Original Question:

We need to format values in a string field. These are 10 character
parcel IDs in this format - 1234567899, which we want to format to
123-45-67-899.

Summary Solution:

Almost all of the responses suggested to use field calculator with VBA
text parsing and concatenation commands. One response mentioned python
scripting and creating a tool to use in later instances. For the field
calculator operation, a text field needs to be created with the
following code applied -

Left([Field],3) & "-" & Mid([Field],4,2) & "-" & Mid([Field],6,2) & "-"
&

Right([Field],3)

Thanks to all responders, there was a huge response. Following is a list
(in no particular order):

ENCK Dave, Kyle Ostapuk, Ray Willis, Ian McGovern, Sonia Dickerson,
Brad, Layne Seely, Daniel Gluck, Jim Dahl, Jeff Jenness, Greg Burgess,

Many thanks to the folks who answered my post with the solution. For the line symbol pick a standard "Arrow At Start" or "Arrow At End". Then under properties of that symbol I go to the "Line Properties" tab and then under the "Line Decorations" section I click on Properties. Under "Number of Positions" input the number of intermediate arrow heads you require.

That works for me.

Thanks!

I recently summarized some research to see if a python script could be
converted into a .DLL file and called through a button. While it appears
that python cannot be converted to a .DLL, the script can still be run
through the use of a button control. A big shout out to Nobbir Ahmed with
ESRI who help me find this solution!

To run a python script, or any tool or model created and saved in a
toolbox, from a button - customize your toolbars, switch to the COMMANDS
tab, at the bottom highlight [UIControls] click "New UIControl", select
UIButtonControl and click "create and edit". The VB Editor window opens.
Paste the code supplied below, replacing the name of the toolbox AND the
name of the tool or script you wish to reference. Pay close attention to
your scripts actual location and name, NOT ITS LABEL. These can be got by
right clicking the tool in Catalog and reviewing the properties.

Click save in the VB editor and close it. Navigate back to your
customize>COMMANDS>UIControl, and drag the button to a toolbar location.
You can rename or change the icon as needed.

This works well - enjoy.

Bret.

I'd like to ask for any advice on bringing CAD drawings into a subdivision layer. Does anyone have a process in place for this? What about older paper drawings? I'm thinking this has to be a manual, one-by-one operation.

We have previously depended upon our Property Appraiser's parcels layer and dissolve on subdiv code to create a countywide subdivision layer. Linework is usually good enough but data input seems to be a problem. We are after more reliability and accuracy.
About a subdivision layer:
How do you use a subdivision GIS layer?
What data do you have for each subdivision?
What processes or procedures rely on this info?

I will sum.

[SUM] Python to DLL

Summary of what i learnt - IT CANT BE DONE

From an ESRI Support Analyst I have been working with on a related issue:

You cannot directly tie in a python file to a DLL that I know of. There
might be a custom library out there that allows this but that would not be
supported by ArcGIS if there were issues with the DLL after the fact.

Why a button in the first place? You're making a tool that has a built in
form already and all the user has to do is place the Toolbox and PY file in
the same folder and they can use it all day long. Trying to make a DLL out
of a python script would be basically making this more difficult then it
needs to be and if you want to go the way of DLL then you need to get out of
the Python realm altogether and work in VB.NET or C# and create a custom DLL
for ArcGIS Desktop. Do not use VBA as it goes away after 9.4 so it's
recommended to use the other two languages. In 9.4 you can also use Java to
make an addin but that's not going to be out until next year so don't worry
about it.

And from Sai Dhalli, a fellow ESRI Listserver:

Arcmap is a .Net framework , I dont think you can add python scripts as
elements to it. They are from a totally different family. There are
certainly some ways, but not straightforward.

Hello All: Was hoping to get help with a very frustrating little problem dealing with Solar Radiation calculation in Spatial Analyst.

My steps:
1. Calculate area solar radiation on original DEM1.

2. Convert original DEM1 to ascii file using RASTERToASCII_conversion function, producing DEM1.asc file.

3. Convert DEM1.asc from (2) right back to a raster using ASCIIToRaster_conversion function, producing new DEM2. Note that completely identical to DEM1.

4. Run Area solar radiation on (3)'s DEM2 and get order of magnitude completely different values for my solar radiation grid. (I make sure all default parameters are completely the same for all solar radiation function calls.)

I have looked at ascii file for both (1)-DEM1 and (3)-DEM2 -- the original and the converted back and they are completely identical -- pulled them in to python and did a string comparison even. Even using the describe function on both DEM1 and DEM2 shows identical raster grids...

Any help would be greatly appreciated on this problem (need to desperately work with ascii files outside of arc and send desperate list serve plead of help as last resort).

Good Afternoon Folks:

Thanks to everyone that pointed me to the "Select Layer By Attribute"
tool. This has worked quite well for me, thanks. However,
unfortunately, I have not received any responses regarding whether
installing SP6 was the culprit that changed the models ability to
accomplish the original selection as outlined in the initial email (see
below).

Layne

>Good Morning Everyone:
>
>Recently I found that a model I had built, prior to installing SP6, was
no longer functioning
>properly. The version of software that I am currently using is ArcGIS
ArcInfo 9.2 (build 1500). In
>this model, I am using the following SQL query to select records from a
table (i.e
>Polygon_Properties) that do not relate to records in a feature class
(i.e. Landscape_Polygons) via the
>attribute "LandscapePolygonID" both of which are within a Personal
Geodatabase. Myself and a
>co-worker both absolutely remember this query working in the past.
>
>[LandscapePolygonID] not in (select [LandscapePolygonID] from
Landscape_Polygons)
I want to add a button to the editing toolbar, so that you can substitute the actual geometry of a polygon with the geometry from an object in another layer. - For instance you have a featureclass with lakes but the shape of some of the lakes is not correct. - So you have another layer with lakes with the correct geometry. - So you want to substitute the geometry with the shape of the lake with correct geometry, but keep all attributes.

Greetings,

My task is to compute point density within a 8 mile radius from the center of the circle.

I have a fire damage dataset in point shapefile format and the center of the circles around which (i.e from 8 mile of the radii) I need to compute density of the fire damage. During density computation, fire damage points close to the center should count more than points further from the center. I have created the buffer of 8 mile from the center of the different circles to determine the number of fire damage locations within the circle. After this I couldnot figure out the process that helps me to achieve my objective of computing point density. Your suggestions in this regard would be of great help.

Sorry the uninstall was not complete, and hope you had a good experience
otherwise with LP360
that might lead to a future purchase.

As mentioned on the phone, you want to make sure the DLLs are unregistered.
To do this, run (double-click in Explorer) the file C:\Program
Files\LP360\bin\unregall.bat
(I run a program called RegDllView to check what DLLs are registered, look for
LASSymbols.dll, etc.)
Also, you should disable the extension in ArcMap.

Hope this helps,
Thanks,
