Initial contact with BIRT

Hello anyone.

I'm using birt about 2 months and It was very helpful to me.

I'm integrated the BIRT to my PHP application, because PHP haven't a professional tool for Reports, only BIRT and JasperReports (I choosed BIRT by license).

Well, now I need extend the BIRT, allowing to send multiple parameters to the query. I followed this tutorial (http://fahadzia.wordpress.com/2008/08/30/using-inlike-clause-in-birt/), but I break at the part of java code. The method described to use is beforeOpen, but I haven't this method in Script Tab of my report. I tryed modifing the RTPDesign, but no success.

Well, how can I do this work? I'm using BIRT Engine OSGi Runtime SDK Feature 2.5.1.v20090706-579185tEz0JlRz-E-AqMYGmcLbGr org.eclipse.birt.osgi.runtime.sdk.feature.group for eclipse.

The concern on the EPL licensed code is :

under the EPL license it is allowed to re-distribute small amounts of

source like javascript and jsp's when it is unlikely it is changed.

In Birt there is an entire javascript library (30+ files) which could

not be  considered a "small amount of source" even if it is unlikely to

be changed in anyway.

that is why we ask specifically from you guys the approval to include

the runtime in Apache OFBiz.

I too faced the same problem with the newer version of BIRT. Though I am not using a server, the memory consumption is high and the application fails after throwing "Heap Space: Out of Memory error".

I have reported the same through Bugzilla (Bug - 295560).

If anybody of you have found a solution, pls let me know.

I have a sample report that runs fine from eclipse birt plugin. When I move
the report to my webapp, and call ReportEngine from my servlet, I do not see
the jdbc query executed.

I have one report parameter ( RP_demo ) in the query which I pass using the

I downloaded BIRT 2.3 as an eclipse plugin. I have a webapp into which I
would like to integrate birt. I have created a demo report from the
designer. I am wondering which jars to be included in my release - for my
web app to run the report ? I am not using the webapp shipped with birt to
run the reports - rather I have a servlet instantiating the ReportEngine.

There is no such capability for controlling the Excel output from BIRT to this extent. However, if you are looking at automating the creation of highly functional native Excel spreadsheets, you might want to take a look at Actuate's BIRT Spreadsheet product. It's a commercial product that is focused exactly on this type of problem.

Project meta data is out of date for birt

Projects are required to keep meta data up to date using the MyFoundation
Portal (http://portal.eclipse.org/). The following problems were found
with this project's meta-data:

* The date for release "2.0" uses the no-longer-supported mm/yyyy date
format (1/2006). Please use MM/DD/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD. If you are unsure of
the date, we recommend you use the last date of the month.
* The date for release "2.3.0" is in the past, but the release is not
marked as completed. If it is completed, it should be marked as completed;
if it has been postponed, it should be given a new target date.
* There is no next/future release of this project. All Eclipse projects
must have a "next release" planned and scheduled.

If you have the same kind of issue with PDF rendering and are doing your own integration you could try this.

Part of our bug investigation was first to use the Birt WebWiewerApplication : then we saw that the PDF export looked perfect.

Then, it was obviously some parameter setup of the engine to be corrected.

You are correct in that a connection being present in library and also in design file means 2 connections are spawned. If you check what is happening on those connections, the library needs are from the library and the design needs from the design file.

Now, on the single one not closing, I found that when there is an error in execution, BIRT does not close the connection. I also remember that were I to click cancel during execution that process does not stop but BIRT does end up closing the connection. However, if I clicked cancel and then retried, then one of those 2 connections would not be closed.

Those were my observations of closing connections.

The connection remaining open after error was very reproducible.

I use a cross tab in my report. The data are retrieved from a scripted data source.
When I run the report the query runs 3 times. With the same data. The problem is the execution time of the query which is half an hour, roughly. Or 1.5 hours because it runs 3 times.

Why does it run 3 times? Can I dissuade birt from doing it?

Hello,

You can add two report parameters "startrecord" and "endrecord" and make your report design filter by record number / row number.
Then you can generate different report documents by specifying parameter values like startrecord=1, endrecord=1000 for the first one, startrecord=1001, endrecord=2000 for the second one, etc, and save the report document using different names.

Thanks for your valuable input. I already downloaded the extended emitters and copy to my computers using the instructions below w/c I get from the Internet search. However, I had some minor problems, the drop-down options for XLS will no longer display in BIRT.

To install:

Dump it in the directory
ROOT\birt-rcp-report-designer\plugins\
org.uguess.birt.report.engine.emitter.xls_2.3.0.200807241457 with all its contents and subfolders. In the main root directory
you will find the xls-emitter.jar. Do not copy this to the root directory
of the plugins directory - it will not work.

You'll also need to get the recommended POI jar
and dump it in the lib directory

i.e. plugins\
org.uguess.birt.report.engine.emitter.xls_2.3.0.200807241457\lib\
poi-3.1-FINAL-20080629.jar

You'll also need to rename or delete the original
org.eclipse.birt.report.engine.emitter.prototype.excel_2.3.1.v20080917.jar

If you're using the All-In-One Version of BIRT an Eclipse Project

This is due to the format of the Excel file generated by BIRT. BIRT generates it's Excel files in the SpreadSheetML format which was a horrible attempt at storing the Excel spreadsheets in XML. Now Office 2007 follows the Open XML format. If you want BIRT to generate true Excel Binary files you should use the open source Tribix project. http://sourceforge.net/projects/tribix/

Crosstab custom format measure

Hey all,

I'm busy with creating a crosstab report.

The summary field is a value expressed in meters.
I have a custom format that it's called through a external custom class.
I want to do something like this in the expression: "var f = Packages.com.example.Utils().toKm(measure['distance']); f"
for example: if the value is 5000 then it's formatted in 5 km.

How can I do this?

Hallo,
I'd like to post to this mailing list... is it possible?

The message is:

Hi all,
I'm new in developing with Birt's API ..so I need your help for solve my
problem.

At the moment, I'm able to create image with URL source type (the url links
my application that integrates BirtEngine; ie.
"/SpagoBIBirtReportEngine/BirtImageServlet?chart_label=CHR_SEX_AGE&cat_group="+params["cat_group"].value),
so with any modifies to BirtImageServlet I can execute an external chart,
get its inputstream and view the result like an image. It runs correctly if
I export the document in HTML format BUT if I export the same document in
PDF format I have next error:

"Current report item is not supported in this report format."

I think because  the pdf format doesn't support 'URL' like source type. I'm
wrong?

Someone can help me with some suggestions?
I need a general management for obtain external chart and it must be able to
export in any format (html, pdf, jpg as minimum).
