A few years ago I arranged a stand-alone Exim conference, which ran just
prior to a UKUUG conference. I've joined the UKUUG council, and the
UKUUG would like the Exim community to join in our Summer Technical
Conference. This makes running an Exim event very easy: we have the
venue booked and all the arrangements made: we just have to decide on
the number of meeting rooms needed.

Possible Exim-related ideas
----------------------------
- an Exim developers summit. We can provide a dedicated meeting room.
- a separate "mini-conf" running alongside the UKUUG conference.
- an Exim track within the main conference.
- a "Getting started with Exim" tutorial for newbies
- large-scale mail system administration

If you want to get involved, or just bounce ideas around, please give me
a shout.
(I've already heard that the maintainers list are interested, at least
to the extent of considering what might be possible. And we've had a
couple of offers of Exim-related papers already.)

Exim v4.69 release

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Exim release 4.69 is now available from the primary ftp site:

    ftp://ftp.exim.org/pub/exim/exim4/exim-4.69.tar.gz
    ftp://ftp.exim.org/pub/exim/exim4/exim-4.69.tar.bz2

The release has actually been available since 20 Dec 2007, however
logistical problems prevented a formal announcement until now. The
released files and their signatures have not changed since the initial
distribution.

========================================================================

This release is a pure bug fix release (although there is also
preliminary DKIM support available if compiled with appropriate flags).
The documentation has been updated and regenerated.

The major change is an update to the embedded PCRE library in response
to security issues discovered within that library. We believe that these
security issues will be extremely difficult to exploit. Most (if not
all) distributions shipping exim already use their system PCRE library
rather than the Exim embedded version and so will be immune to these
issues (as long as their system libraries have been updated), and with
the next Exim release we intend to drop the embedded library forcing
everyone to use a system or their own maintained PCRE library.

As usual, all changes are in the doc/ChangeLog file.

========================================================================

The primary ftp server is in Cambridge, England. There is a list of
mirrors in:

    http://www.exim.org/mirmon/ftp_mirrors.html

The master ftp server is now ftp.exim.org although ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk
also carries the same files for backward compatibility.

The distribution files are signed with Nigel Metheringham's GPG key
(address is nigel@..., key id is DDC03262), which is available on
the ftp site and on a number of keyservers. The ASCII signature files
are in the same directory as the tarbundles. The MD5 hash codes for the
distribution files are:

    56e8db1dfe31e0ee4cef85e8940ceedc exim-4.69.tar.gz
    6f29f073328c858d8554b08cc0c3c2be exim-4.69.tar.bz2

The distribution contains an ASCII copy of the 4.69 manual and other
documents. Other formats of the documentation are also available:

    ftp://ftp.exim.org/pub/exim/exim4/exim-html-4.69.tar.gz
    ftp://ftp.exim.org/pub/exim/exim4/exim-pdf-4.69.tar.gz
    ftp://ftp.exim.org/pub/exim/exim4/exim-postscript-4.69.tar.gz
    ftp://ftp.exim.org/pub/exim/exim4/exim-texinfo-4.69.tar.gz

The .bz2 versions of these tarbundles are also available.

The Exim Conference as planned isn't viable.
Should we organize an "Exim Development / Futures" meeting instead?

(The meeting could also include a morning of short talks, rather than
full papers, so people can find out what others in the Exim community
are doing.)

We had planned the "E-Mail Systems Conference (Exim and other mail
systems)" for April 2008, in Birmingham, UK. However, there's very
little interest: 20 people say they might attend; 3-4 people offered
talks. With these numbers, a full conference isn't viable.

On 5-Dec-2007, David Restall posted to the Exim Users list, regarding
"The next Exim release - will there be one ?" That thread indicated
that people *do* want an assured future for Exim, but it wasn't very
clear how things would move forward. So a meeting -- for developers,
and interested users -- is a good idea.

For a one day meeting the costs are about UK Pounds 100.00 per person
(+VAT), including tea, coffee, and lunch, but not including
accommodation. If a lot of people are interested, the costs will be

Exim 4.68 Released

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

I have just put Exim release 4.68 on the primary ftp site:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.68.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.68.tar.bz2

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This release contains a number of new features, as well as some bug fixes. The
documentation has been updated. The PostScript/PDF documentation has again been
made by a new process. Instead of using xmlto/fop (as was done up to 4.66),
PostScript is generated directly from the XML by a program called SDoP that I
have been quietly writing for the last couple of years. It is now publicly
released, and it can do a better (and 60 times faster) job on the Exim manual
than xmlto/fop. In particular, change bars are back, as are font changes in the
indexes, and there are fewer typographic inelegancies.

As usual, all changes are in the doc/ChangeLog file. See also the
README.UPDATING file for changes that might impact on some installations.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The primary ftp server is in Cambridge, England. There is a list of mirrors in:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/Mirrors

The distribution files are signed with Philip Hazel's GPG key, which is
available on the ftp site and on a number of keyservers. The signature files
are in the same directory as the tarbundles. The MD5 hash codes for the
distribution files are:

41e9a5f5937f50d3cf5ba62986b06602 exim-4.68.tar.gz
f9c729295ec61e279a76856ef332492f exim-4.68.tar.bz2

The distribution contains an ASCII copy of the 4.68 manual and other documents.
Other formats of the documentation are also available:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-html-4.68.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-pdf-4.68.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-postscript-4.68.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-texinfo-4.68.tar.gz

The .bz2 versions of these tarbundles are also available.

The ChangeLog for this, and several previous releases, is included in the
distribution. Individual change log files are also available on the ftp site,
the current one being:

ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/ChangeLog-4.68
ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/ChangeLog-4.68.gz

Brief documentation for new features is available in the NewStuff file in the
distribution. Individual NewStuff files are also available on the ftp site, the
current one being:

ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/NewStuff-4.68
ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/NewStuff-4.68.gz

The Exim Test Suite is available for use on other hosts:

ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/Testing/exim-testsuite-4.68.tar.bz2

Subject: Exim conference 2008 -- Preliminary Announcement and Call for Papers

A few months back, an Exim / e-mail conference was proposed.
but it didn't go ahead because not enough people were interested.

At the recent Exim course given by Philip Hazel in Cambridge we asked
again, and there's been a lot more interest (partly because timing is
better, partly because Philip's course won't be run anymore) so the
Conference will go ahead now in 2008.

        Regards,
        Niall

ps: apologies to those who receive both postings

---

                E-Mail Systems Conference 2008
                        (Exim and other mail systems)
Preliminary Announcement and Call for Papers
                        Thu/Fri 3/4-Apr-2008
                        Birmingham, England

Related conference:

This conference is being run with the cooperation of the UKUUG
-- the UK's Unix and Open Systems User Group. The UKUUG
conference takes place immediately before the E-Mail Systems
conference, on Tue/Wed 1/2 April 2008, at the same venue. The
themes of the UKUUG conference are Virtualization and Dynamic
        Languages.

Purpose of Conference:

The aim of the conference is to provide:

        * A forum to discuss practical experiences using Exim
and other e-mail systems, for a wide range of users, from ISPs
          to tiny sites.

        * Tutorials for various levels of expertise.

        * A venue for the community, for informal networking and
          meeting socially.

        * A focus for the Exim developers, especially now that Philip
Hazel, the creator and lead developer is retiring. We will
provide meeting facilities for all those interested in
getting involved in maintaining and developing Exim.

The last conference (2005), was solely about Exim. This time
we have broadened the theme because many topics -- issues with
very large mail systems, spam filtering, resilience of mail
systems, mail server clustering, mail performance, running
message stores, techniques, etc. -- are common to all, and we
want as broad a community as possible to participate.

Call for papers, tutorials, BOF topics

        Papers:
Send abstracts of about 200 words, along with a short
biographical note, to exim08-speakers (at) uit.co.uk. Talks
should last 30-60 minutes, including Q&A.

        Tutorials:
If you would like to present a tutorial, send an abstract as
          above.

        Suggestions:
If you don't want to speak, but there is a topic you're
particularly interested in, or a speaker you think would be
good for the conference, or a tutorial you'd like to attend,
do let us know on the above e-mail address.

All the services on exim.org have now been moved from
sesame.csx.cam.ac.uk to tahini.csx.cam.ac.uk

Things *should* now be working OK - if there are problems then please
drop me a note.

Also things have moved, although in most cases the old URLs should still
work:-
   Mailing lists http://lists.exim.org/
   Bug reporting http://bugs.exim.org/
   Source repo http://vcs.exim.org/
   Wiki http://wiki.exim.org/

All the mailing list archives (back to 1996) have been converted into
lurker, which should be easier to use to find things. Message URLs
within lurker are stable so can be quoted in emails, wiki pages etc.

Unfortunately the old mail archives are not going to be made available
long term. I will try and rewrite all the email URLs on the web site and
the wiki, but references within old emails etc will break.

If you had an account on sesame you will have an account on tahini -
please make sure .forward files etc are moved (your .ssh access has been
carried over). All source checkins must now be against the new server.

Many thanks for Magnus, Philip and Tony for work they have done on this

Many of the services have moved already (ftp, rsync, bugzilla and wiki
including the DNS changes to MXes and for www.exim.org and exim.org.

Those of you that whitelist particular machines for mailing list

The next (and final) Exim course that I'll be running in Cambridge (UK)
is fast approaching. It is taking place at Robinson College and the
dates are 24-27 July 2007 (lunchtime to lunchtime). This is probably
your last chance to hear my Words of Wisdom before I retire. For full
details, please see:
July 4, so if you were thinking of coming, now is the time to do
something about it! Beginners and not-so-beginners are all welcome.

As this is my last ever course, the special dinner on Thursday, July 26
is going to be something of a farewell occasion, and anybody who wants
to come to it (even if not attending the course) is welcome. The web
page above has special booking instructions for people who just want to
attend this dinner.

Roll up! Roll up! Book your places now! As well as listening me tell you
all about Exim, the course is a good social occasion, and the most
frequent complaint we have had in the past is that we feed people too
well. Several people have come more than once, in order to interact with
some of the Exim community.

Exim 4.67 released

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

I have just put Exim release 4.67 on the primary ftp site:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.67.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.67.tar.bz2

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This release contains a number of new features, as well as some bug fixes. The
documentation has been updated. The PostScript/PDF documentation has been made
by a new process. Instead of using xmlto/fop, PostScript is generated directly
from the XML by a program called SDoP that I have been quietly writing for the
last couple of years. It isn't ready for public release yet, but it can do a
better (and 60 times faster) job on the Exim manual than xmlto/fop. In
particular, change bars are back, as are font changes in the indexes, and there
are fewer typographic inelegancies.

As usual, all changes are in the doc/ChangeLog file. See also the
README.UPDATING file for changes that might impact on some installations.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The primary ftp server is in Cambridge, England. There is a list of mirrors in:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/Mirrors

The distribution files are signed with Philip Hazel's GPG key, which is
available on the ftp site and on a number of keyservers. The signature files
are in the same directory as the tarbundles. The MD5 hash codes for the
distribution files are:

ad624f56305e3a35bddd15cef8027576 exim-4.67.tar.gz
9ee83186d9ac99e5ff297112aa6fddf0 exim-4.67.tar.bz2

The distribution contains an ASCII copy of the 4.67 manual and other documents.
Other formats of the documentation are also available:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-html-4.67.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-pdf-4.67.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-postscript-4.67.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-texinfo-4.67.tar.gz

The .bz2 versions of these tarbundles are also available.

The ChangeLog for this, and several previous releases, is included in the
distribution. Individual change log files are also available on the ftp site,
the current one being:

ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/ChangeLog-4.67
ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/ChangeLog-4.67.gz

Brief documentation for new features is available in the NewStuff file in the
distribution. Individual NewStuff files are also available on the ftp site, the
current one being:

ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/NewStuff-4.67
ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/ChangeLogs/NewStuff-4.67.gz

The Exim Test Suite is available for use on other hosts:
Preliminary Announcement and Call for Papers

Purpose of Conference:

         * Provide a forum to discuss practical experiences using Exim
and other e-mail systems, for a wide range of users, from ISPs
           to tiny sites.

The last conference was solely about Exim. This time we have
broadened the theme because many topics -- issues with very
as broad a community as possible to participate.

         Suggestions:

Folks,

There's yet another list - exim-future - see
      http://www.exim.org/mailman/listinfo/exim-future

This list is intended for discussions of future development methodology
and features aimed at Exim5 onwards - ie anything that involves
architectural changes. There are additionally some wiki pages recording
ideas as they get fleshed out (which may involve several alternatives).

There is also an email-based interface for users (not administrators)
of the list; you can get info about using it by sending a message
with just the word `help' as subject or in the body, to:

      exim-future-request@...

Remember it may be worth leaving discussion until after the weekend,
to allow a few people to have arrived to hear your pearls of wisdom.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

I have just put Exim release 4.66 on the primary ftp site:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.66.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.66.tar.bz2

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This release fixes two major bugs (related to the bug fixed in 4.65, but not
noticed in time). The documentation has been updated for this release, but I
have left in all the change marks since the 4.63 documentation because 4.64 and
4.65 have proved so short-lived.

As usual, all changes are in the doc/ChangeLog file. See also the
README.UPDATING file for changes that might impact on some installations.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The primary ftp server is in Cambridge, England. There is a list of mirrors in:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/Mirrors

The distribution files are signed with Philip Hazel's GPG key, which is
available on the ftp site and on a number of keyservers. The signature files
are in the same directory as the tarbundles. The MD5 hash codes for the
distribution files are:

e25102dbd8f3ec94f7f8c53bf47a63d2 exim-4.66.tar.gz
01288e44919d8abdde5a7bd2c200449b exim-4.66.tar.bz2

The distribution contains an ASCII copy of the 4.66 manual and other documents.
Other formats of the documentation are also available:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-html-4.66.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-pdf-4.66.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-postscript-4.66.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-texinfo-4.66.tar.gz

The .bz2 versions of these tarbundles are also available.

The HTML documentation contains the FAQ and configuration samples. These are
also available separately in HTML or txt format from the ftp site:

ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/FAQ-html.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/FAQ.txt.gz

The Exim mailing lists were not working until earlier today (UK time).
This appears to have been a result of their host not coming back
properly after we had a power incident on Tuesday October 3rd, described
by my colleague thus:

An electrician managed to drill through a cable which took out power
to 5 racks full of kit in the Computing Service machine room at 09:18.

The electrical work was to install additional power distribution.
Rather amusingly part of the motivation behind this is to rearrange
supplies so that it is harder to take out 5 racks full of kit with a
  single drill.

We believe that the mailing lists are back on track now. Sorry for the
outage. However, I'm afraid that isn't the end of it:

On Sunday October 9th, from approx 09:00 to 15:00 UK time, there is a
scheduled power outage in our machine room. This is the end of a long
saga involving a backup generator that died under test and could not
trivially be mended, a replacement generator that took some time to
arrive (including entertainment with a small archway and a large truck),
and I think some other related disasters (I've kept away from most of
the details). Hopefully after this work is done we will be back to a
situation where we have reliable backups for power outages. That is why
this work is being done now - at our busiest time of year (term having
just started) - because it's a sort of emergency.

Anyway, it does mean that the Exim mailing lists and exim.org will be
down for the duration of the power outage. We'll be checking that the
mailing lists come back afterwards.

I have just put Exim release 4.62 on the primary ftp site:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.62.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.62.tar.bz2

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This release is happening mainly to fix some bugs. There are in addition a
couple of small functional extensions. The manual has been brought up-to-date
with all the changes since 4.61.

As usual, all changes are in the doc/ChangeLog file. See also the
README.UPDATING file for changes that might impact on some installations.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The primary ftp server is in Cambridge, England. There is a list of mirrors in:

Preliminary Announcement:

We will be running another Exim course this year, on 18-21 July 2006, in
Robinson College, Cambridge, UK. Please note however that some details
are yet to be finalised, in particular the programme and costs. (The web
pages have been minimally hacked but still give last year's prices.)
I'll post another announcement when we have further information and are
open for bookings.

Re-release of Exim 4.60 documentation

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

I have just re-released the Exim 4.60 documentation. There were a number of
problems with the previous version, caused by a change to the way it was
produced. I have now converted the master to source to a simpler form, and also
improved the appearance of some of the output renditions.

I have replaced the Exim 4.60 source tarball with a new one, in which the only
file that has changed is doc/spec.txt. This is on the primary ftp site:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.60.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-4.60.tar.bz2

The distribution files are signed with Philip Hazel's GPG key, which is
available on the ftp site and on a number of keyservers. The signature files
are in the same directory as the tarbundles. The MD5 hash codes for the
distribution files are:

583be34bf0ca2d6bda9f6dea4823c574 exim-4.60.tar.gz
94e69f246da40cbd43516e721d2745c7 exim-4.60.tar.bz2

The other document format files have been updated in these tarballs:

  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-html-4.60.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-pdf-4.60.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-postscript-4.60.tar.gz
  ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/email/exim/exim4/exim-texinfo-4.60.tar.gz

The .bz2 versions of these tarbundles are also available.

Although all the files are still called *4.60*, the documentation identifies
itself as revision 4.60-1. Hopefully, there won't need to be a -2 release.
