Encrypt v7 back to v6.1

Just wondering if there is a workaround for 'Encrypt' from v7 back to v6.1

eg. v6.1 only takes (string, key) where as v7 takes (string, key, algorithm, encoding)

I have a project that was written for 7 and has 'algorithm and encoding' included in the encrypt function but the hosting plan the client currently has is only 6.1 and is not looking to ugrade to v7 for some time, so I am looking for a workaround to include algorithm and encoding into the function.
