But I just have to do it as there is no other option(I don't have truckloads of money to waste on windoze or M$ Office). doc, ppt, xls are proprietary M$ formats. doc and docx gets rendered very badly in Open Office. It would have been much better if everyone used open standards (my personal opinion in any case, someone may prefer M$ or other proprietary stuff). That's why I think the OP requested others to send him documents created using open formats. Anyway now coming to the original topic. I am interested to buy an eeePC too. However I have heard that ASUS has stopped selling eeePCs pre-installed with Linux and all the models available now have windoze, atleast that's what my local reseller told me. -- Sambit Bikas Pal MS 4th Year Indian Institute Of Science Education & Research Kolkata, Web: http://www.botcyb.org OpenPGP Key: http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x8E57F8B897D372B3 -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@... Re: EeePCDear Sambit, dear Everybody
> However I have heard that ASUS has stopped selling eeePCs > pre-installed with Linux and all the models available now have > windoze, atleast that's what my local reseller told me. I am afraid, the info of your local reseller is correct. Here in The Netherlands, I have been trying to find the Eee PC 1000, a nice model with 40 GB solid state disk and preinstalled Linux. However, it is simply impossible to find it here. Only the Windoze version is available here. Additionally - take a quick look at this website: http://eeepc.asus.com Now, I see there only models with Windows. At several places at that page, I have seen the following phrase: "Asus recommends Windows R for everyday computing". (R: the R within a little circle, 'registered trademark'.) At websites of Dell and some other computer manufacturers, you can see similar messages. It witnesses a kind of monopolistic behaviour which needs to be severely punished by the anti cartel authorities in Europe, the USA and elsewhere. It is nearly impossible to buy a computer or laptop without Windows..... Respectfully yours, Bas. -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@... Re: EeePCMe and my wife has an Eee PC 900 (one each). Hers has Ubuntu 9.04 and
mine has Mandriva Linux Free 2009.1. I like Mandriva since it seems a lot faster than Ubuntu, especially it feels like OpenOffice.org runs quite a lot faster for some strange reason. Maybe it's just a feeling of some kind. I am using the 1000H and have upgraded from eeebuntu to jaunty net book remix quite happily. eeebuntu was good for pre jaunty due to poor driver support, but that seems to have been solved now. i had a few problems with the wireless, but you can find heaps of info on the forums, this being the best so far: http://www.ab9il.net/linuxwireless/rt2860.html note that it's a little out of date - the new version of the driver is up to 2.1.2.0, you need to run the make command from /2009_0424_RT2860_Linux_STA_V2.1.1.0 not the one listed, plus, you should run sudo make && sudo make install for it to work error free. Note that fully up to date I am running the 2.6.28-11 kernel - this driver makes it into the 2.6.29 kernel, so it wont even be an issue soon. apart from that, it works a dream -- "I'm in IT and we generally know how to use the interwebs like superheros." - AF -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@...
