I was just doing some more research about this behavior, and noticed a
lot of reports about this issue, many that don't mention firebug.  I
also noticed many mention gmail, and several of the posters here are
using gmail accounts.  I often leave gmail open all day long (it is
open when i experience the enter/tab key issue).  Anyone here not use
gmail?

Well, i guess that rules out the gmail theory.  The only addons we
have in common are the dom inspector and web developer...

thanks for the feedback!

I've disabled web developer toolbar for most of today and the problem
has yet to creep up since, despite it occurring several times in the
morning. I'm thinking this is the culprit, since most people who have
firebug installed also have web developer toolbar installed.

I have always thought this had something to do with flash, I seem to see it mostly after visiting flash heavy sites.

I don't have web developer installed and I still have the problem. In
fact, my tab and enter keys aren't working at this very moment... just
haven't yet restarted ffx. BTW, I recommend the "Session Fix"
extension for giving an option to remember the current session for
restart situations like this.  -- Doug

Unfortunately I just experienced this bug now with Web Developer
toolbar off so the search for the culprit is still on. Don't know if I
could live with disabling firebug for a day.

Interesting, I just found that shift-enter will works in some cases.
And, to help more with Johns last question, I am on FF3B4.

Ok here is a suggestion.

While the enter is working bring up Firebug on a page where you think
the problem could occur in future (eg form filling or maybe google's
interface to this group).

Inspect the page, find the textarea that you will be using. On Firebug
HTML panel, right click on the textarea, select LogEvents.

Enter some text, esp enter and tab keys, to see what happens.

Now go on and wait for the problem.

Now with the problem, repeat: Do you see enter and tab events or
not???

John.

The difference is the input event does not occur for tab and enter, while it does for every other key.

pressing 'a'
I also mentioned in my last email that shift-enter will submit form, but it also throws and error if logging is turned on.

panel is null console.js (line 44)

Hope this gives some sort of starting point. Having a quick look, the only reference I seem to find to input event is on line 1191 in dom.js

I have just had it happen again for the first time in a while. Same thing as last time, the input event is not firing. It appears to happen while switching tab, maybe something to do with CTRL-Tab event getting trapped.

Ok I looked into this information a bit. The FF "input" event should
only be raised for keys that change the input.  Tab usually moves to
the next control. Enter seems to depend, on INPUT elements I guess it
causes submit by default. For these cases, there would be no "input"
event.

Just to be clear, the difference I am looking for is between these two
cases:
 1) fresh FF+firebug, when enter/tab works, event stream on an INPUT
and TEXTAREA element when tab/enter/'a' are pressed.
 2) same but after the keys quite working.

No difference in the event streams?

John.

I've disabled Web Developer and the problem is still occurring.
However, Firebug does seem to break a bit less but Firefox still has
issues with Tab and Enter

A user has reported a repeatable test case for this!

There are two new comments on Issue 184 on the Firebug Google Code
site.

I tried the second test (http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?
id=184#c27) and it broke the tab and enter keys. Now that the problem
can be replicated, perhaps the fix will come quickly.

In the meantime, I'm going to try not to hit F5 when I'm editing css
properties.

Have not found any solution to issue then to restart FF.

I've written up an even more detailed test case and have replicated it
using Firefox 2 on Mac and portable versions of Firefox 2 and 3b5 on
XP Pro (inside vmware). All tests were using the current stable
version of firebug 1.05.

Test case steps at http://code.google.com/p/fbug/issues/detail?id=184#c29
