Excution of parallel activities concurrently

Hi,
I have a question on Shark's parallel activity execution. Do Shark execute parallel activities in two different threads or is it executed in same thread one after another?. My tests show that both parallel activities are executed in same thread ie. one after another. I used AND split condition for parallel activity.

What about conditinal transitions? You could always 'leave' the process wiht a transition ("on exception"). Isn't that a possibility?

How and where would you call this process.abort ? - in en external applications which accesses the engine via an API ? (We could do that.But prefer a different solution.

Ideally we would do it within the process definition (in the XPDL) - "from within the process").
Something like "super-end node" in the XPDL.

I am not sure if the engine would like a a JavaClassToolAgent which calls process.abort (Activity tries to kill the Parent Process) ? Would it work or crash the engine?

I know exactly why you are asking because I had the same problem. I wanted to terminate the process abruptly if some sort of exceptional case occurs. You may try to use a tool activity that will execute this command as I was advice before but it is not clear how engine will react to that suicide action. I had to abort the process externally.

Enhydra Shark Configuration required for MySQL with JBoss!!!

Hi,

I am getting a 'Suitable Driver Not found' and a 'User Transaction not found' error, when I am trying to configure Shark as a JSP Client.

I have copied the connector jar in <%JBOSSHOME%>/../default/lib, and the sharkdb-ds.xml file to <%JBOSSHOME%>/../default/deploy folder. Am I missing anything???

Can somebody help me with the right values that I need to give in Shark.conf, for MySQL DataSource and UserTransaction.

Hi,

regarding 1st question, by default finished processes do not get deleted
from shark's DB (although you can configure shark to delete them on
completion as DS already explained...).
In Swing Admin application you can simply go to the Menu bar and from
the Misc menu select "Show finished processes".

regarding 2nd one, in professional version of Shark there is
implementation of Filter builders for reporting event audit API as well
as the persistence component for storing reporting data in a way to
easily query for any information. Using these one can easily get any
info for the running/finished processes/activities and users.

Hi Vojtech,

Concerning deletion of finished processes, it appears the outcome is in your
control. There is the property in the Shark.conf that seems to control what
happens to finished processes:

# Determines if finished processes which state is "closed.completed" should be
# automatically deleted from DB (DODS persistence manager default is false)
DODSPersistentManager.deleteFinishedProcesses=true

Now the second thing you mentioned. I totally see the value in the analysis you
are trying to make. There might be some API in the vast Shark interfaces for
that, which I am not aware of but architects of the engine may suggest. The
only way I see at the moment is to basically dig into Shark DB. You can get any
sort of information from there.

Dear Shark authors and users,

we have an engine running 24/7 with processes beeing started and finishing.
We want to analyze the processes - not only running processes but also the finished ones.

Once a process is completed, it is not displayed any longer in the admin console.

I have few questions and would like to know your feedback:

1.
A finished process - does it get deleted from Shark underlying database?

Did anyone had a need to display it like we do?
Does everybody like this behavior? - Finished process can not be viewed just like running processes - e.g. view variables, history, etc...

2.
Has anybody written any analytic component - e.g., which instances were the fastest. Which user/app is the bottleneck of a process.?
(even as small as a helpful SQL code against Shark db).
We are thinking of starting authoring such code. (and would like to collaborate/share/contribute)

3.
Many workflow suites offer a way of displaying a trace a process took through the process definition - e.g., high risk branch taken vs. low risk branch in 70% of finished instances.
Have any users of Shark written any code addressing this and had a similar need?

Svjetlana - thank you for your reply, it was a good confirmation that the solution should be a simple one! I retried the steps you suggested, and the running instance I had still did not work. Now, this made me think that when I was trying to fix the error, I may have messed up something else. I reinstalled JBoss and installed the new version of TWS. I went through the steps again, and this time it worked. I should have tried with a fresh install instead of mucking around as much as I did.

Set currentPkgIds = new HashSet(getRepositoryPersistenceManager().getExistingXPDLIds(shandle));

I'm not sure why the repository persistence manager (DODS by default, right?) wouldn't be getting created, unless there's additional configuration I need to do to point DODS at the MySQL instance. Could there possibly be something with transferring byte[] to MySQL and the version of MySQL being used?

Hi,

If I understood correctly, B and C stayed connected to D, and they both
got conditional check to E so if there was an error after executing B or
C, E is always triggered.
The problem is that process is not finished until all of its activities
are finished...and after e.g. activity B completed with an error...E was
executed and finished...activity C was still active and thus process
didn't finish. Even if you complete activity C afterwards (without
error)...it goes to D and process waits until there is another
transition (from B) merged to D...which will never happen...and process
will hang.

What you probably need is to terminate process if either activity B or C
goes with error check transition to E to terminate the process. This can
be implemented by tool agent in activity E which would terminate
activity B/C (or maybe even the whole process...but this one I'm not
sure how will it behave since you are "cutting the branch where you are
sitting at").

I should have searched first - the BuildInfo.java has moved from org.enhydra.shark.swingclient.BuildInfo to org.enhydra.shark.BuildInfo (a logical move!).

How can I get a Shark version number?

Dear Bert,

currently there is no way to get the version number through the shark library API call.

However, our Swing Admin application reads a property file (which is updated during our distribution process based on information we define in build.properties from the root of the source project) to find out what is the current Shark version. Take a look at BuildInfo class from the source code %SHARK_SRC_HOME%\modules\SharkSwingClient\src\org\enhydra\shark\swingclient\BuildInfo.java

Parallel activities, loops and process termination

Hello,

I have a small problem - my process splits and merges again. However while
split, due to some events, I need to stop/terminate/finish the process
prematurely. For example, here is connectivity matrix:
0 A B C D <- 'to' activity
A 0 1 1 0
B 0 0 0 1
C 0 0 0 1
D 0 0 0 0
(A->B,C->D), type of join at D is AND (B,C must be finished before D is
created).
So what I need to achive is that if B or C are completed with an error, the
process should be finished.
I tried to connect B and C to E, with conditional link and error check so that
E is connected to finish. However currently if error condition is triggered and
E is created and completed (E's performer is the system with auto start and
finish), the process for some reason is not terminated. Why? What do I do
wrong?

Hi,

actually, being user with username "admin" doesn't mean anything for
runTS (ManualTest example). It means for Swing client application
depending on configuration...when you specify the admin group, all the
users belonging to this group are able to see other users' worklists.
Even in that case, it is not recommended that user admin acts on a
behalf of another user in a sense to accept their workitems...
Anyway, being admin means nothing to the core engine but it can mean
something to the applications built on top of the engine.

runTS(ManualTest) logic is to instantiate processes and get the worklist
of user admin...so it will not see or execute workitems from other
users' worklists.

The implementation of the logic to be able to accept/complete activities
of the user if you belong to the same group is also out of the scope of
the core engine.
In some implementations we assign the activities to the groups. From the
core engines' point of view, a group is just another user/resource in
the system (and thus there is a worklist maintained by the shark for
this group resource). From the applications' point of view, when real
user logs in, the worklist for the user is retrieved by querying shark
for the worklists of all the groups this user belongs to, plus for the
worklist of himself.
When user accepts an activity, application calls shark's API to reassign
activity from the group to this user, when it rejects we reassign from
this user to the group...

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

Yes, that makes sense. One thing is that I am still logged in as admin so I'd
think I should be acting on behalf of any user, which seems not to be the case.
Appart from ability to create process instances, if even that, what can admin
do that a regular user doesn't?

And another only a user may accept and complete an action whereas I'd really
love to have an ability to be able to accomplish the same thing being a part of
user group that activity performer is assiciated with.

Hi,

I assume these are not automatic activities which are not being executed
but the manual ones, otherwise we have a big problem :-).
If you are executing runTS to test your new AssignmentManager, be aware
that it creates and executes a processes for user "admin".
In the case of Standard or XPDLStraight assignment manager, when you
create processes as admin user and when there are no participant
mappings when Standard assignment manager is used, all the assignments
will go to this "admin" user, and thus at the end of the test all the
processes will be finished.
If your assignment manager generates assignments for a user(s) different
than "admin" (at least for the manual activities at a beginning of the
process), the processes will never get finished since admin will not get
any assignments in his worklist.

Hello,

I have a problem with automatic modes. I have added my own assignment manager
(actually just getAssignments part for I don't quite understand how to use
UserGroupManager, which is unfortunte because it could have been extremely
helpful). Once I added it, Shark started behaving differently - none of
activities that have automatic start and finish modes are actually completed
automatically. I was under implression that regardless the assignment manager,
it should work as set however there is something that I don't see. I can't find
much in the docs either.

As a matter of fact, I have tried examples with runTS.bat on my Windows
machine. If I don't have my assignment manager set, everything works as
expected - activities are created and finished by the engine. However if I
uncomment the line in the config and use
XPDLStraightParticipantMappingAssignmentManager, no more automatic finishes -
the example stops after the first activity is created.

Could someone please explain what is going?

I'm trying to get through the Enhydra Shark QuickStart, but the Workflow Server Admin is crippling me with the "nag" screen that pops up every few minutes. How can I disable this "nag" screen so that I might be able to get through an example in the quickstart?

TaskApplication is something XPDL2.x specification defines. Shark still

Tool And TaskApplication

Hi,

When trying out Shark Engine and running some examples, we used some activities which did some work using tools.

Here initially we used "tool" tag to specify which tool to use. In this case, after completing execution of the tool, next activity was starting immediately.

Now newer version of XPDL says "tool" is deprecated and recommends to use "taskApplication".

When using this, after completion of the execution of tool, it is not moving to next activity, until we complete the work item manually ( the start and end mode of the activity is automatic).

Here the only change we made was to replace the <Tool... > with <TaskApplication....>.

Everything runs fine, except for the fact that we need to complete the activity manually.

Does anyone know about this issue, its cause and tried any solution for this ?

It is not really what I said. I said I can reassign activity using existing
assignment. However what you assign it to is just a simple string. It can
represent a user name, a user group, a table, a tree, an idea, whatever. It is
just a string. It is up to the consuming method how to interpret it. In my
case, I use a prefix to type-ify it, i.e. 'usergroup.' for user group, 'user.'
for user, followed by a numeric ID, i.g. 'usergroup.1' is a user group with ID
1, 'user.200' is a user with ID 200, 'table.120' is a table with ID 120, and so
on.

Assignment happens when an activity created. It returns a list of
assignees.
Once it is complete, there is no way to add new assignments to an activity
later. Therefore I really has to take care of my assignments in the manager.

However you may re-assign an activity. So what I do is, I assign activity to
a user group in the manager and then if necessary override that assignment
to a user or back to a group anywhere else. User or group name is just a
string that represents users and groups from external permission system. So
Shark is agnostic to that sort of data.
