howdy. Every year, CS hosts a site for the ACM Mid-Atlantic
Programming Contest. http://midatl.radford.edu/ We'll be hosting
about 26 teams. Each team will use a Linux workstation, and accounts
are wiped clean and recreated before and after a practice session.

We're running Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) Linux on our contest computers.
Teams can use either KDE or Gnome. So actually we're running
Kubuntu, which starts kdm instead of gdm. Apparently there is a bug
in the user switcher such that under Gnome, it does not work with kdm.
When a team account starts a Gnome session for the first time, they
get an error window that warns that "User Switcher has quit
unexpectedly ...". They need to click on "Don't reload" to make it
go away.

We do not need the user switcher for the contest, and we'd rather not
have the teams be confused / bothered by the error window. I've tried
all sorts of things with the gnome / gconf / etc setup to try to have
the user switcher not be loaded / attempted, but to no avail.

Question: Does anyone know how to tweak the Gnome or gconf setup such
that when an account is created and the user starts Gnome (or KDE) for
the first time, the User Switcher feature will not be included in the
setup at all, and thus not generate the error window?

Thanks.

Just a quick note that both VPNs are Cisco products.

The older one that is referenced on the OIT page is a legacy system that
is planning to be phased out. The newer one, accessible by vpn.duke.edu
is a candidate that is being worked on as a replacement.
I tried the Web VPN and it wouldn't install, neither would a manual
install of the thin-client. Support reported the same issue.
Couple of other suggestions coming in I haven't tried yet.
It was working fine on 9.04 for me.

Thank you, Dr. Brown, as well as Tom and Jeff. It seems that the consensus is the combination of ssh keys and having the repo in AFS space.

I took Tom's advice and tried to enable KerberosGetAFSToken in the sshd_config of the remote machine and see if that worked, but it errored when I restarted sshd saying that it was an unknown option. After doing some searching using Google, apparently that binary had not been configured with AFS support.

I decided that instead of making it work with AFS that I'd just set up a repo on a disk local to the server as Dr. Brown suggested. Did some testing last night, no problem. Did testing this morning and it worked as well. So I've got something working for the time being, though it's owned by me and running as me. I'm not sure that's how I want to leave it, but as I'm the only one who will probably ever use it, I'll take it.

Thanks again everyone for the thoughts and suggestions!

Brian

On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 2:51 PM, Robert G. You should be able to configure your ssh client to use and delegate your
GSSAPI creds - what I can't recall offhand (or test, since I no longer
use AFS) is if you can also get a token as well. There is an
'KerberosGetAFSToken' option in recent sshd_config, which defaults to no
- you might try setting that...

Or you could use a server with a non AFS filesystem that doesn't time
you out after a certain amount of time. I'm guessing that you have
root access to other servers (or even workstations) with hard-mounted
disk space and ssh -- one of the nice things about ssh+svn is that it
doesn't take much to set up a remote repo.

Oh, and one final possibility is google's free svn devel repo. You can
set up a svn repo there for you and your project for nothing and control
it in a pretty fine grained way. The only trouble is that I think it
has to be a GPL project or the like -- something that other people can
(in principle) see or get a copy of.
Jeff,

Thanks for the response. I thought it might have had something to do with AFS tokens, as I do use a key to log in (due to the very reason you stated....I had done it after using the svn repo on community.oit and constantly being asked for my password).

I have an alias set up on my machine, 'nksh' that actually runs 'ssh -o PubkeyAuthentication=no -o GSSAPIAuthentication=no'. I assumed that this would take care of the AFS token, as if I run ssh without it, I have no access to anything in my home dir).

I did take Jeff's advice and ran my nksh alias into pils, then ran klog. I then tried to do a checkout via svn+ssh and got the same thing :-/

That being said, for giggles I just tried it again after doing that (some time after...), and it appears to be working!

So, assuming that this did work, a few questions:

1) is there a reason it wouldn't have happened immediately?
2) does "ssh -o PubkeyAuthentication=no -o GSSAPIAuthentication=no" eliminate the need for klog? I'd ssh'd in several times before that and it didn't work. It appears that only after running klog did it work.

(ok, so that's 2,versus "a few"....)

Thanks very much for your help!

Brian

On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 9:34 AM, Jeff Abbott <jeff.abbott@...> wrote:
Fast forward to last night. I needed one of the documents stored there
and was eager to use my svn repo to check it out and edit it. However,
when I ran the command:

svn co svn+ssh://pils.netcom.duke.edu/afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo

I get

svn: Can't open file '/afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo/format':
Permission denied

The first thing that springs to my mind is AFS tokens. Are you using a private key to connect to pils.netcom.duke.edu? If so, then you might need to connect using your password once, do a klog, and then do the checkout again. You'd need to klog once every 10 hours, or not use a key to connect (which is a hassle, since Subversion makes 3 or 4 connections each time you try to do something). Another possibility would be granting system:anyuser read rights to ~mbjohn/svn/, but that's probably also not what you want.

Hope that helps,
Jeff

> central place to store some documents and other projects. I found a good
> followed the directions (it's incredibly easy). After getting everything set
> up, I was able to use svn+ssh to checkout the document I wanted to checkout.
> I was actually able to do it successfully as I continued to test.
>
> Fast forward to last night. I needed one of the documents stored there and
> was eager to use my svn repo to check it out and edit it. However, when I
> ran the command:
>
> svn co svn+ssh://pils.netcom.duke.edu/afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo
>
> I get
>
> svn: Can't open file '/afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo/format': Permission
> denied
>
> The server I'm trying this on is set up to use our AFS space as our home
> directories and the repo is set up in there (as ~mbjohn/svn/repo). As
> mentioned, I created the repo and it was working fine 2 weeks ago.

Hey Brian - looks like you don't have an AFS token.

> The permissions on the repo:

...don't really matter; you'll need to examine those directories using
something like 'fs listacl /afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo'. IIRC,
the default acl for directories in your home dir other than ~/public
includes 'system:anyuser l', which restricts even authenticated users
from listing the contents of a dir. When you connect via ssh, you don't
have any Kerb creds, and almost certainly no AFS token, which you would
need in order to even read files in that directory.

> </afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo>% ls -ld repo
>
> and the permissions of everything inside the repo:
>
> </afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo>% ls -lhrt
>
> Here's the ps output for svnserve:
>
> </afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo>% ps -ef | grep svn
> mbjohn 26337 1 0 06:59 ? 00:00:00 svnserve -d --threads --root
> /afs/acpub/users14/mbjohn/svn/repo
>
> I've tried running it as root, but I still get the same thing. Heck, I get
> the same thing when I don't have svnserve running.
>
> Any thoughts from those who have more SVN experience than I?

You should be able to configure your ssh client to use and delegate your
GSSAPI creds - what I can't recall offhand (or test, since I no longer
use AFS) is if you can also get a token as well. There is an
'KerberosGetAFSToken' option in recent sshd_config, which defaults to no
- you might try setting that...

Cheers,

-tt

The first thing that springs to my mind is AFS tokens. Are you using a
private key to connect to pils.netcom.duke.edu? If so, then you might
need to connect using your password once, do a klog, and then do the
checkout again. You'd need to klog once every 10 hours, or not use a
key to connect (which is a hassle, since Subversion makes 3 or 4
connections each time you try to do something). Another possibility
would be granting system:anyuser read rights to ~mbjohn/svn/, but that's
probably also not what you want.

Hope that helps,
Jeff
>> hour during the summer, Windows must update the CMOS TOD clock twice a year
>> to reflect the change. Some
>> rare failure modes can put the CMOS TOD clock out of step with the Windows
>> whether it has been updated, causing the Windows clock to be off by an hour
> question, but Seth beat me to it...all I needed was my gpg keys to get back
> my backups. All worked well.
...>
> As for Fedora 11, as always, the Fedora folks have done a great job. Doing a
> new install means a lot of work to get back to where it was, so I haven't
> gotten there yet, but I'm working on it. For one thing, I'm very happy that,
> for the first time since FC4, I was able to get my Broadcom wireless card in
> my Lat D610 working without ndiswrapper!

> Just to throw this out there, I am using F11 on my laptop, which spends most
> of its time docked. I installed the system-config-display package and have

Happy with F11 here, too: Tested F11 on a p4 toshiba a30 because
ubuntu-9.04 with 2.6.28 kept locking up and folks blamed that kernel.
(Memtest, smart and others found no hardware issues, and win7 ran ok
without lockups). F11 has run fine for the few hours I've used it, but I
was worried when I had the same hard-lockup twice in middle of the install
that I see in ubuntu: mouse and keyboard dead, no ssh, need to do hard
power-off and nothing useful in logs. Saw same symptoms in ubuntu904 about
every 20-30minutes. But I'm it looks like the installer boots a 2.6.28
kernel, so after a second try selecting fewer items to install, it
finished up before a lockup. After editing /etc/sysconfig/hddtemp to
"hddtemp -d /dev/sda" the gai-temp gives me hard-drive temperature in the
panel so I can watch for overheating, which this laptop is known for.
The acpi detection is iffy, even with newest (2007) bios... But so far it
looks to me like the 2.6.28 kernel has an issue at least on some laptops,
and I think F11 seems to confirm that.

--Hope this helps,
Bill Day

Fortunately I didn't end up with a > 400G tgz file (which is the size of the partition I was using), so it was only bigger than the stuff I was tarring up. I do recall, at one point, seeing the names of the files, and it looked something like this:

/home/mbjohn/../mbjohn/directory/filename
/home/mbjohn/../mbjohn/directory/filename2
/home/mbjohn/../mbjohn/directory2/filename
etc

which makes me wonder if I got my files in there twice.

As for Fedora 11, as always, the Fedora folks have done a great job. Doing a new install means a lot of work to get back to where it was, so I haven't gotten there yet, but I'm working on it. For one thing, I'm very happy that, for the first time since FC4, I was able to get my Broadcom wireless card in my Lat D610 working without ndiswrapper!

Just to throw this out there, I am using F11 on my laptop, which spends most of its time docked. I installed the system-config-display package and have everything set up correctly in there -- it recognizes the attached monitor as a Dell 1905FP, has the correct resolution (1280x1024). However, when docked, I can tell that I've got portions of my desktop going off the monitor -- at login, I don't see the options at the bottom for language, session, etc. When I'm logged in, maximized apps stop at the edges, as does my panel at the top, but when I put on a wallpaper with cute penguins at the center of it, and use "center", a quarter of the penguins end up at the bottom quarter of my screen. When I go to 'display' under 'preferences' (as opposed to 'administration', I'm shown that I have a laptop monitor and an unknown monitor. I click on 'detect monitors', but nothing happens. Outside of a few other config things there, there's not much that I can find that might help that issue. Everything comes up correctly when I'm undocked on my laptop.

I can definitely tell a speed improvement (it was running Fedora (Core? I can't remember) 9) and I like having my partitions encrypted.

Brian

On Tue, Jun 9, 2009 at 8:18 PM, Michael Ansel <dulug@...> wrote:
over-sized tar backup: Is that 20G larger than will fit on the
partition, or 20G larger than the data? I only ask because just last
week I goofed on my backup script and caused it to tar up the
directory containing the destination tar file. Needless to say, it
didn't like that very much and the infinite loop filled up the entire
drive pretty quick. So, I just wanted to throw that out there in case
you made the same mistake as me.

Also, while I can't speak for the other members of the list, I for one
would be interested in hearing how the migration to F11 goes: I'm
