So a UK newspaper (The Guardian) has been hit with an injunction to
prevent it reporting a question, asked in parliament by an MP paid by
the taxpayer.
The question relates to a report into toxic dumping off the Ivory Coast.
Astoundingly, the paper is also banned from identifying the MP who has
asked the question, what the question is, which minister might answer
it, or where the question is to be found, and from telling its readers
why the paper cannot reporting parliament. "Legal obstacles, which
cannot be identified, involve proceedings, which cannot be mentioned,
on behalf of a client who must remain secret."
We are sure The Guardian will challenge this legally, but surely
parliament itself and the office of the speaker - if it is interested
in open democracy - should be seen to act to maintain the trust of the
public.
