Dear Friends,

Further to my email of 17th July, I wondered if you had a chance to look through the Elected Representatives (Prohibition of Deception) Bill. I would be very interested in any thoughts you may have and if you would consider supporting the Bill.

I have again attached the Bill for your perusal and very much look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Rachel

Subject: Inquiry re. support - The Ministry of Truth

Dear Friends,

In 2007 Spirit Level Films made the documentary, The Ministry of Truth, which was screened on the BBC as part of their ‘Why Democracy?’ season. The Ministry of Truth is part film, part deadly serious campaign. It led to the Elected Representatives (Prohibition of Deception) Bill - a law that makes it illegal for politicians to deceive the public. Unsurprisingly, without Government support the Bill fell at second reading but the media and the public were very keen on the idea.

Two years on the DVD is being released and these issues are clearly more relevant than ever. We are now calling for the Government to make parliamentary time for the Bill, a call supported by a wide range of people and organisations including Baroness Helena Kennedy, Dom Joly, Martin Bell, Mark Thomas, the Jury Team and numerous cross party MPs.

The Bill is seen by constitutional experts like Professor John Keane of Westminster University as the key to restoring public trust and Sir Alistair Graham, Committee of Standards and Privileges Chairman 2004-2007 has also endorsed the Bill, adding his name to the growing list of supporters. Last week our AOL poll found an astonishing 93% of 77,000 people supported such legislation and inside Westminster support is growing every day.

Along with a whole raft of extras the DVD shows two versions of the film; the original as screened by the BBC and a second version with extra footage that couldn’t be shown for legal reasons featuring Dom Joly as The Professor guiding the viewer along the journey.

Firstly we’d be delighted to have People in Common on board in supporting this call for the Bill to be reintroduced and debated in the House. It would also be great to talk about the possibility and options of advertising the DVD at reduced cost to your members and supporters. The film is a fantastic educational tool for informing people of their rights with regard to their elected representatives.

I have attached the Bill for your perusal and it would be great to have a chat with someone about this.

Thank you for your help and I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Rachel
