Hey everyone:

I'm looking for the best bang for the buck flash bracket to use with my 20D
(no battery pack) and 380EX with OCS2.  I have no plans to buy the battery
pack, and only possibly a 550/580EX in the distant future.

I want something to help me shoot weddings so I would mainly be using it
horizontally, but I would like a bracket that puts the flash almost directly
over the lens in a vertical composition as well.

I've been looking at:

Stratos 835
Stroboframe Quick Flip 350
Flash Frame FlashFlip
Stroboframe Camera Flip

I really haven't considered the Stroboframe Pro-T or Press-T... does anyone
want to give their input on how these compare to the cheaper models I'm
looking at?

In general, I just want something that isn't going to flop around, is
adjustable enough to suit me, maintains proper orientation for full flash
coverage, and has a tripod thread on the bottom.

I followed the wedding photography tip and the flash head configuration
threads.

Thanks for any opinions, ideas, and reputable retail locations (I normally
buy from B&H).

Brian

You're making a mistake if you think that wedding photos are primarily
horizontal.  I'll bet 85% of all wedding photos are vertical
composition.  Almost all people photos are, that's why it's called
"portrait."

Probably closer to 90%...

Back to the original question.  I'm very happy with my
Pro-T. The only real negative is that it takes up a
lot of space when not in use. I think Stroboframe has
a new bracket that is similar in design, but folds
into a smaller bundle when not in use. My preference
for handheld use is for a bracket that flips the
flash, rather than the camera.

I'll second the motion on the Pro-T.  Heather and I both use them with
Quantum T4d flash heads, and they work great.  The only issue I have with it
is that it partially blocks the controls on the grip on my 20D, but they're
still accessible. But, unlike some of the other Stroboframes, it is oriented
in the right direction, the others have you holding the camera upside down
in relation to the grip controls.
It does keep the flash dead over the lens.

Thanks for the opinions on the Pro-T and Stroboframe.

All of the discussion about vertical vs horizontal got me looking at my
archives, and I admit, many of the action shots are vertical... bride+groom
standing = vertical composition.  I guess when I typed the email, I was
thinking about the typical wedding group shots that are done horizontally.

So far, I'm leaning towards the Pro-T or the Quick Flip 350.  I'm just not
sure if the Pro is worth the extra cost.

Make sure the Quick Flip orients the camera in the way you like.  The 350
looks like it mounts to the left of the camera, which leaves the shutter
button on vertical at the bottom.  Some people like to hold a camera like
that, but I don't.  And it makes the controls on the grip, if you have one,
moot.  The Pro-T goes on the right of the camera, so when it flips to
vertical, leaves the controls on the top of the camera...

Brian,

I misread you message and replied too fast. If these are the two, the
Pro T is well worth the extra. The 350 flips the flash but puts the
shutter release at the bottom, not convenient at all. Plus you cannot
use the anti-twist plates or quick release with the 350, but you can
with the Pro T. Something that again is worth the few extra $ to secure
you camera to the bracket.
