There are several "fixes" for the early model Virago starters. Most will work for a while, but none of them will cure the "box of rocks" sound you hear when you try to start the bike. Just a bad design. You see, the starter is already spinning when it engages the flywheel gears and that's the sound you hear. There is a permenant fix for the XV920. It requires replacing the starter, solenoid, case cover, etc. with one from an 84/85 1000 or 86 or later 700/750 or 1100. Solves the problem, but the parts are expensive. If you are interested in doing it, I can send you the parts list and the wiring diagram for the rewiring of the starter circuit that is required.
