Examples of quality plans in architecture and planningDear list,
The city of Kiruna needs to be "moved" because of mining. Of course "move" means to a large degree "tear down" and "build new", with the exception of listed buildings, some of which will actually be "moved". The mining company LKAB will be the owner/builder of lots of housing and other buildings, whole ares as well as individual buildings. In their effort to make sure this results in an attractive city and good living conditions they have decided to produce a sort of "quality plan" for their building projects. The point is not to present a list of "acceptable" buildings or designs, but rather to describe the process that will ensure that each project will be great in itself and contribute to great whole. The "quality plan" needs to live and develop over at least two decades. As they have asked me to lead the work with this quality plan, I am looking for examples of such. We are aware of a number of "master plans", for instances from New Urbanist projects, but these often presents the results and shows designs of acceptable buildings. We are looking for examples that present more a process, to ensure architectural freedom, creativity and variation. We are also familiar with the works of Christopher Alexander. A key element in our work is that building concepts should draw from unique or distinct lifestyles and citizen ideals as well as from the unique characters of each place. As a majority of the city will be built within a relatively short timespan a key issue is how to create/generate variation and not be stuck in any single "contemporary period". Thank you for any suggestions of examples! Lars ......................................................................... LARS ALBINSSON +46 (0) 70 592 70 45 LARS.ALBINSSON@... Re: Examples of quality plans in architecture and planningDear Lars,
You might take a look at the Christchurch draft Central City Plan, part of the process for rebuilding after the recent earthquake, which left half the buildings in the central city needing to be demolished. http://www1.ccc.govt.nz/council/proceedings/2011/august/cnclcover11th/13.At tachment1Volume1.pdf Best Amanda Dr Amanda Bill Institute of Design for Industry and Environment College of Creative Arts Massey University, Wellington New Zealand +64 4 8015799 ex 62555 email: A.E.Bill@... RES: Examples of quality plans in architecture and planningDear Lars
In 2010, we had here in Rio, events about Master Plans, in order to get information to discuss the changes of the city for the World Football Cup and The Olympic Games to be held in this city. In one of this events, Prof. Vittorio Magnano Lampugnani presented the project and realization of The Novartis Campus, in Suisse. I was interested in the process, because he told us that the working team was transdisciplinar. So I bought the book that describes all the process. Although it is not a city, it involves a lot of the criteria we can establish in a city plan. The book is out of print, but it might be found in second-hand book portals. Take a look at http://www.hatjecantz.de/controller.php?cmd=detail&titzif=00002054&lang=en Hope it will help. I would look into the use of protocols. It has worked to reduce complexity while maintaining outcomes in a number of areas from government to business.
