Easier ways to allow users to get the announcement of new Tiki releases by email? In the direction of making tiki as easy for new users/admins, I'm afraid
that new users/admins don't get prompt information about new releases (like 3.1 over 3.0 nowadays, or specially, any security-fix release). I know we do our best to publish an article at main tw.o sites (info.tw.o and tw.o, afaik) when a new version is released, but I always wished we had an easy way to "subscribe" by email to those new releases. And that is not easy or intuitive at all for new users/admins, in the way things work (or we have them configured) right now. Nowadays, I guess that the (non-intuitive) process would be: (1) Go to tw.o/tiki-index.php (and not just tw.o, otherwise you go to info.tw.o, where you don't see easily how to log in) and login. (2) Go to the side menu "Menu > MyTiki > My Watches" (tiki-user_watches.php) (3) At "Add Watch", select "A user submits an article", and click on "Add". The page they would see afterwards is not that intuitive of what happened, if they already have many watches in that tw site, but I guess that this would work: new security releases (or any other type of article) would be sent by email. Alternatively, add a link manually to those pages which says something like: "Subscribe to new articles by email" and links to something linke: tiki-user_watches.php?event=article_submitted&add=Add , visible by anonymous. I tried, and they will be required to login first, and then, the link will be executed so that they are subscribed to it. The page they would see afterwards is not that intuitive of what happened, if they already have many watches in that tw site. I thought in other (better, imho) ways to do this: (a) have an email list called "tikiwiki-releases" at sf.net for that, announce it as much as possible whereever is needed, and let the article editors send a copy to that list in the same moment they post the article at tw.o site (If I'm not wrong, Tiki 3.x allows to do that at posting articles time). Or even better, we could have the email address of that list set to the article topic "New releases", so that it sends a copy of the message at every posting with this "article toptic" selected. I haven't tried that myself, and is not easy to find (only available when you edit an article topic, not when creating it), but I see that this is somewaht possible in Tiki 3.x . This way is just half-dogfooding, since we are not using just our resources (Tiki doesn't have an email-list) (b) for a 100% Tiki dogfooding solution, we could use either the "Newsletter" or "GroupWatch" feature, having the group "Registered" (or a new group in tw.o called like "Subscribers_to_new_Tiki_releases" ) and let the user join/unjoin that group through the PluginSubscribeGroup freely. When a new article is posted regarding a new release, "somehow" (but easily) send a copy of that message to the appropriate newsletter, or a broadcast message to that user group (or through GroupWatch feature if it would be implemented with article postings, which I don't know whether it is already implemented or not). But in any case, somehow more easier for new users about new releases. My 2 cents. Xavi P.s: I did apply the improvements I could do with my currents skills (added the hand-made improvements to the homepages of tw.o and info.tw.o in the langs I know, in order to get emails for any type of new articles posted ). For those of you who would like to get subscribed also with the minium number of clicks, you can click at the links below, for the sake of easyness: http://tikiwiki.org/tiki-user_watches.php?event=article_submitted&add=Add or http://info.tikiwiki.org/tiki-user_watches.php?event=article_submitted&add=Add ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Tikiwiki-users mailing list Tikiwiki-users@... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/tikiwiki-users |

Re: [Tikiwiki-devel] Easier ways to allow users to get the announcement of new Tiki releases by email?Hi!
This is a good time to announce that I no longer wish to do the marketing around releases. So in addition to a new/improved method, we need new people :-) So this should be taken up by the marketing group or a release group. I'll be available to train / document / transfer knowledge. Besr regards, M ;-) On 7/23/09, Xavier de Pedro <xavier.depedro@...> wrote: > In the direction of making tiki as easy for new users/admins, I'm afraid > that new users/admins don't get prompt information about new releases > (like 3.1 over 3.0 nowadays, or specially, any security-fix release). > > I know we do our best to publish an article at main tw.o sites > (info.tw.o and tw.o, afaik) when a new version is released, but I always > wished we had an easy way to "subscribe" by email to those new releases. > And that is not easy or intuitive at all for new users/admins, in the > way things work (or we have them configured) right now. > > Nowadays, I guess that the (non-intuitive) process would be: > (1) Go to tw.o/tiki-index.php (and not just tw.o, otherwise you go to > info.tw.o, where you don't see easily how to log in) and login. > (2) Go to the side menu "Menu > MyTiki > My Watches" (tiki-user_watches.php) > (3) At "Add Watch", select "A user submits an article", and click on > "Add". > The page they would see afterwards is not that intuitive of what > happened, if they already have many watches in that tw site, but I guess > that this would work: new security releases (or any other type of > article) would be sent by email. > > Alternatively, add a link manually to those pages which says something > like: "Subscribe to new articles by email" and links to something linke: > tiki-user_watches.php?event=article_submitted&add=Add , visible by > anonymous.
