Enblend error: Mask is entirely black, but white image was not identified as redundant

I just encountered an enblend error. At the end of a Hugin run, I get
this message:

-------(1)-------
enblend: an exception occured
Mask is entirely black, but white image was not identified as
redundant.
make: *** [blend.tif] Error 1
-------(1)-------

After that, the process is interrupted. All intermediate TIFFs are
generated, but not the final, enblended, one.
A little back in the log, I read this:

-------(2)-------
[...]
Loading next image: blend0019.tif
Loading next image: blend0020.tif
Loading next image: blend0021.tif
Creating blend mask: 1/4 2/4 3/4 4/4
Optimizing 1 distinct seam.

Strategy 1, s0: 1/4enblend: some images are redundant and will not be
blended.
enblend: some images are redundant and will not be blended.
 2/4 3/4 4/4
Strategy 2: s0
Using 7 blending levels
[...]
-------(2)-------

From the preview it is clear that some images are completely
overlapped by other images and probably won't be shown in the final
output. However this shouldn't prevent enblend from finalizing the
image, I'd presume.

It seems the issue has been encountered earlier by Michael Galloway.
Guio Kohlmeyer's solution was to pass the option '--fine-mask' to
enblend. I find that a strange solution slash workaround, which did
the trick by the way. But I still consider this an error.

One thing I noticed was that message (2) is still spawned, but in a
different form. Instead of the enblend message coming after 'Strategy
1, s0: 1/4', it now appears just before it. Could the error be in this
part? It looks like this:

-------(3)-------
[...]
Optimizing 1 distinct seam.
enblend: some images are redundant and will not be blended.
enblend: some images are redundant and will not be blended.
Strategy 1, s0: 1/4 2/4 3/4 4/4
Strategy 2: s0
Using 7 blending levels
[...]

Without seeing the tiffs, it is difficult to be specific. I could
imagine that you have one of the following:
- strange dimensions for the tiffs (for example very long, very
narrow, very small)
- strange shapes for the images in the tiffs (very small, with holes,
non connected)
- an issue with one of the tiffs (have you tried deleting one of the
"redundant" images?)

It would be interesting to know the pto that generated this, since I
agree with you, this should be avoided,

Best,

Seb

Okay I have to admit that the files I fed into Hugin were quite
different from normal panorama input. Instead of using pictures taken
from a single point, I moved the camera along the scene. This will
obviously make it more difficult to find a "pleasing" solution, but I
wasn't going for the aestetics anyway. Still, errors like this
shouldn't occur, even with the strangest input.

Basically, the pictures themselves are normal 35mm (equivalent)
rectilinear pictures (within the margin of the camera of course), with
a 4:3 ratio. The final output has a ratio of about 7:2, so not really
strange here. All 31 images are connected. The output TIFFs are all
normal, except for the final output, which is an illegal/incomplete 8
byte file.

I've just uploaded both the pto and the log as Google documents:

pto: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dhb9htjv_20fnckngd6
log: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dhb9htjv_21dczt5bdd

The log seems a little bit different from what I posted above, as you
can see. Either the logging system doesn't always handle the output in
the correct order, or things are really not always executed in order
and may interfere???

I've encountered the error with the enblend.exe bundled with Hugin-
svn3649, which is enblend version 3.2. No options changed, except for
TIFF compression.

Hmmmm - could you run enblend with the -v option? this gives the sizes
of the different images being blended.

Best,

Seb

Hello,

The --fine-mask was a solution to a different problem, greyish rims in
stitched images.

Not resulting in an error, but faulty blending, can result when one of
the input photos has a hole. There one workaround is to resort to the
old seam placement at mid-distance of the overlap area. It also
depends on the image sequence. For this bug I posted a test case at
http://wiki.panotools.org/Enblend_Testcase_2008-05-02 a while ago.

Good bug hunting

Klaus

I just got the same error with SVN 3966 on Vista.
The 10 jpeg-images are made with a 350D and they are well connetced. I
can post them if this helps.
Perhaps the message close to the end helps:

Optimizing 0 distinct seams.
Strategy 2:

Thank you for providing help – if needed I can do tests to help to
find out why it fails.

Dear  Thomas,

The error is a common problem. Try to use the additional enblend
parameter "--fine-mask" to ged rid of the error. The parameter will
result in generation of masks in higher resolution which may may fix the
problem, but sometimes may result in memory errors cause not enough
memory available for bigger masks.

I tried it and it worked. Thanks! :)

If I can help somehow to get closer to the problem to avoid the error
in the future, please let me know (test case, bug report -
dontknow...)

Dear  Thomas

It is a known problem or rather a drawback of enblend. I have a test
case available too. Due to the fact that enblend is an external tool and
not a component of hugin it is not a show stopper for the release.
Anyway this is my impression of the case.
It is always a trade off between memory consumption and accuracy. Maybe
the author of enblend can inplement a switch function to prevent the
problem.  I'm not familiar with the algorithm and don't know whether it
is possible or not.

Wouldn't it be possible for hugin to intercept this error message and
set --finemask by itself and retry?

regards
Joachim

It could, but this problem really needs to be fixed in enblend.
