New Yamaha Virago Owner long time Honda Owner.
Having a couple problems. First both my Oil level light and battery light are on.  I know the oil level is ok cause I just changed the oil and I'm pretty sure it's charging because I checked it with a volt meter.  Could these be related.
Second when I try to start it sometimes the starter spins but the engine doesn't turn.  Now I heard of a modification to the starter to prevent the outside ring of the sun gear from turning using shims. is the correct and if so where do I get the shims?  Any help will be appreciated

There are several "fixes" for the early model Virago starters. Most will work for a while, but none of them will cure the "box of rocks" sound you hear when you try to start the bike. Just a bad design. You see, the starter is already spinning when it engages the flywheel gears and that's the sound you hear. There is a permenant fix for the XV920. It requires replacing the starter, solenoid, case cover, etc. with one from an 84/85 1000 or 86 or later 700/750 or 1100. Solves the problem, but the parts are expensive. If you are interested in doing it, I can send you the parts list and the wiring diagram for the rewiring of the starter circuit that is required.

Did you ever find a solution to the problem about the oil level light and nuetral light staying on. My '82 Virago 750 does the same thing. I can turn key on and turn it off and the nuetral light will stay on after key is off. My new battery keeps going dead and will not hold  a charge.
