AMGM submenus

Current code now includes submenus for AMGM (=top menu) and automatic or user-defined (--nmenus X) number of menus and menu columns (--ncolumns Y) .

Menu links now link to tracks, not titles.

This turns out to be quite useful when a lot of tracks are to be linked to.

I'll soon try group-level menus (ATSM, group-level menus as opposed to top menus).

Also, a basic implementation of DVD-Text has been attempted. As my Pioneer does not have this feature, I would need contacts with prospective testers whose players are capable of reading DVDA-Text.

Slideshows (several still pictures for the same track) are now implemented (as of build 10 of version 09.09) and have been tested under linux.

Usage is, for example, for two tracks containing respectively 4 pics and 2 pics:

dvda-author -g ~/a.wav ~/b.wav --stillpics A.jpg,B.jpg,C.jpg,D.jpg-E.jpg,F.jpg --stilloptions rank=0,start=1,rank=1,start=10,rank=2,start=20,rank=3,start=40,rank=4,start=2,rank=5,start=15 -o ~/test2 --cdrecord --wordir ~

Slides are displayed after 1,10,20,40 s in track 1 and after 2 and 15 s for track 2.

An interesting application is slides containing lyrics for songs or verse for lieder...

09.09 release

The promised September release was uploaded on the last day of the month after a major revamp of the build system.
Following an initial suggestion of Lee's on this list, I've pruned off all third-party source code from the build tree (except for libogg, which is quite small) and replaced the packages with configure options.

The extra advantage of the approach is that it avoids the rather painful (for some users) patches to be manually performed agains mkisofs and dvdauthor. The new build system automates the whole process,
so that the application should be usable "out of the box" from install.
Full source code build is now triggered by:

./configure --enable-flac-download --enable-sox-patch --enable-dvdauthor-patch --enable-cdrtools-patch --enable-all-builds
make -j4

If dependencies were installed prior to this, the usual ./configure && make -j4 sequence will still be enough.

With multicore CPUs, do use -jN options with make, as this cuts down remarkably on both compiling and configuring times (this is why configuring of nested packages was delegated to Make in this new version).
See file INSTALL for details.

A revised webpage how-to is on the way for examples; in the meantime, check file EXAMPLES.

As this version is still quite fresh and not tested on Windows, I'll be grateful for feedback.

Yes, Martin, the arity of sox_flow_effects has been changed by the sox development team in v. 14.3.0.
The git code takes that into account. I should restrospectively add a patch for sox version in configure.ac of 09.05 when I have time.
You can manually patch your 09.05 version if you wish like this:
replace line 86 of libsoxconvert.c with the following chunk:

# if (SOX_LIB_VERSION_CODE >>8 & 0xff) < 3
sox_flow_effects(chain, NULL);

sox_flow_effects(chain, NULL, NULL);

It shoud work.

Otherwise try --enable-sox-build, which should help you out.

still picture authoring

On-going efforts have proven more fruitful than expected. You'll find here the current dev package:

This package offers still picture authoring (aka "stills") in addition to top-menus. A few transition effects (fade, dissolve, wipes, time lags) are included. Report to man page and file EXAMPLES for usage.
Tests have only been performed under linux and win32 porting amendments are in the pipeline before official release. Windows users can use cygwin for tests in the meantime.
I hope you'll enjoy this new version as I have myself.

To reply to some questions:
- I've been able to test sound OK in DVD-Audio zone video top menu (AUDIO_TS.VOB), in 48000:2:16 format as is requested by the norm (you should use MPEG2 video + signed 16 bit-big endian LPCM).
- good new too, I've finally patched the issue with -z (separation of titles when consecutive audio files have same audio characteristics). To force the authoring of a new title between say, two 44100:2:16 files, write:
-g file1.wav -z file2.wav ....
- at the following location, you can download a makeshift script which was used to author the iso from a VOB and several wav files:

The source code is only buildable under *nix (including cygwin), serious win32 porting is still to be done.

Surprisingly my player does not play back the sound, which may be due either to hardware limitations of software issues.

I do count on Udo's world-famous NADs to help me out of this issue...

Some progress has been made this week back from holiday:

- several issues fixed in unstable 09.07 package (previous post): pointers to 2nd group, fflush issues.
- added: automatic authoring of the background .mpg top menu from a jpeg picture, using mjpegtools (--background)
- used forks and pipes to realign output messages of the auxiliary tools being used into dvda-author stdout stream
- dynamically adding soundtracks to menus (--soundtrack)
- added or improved --mkiosfs, --cdrecord, --workdir, --tempdir

Currently the menu authoring capability is fully functional, however palette issues still remain to be dealt with (colour choices for menus, anti-aliasing).
You still have to draw a backgound images (.jpg) for buttons and text, and only three buttons are generated.
Automatic generation of button texts from disc configuration is under way.

Yes you're right on AC_PATH_PROG, I forgot an empty third argument [], the third one of the code being in fact the fourth, like this:

The easy way out is simply to install man2html and help2man, as it avoids the issue altogether...

dvda-author development is currently moving on.
This post is to announce the following new features of dvda-author that should be released in June or July with testing status -- testers wanted, especially for 3) and 4):

1) Some of Lee's features: optional same-audio title split (audio with same characteristics is currently put together in the same title, it will be possible to create two distinct titles); audio join (-gjoin switch of version S); user-specified channel assignment;
2) WAVEXT info extraction into database; integration of this text info into a new (currently unreferenced) DVDATXTDT-MG table (which could not be read by all players, however); extraction of this table by --extract
3) "non-stop" playback of adjoining groups; auto playback on launch (currently you either have to press a button on your remote or program your player to ensure non-stop playback; with this capability this will be useless)
4) [perphaps in July, not certain] multi-title video-linking groups.
5) [perhaps in July] extraction of multichannel disc tracks into separate mono or stereo audio files (without an editor);

1) 2) 3) and 5) are currently being tested and almost functional; 4) still needs a bit of sweat.
Save a minor patch, 09.05 will be stabilized and 09.06-testing uploaded before end of month with at least 1) 2) and 5) implemented.

Udo, could you send me a header (please not a whole wav file, unless if quite short) in which you get a "data chunk" as you'd like the app to parse it?
Currently I'm parsing the INFO list chunk in technical terms. Are you referring to the FACT chunk? Or any associate data chunk? Please send back some more detail on your request.

I know, but it would be nice if you handle most chunks well enough, including 

data, so that WAV is no longer a challenge but just works in most cases. 

(extremes excluded)

It could save me 10's of clicks in audacity when saving multiple... :-)

Headers are parsed for six types of metadata tags (filename, author, creation date, comment, copyright and style). More could be added yet many editors stick to these.
Audacity only fills in name, author, date and comment, why not more it's beyond my control, perhaps a bug.
I did not test with other editors.
Do not forget to use -finfodir=dir/ or -Finfodir=dir/ to enable this option.
I'd be a nice plus if Jerome Brock could fix his mkisofs version (the a58 patch seems to be broken) and add an option to ISO an extra data directory along with the others.
So that information is preserved and possibly retrievable from discs by editors or frontends (as I still have no clue about info chunks on DVD-A files).

dvda-author testing version with info chunk extraction

There's a testing version of a new capability for extracting info chunks from extended WAV headers to a textfile database :
RPM source package:

Syntax is dvda-author (options) --fixwav[-virtual]=(fixwav options),infodir=db

Header info is extracted to file db/database in plain text format.

Audacity compatibility was tested for audio format WAVEXT and usage of the audacity metadata editor.

So I tried and indeed, now dvda-author builds the rpm!

But why doesn't configure work for /usr instead of /usr/local ?

then ran it again when i realized. trying it on a clean directory worked. Thanks!

Hi Scott, it's what happens on some platforms that need prior reconfiguring of the build system, or sometimes when you configured with some ./configure ... command line parameters then reconfigure again with other parameters.
The INSTALL file has some advice in it about it, search for the section on regenerating the build system. In short, launch ./autogen priori to ./configure. Install autoconf, automake and libtool before.
Should the problem persist, please report. A workaround is to install OS X libogg-dev distribution package.
Some software developers (e.g the codeblocks team) only distribute autogen without configure to avoid such issues.

However before doing that just unpack your source afresh (index -3 uploaded yesterday), to a clean directory and relaunch ./configure --enable-all-builds, it might just work out well.

PS: for your front-end, as for mine by the way, it might be a cool idea at least to enable a command line window pop-up if fixwav needs some interaction with user (otherwise you may just compile by adding --without-fixwav to your configure command line).

It appears to be some strangeness when using rpmbuild -ts.
When using the newer source it works better.

But:

Although the prefix is set als /usr rpmbuild installs in /usr/local and thus the fileglobs don't find the files....

How to fix in the most elegant way?

Hi Lee,
if you'd like practising some VM there's the dvd-video doc mentioned in the 'links' webpage, DVD-Video Information subsection (two links).
I referred to just one experiment in the some notes on hybrids (2) webpage.
The player's response issue is also what I'm referring t in these pages wrt gaps, in a less technical style.
Admittedly it should be measured in some way to be able to assess player performance.

Actually, it isn't so bizarre if you make the assertion that the player, upon receipt of a track change signal, takes some action that results in a small discontinuity of the sound. In one experiment, I split a file at a legal split point, forming two files. When authored, the sound of a gapless-noncompliant player blips at that point. If the AOB file is examined, it is clear that there is no discontinuity.

I believe you are absolutely correct in saying that the only way to achieve truly continuous sound on a noncompliant player is to eliminate the track change entirely. I have been pursuing workarounds based on the simple idea of offering alternative playback paths of the same sequence of tracks, such that the track transitions are suppressed. This is perfectly feasible, but the practical problem is coming up with a formula that might be acceptable to the user and that does not confuse the player. It would help a lot if we had more information about the specification of the player' s response. You have mentioned the concept of a virtual machine; is there somewhere I can look to find out about this?

I have done many such experiments. On a gapless-noncompliant player,

-g a.wav a.wav

will blip between the first and second instances of a.wav .

The blip will be even more prominent, even on most gapless-compliant players I suspect, if a title change occurs, as in

-g a.wav b.wav

if a.wav is different audio from b.wav

In version S the syntax

-g a.wav -title a.wav

forces a new title, and the gap is similarly prominent.
