All:

I talked to the Troopmaster people.  They said that by the end of
this year, they will be rolling out a new version of TM.  It sits on
their server and it can be accessed via a web browser and name/
password much like you access your bank account or paying bills.
This way, we would be working with one version updated by many.  No
uploading data, downloading updates and patches, inaccessible from Mac.

We should look into this.  I can't wait!

Whoa There Big Fella'!

Before we all get our scouts marching down the virtual trail, let's ask our
selves and TSI, some questions.

(And I don't suspect anyone knows the answers, yet, but they need to be
asked!)

1)       Will we be able to use TM on the web for free until our current TM
on the PC license runs out?

2)       What happens to those that don't want to use TM on the web and want
to stay with TM on the PC?

3)       How do we take TM on the web into the field? Download the data to
TM on the PC?

4)       Will TM on the PC be compatible with TM on the web?

5)       Will TM on the web be available for purchase by those Units that
have their own server or will it be TSI only?

Being a software and database designer, I can think of many more questions
to ask, but these are some of the first that come to mind considering the
investment we have all made in TM on the PC, not only in money, but in time,
patience and procedures.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of a central repository for data, no
satellite copies, single point of update, all the niceties of a server based
application, but I would personally like to know more about their plans now
so that we have a chance to help in the direction the product takes. After
all, we're the users not them. They need to make it appeal to us if they
want us to buy it.

Just my plugged nickel, for what it's worth.

And don't forget:
What sort of financial/personal family info might be part of your records that will now be stored online.

For me it would not matter- I do not keep their personal info or parents personal info in TM, only just barely enough info to keep what their balance with the troop.

But, as a matter of principle, I will probably stop using TM if the records are stored on a server somewhere else.

Don,

The attachment won't come directly through here. I tried opening it even through the e-mailed post in my regular e-mail.

I believe that attachments have to go directly to the Files section of the group, or you have to send them directly to Ken Payne, Jr., the Moderator/Co-Owner of the group as Mark Landry has pretty much given him total control of that feature.

I’m sure they will continue to sell and support the standalone version. I see this as a natural evolution of the DotNet product.

I'm sure all will be revealed.  For now, until TM comes out with an official
announcement, all is conjecture at this point.

Sure, there's questions to be answered, but I for one am glad that they are
looking to evolve the product, if in fact that's what they are doing.

Ken,

Not sure what the problem is with your system, but I clicked on the link Don
supplied and was, after a few seconds wait, presented with a file download
box to "open, save or cancel" the download of the trgcodes.pdf file.

Don,

The attachment won't come directly through here. I tried opening it even
through the e-mailed post in my regular e-mail.

I believe that attachments have to go directly to the Files section of the
group, or you have to send them directly to Ken Payne, Jr., the
Moderator/Co-Owner of the group as Mark Landry has pretty much given him
total control of that feature.

Chuck, BrianK & all,
You make three good points
1) Are we going to have a chance to give input to design of new product? - I
would take that up with TSI. Being in the software industry, it is easier to
build something and put it out there for people to poke holes in it then to
start with too many people's opinions... AKA  "Designed by committee"
syndrome :-)  I trust TSI to have a small groups of people who are giving
input. Maybe you can ask them.

2) Pricing and transition - I think from their history they tend to 'do the
right thing' and let us use older products till we are ready to transition.
Keep in mind that they are a small group and supporting too many versions
means their costs go up - hence ours!  So be careful for what you ask for.
I have been with TSI from the very beginning and gone through Packmaster and
Troopmaster versions and never was concerned that they were trying to force
upgrades on us just to make another Buck!.. A scout is Trustworthy!  Now it
us Users to "Be Loyal, Friendly and helpful"

3) Security of data on internet
I would expect TSI to build the same level of data security and privacy we
are now accustomed to when using Banking sites or other secure sites.
Remember that when you are using Troopmaster DotNet. Your data is encrypted
and stored in files on the internet  (just accessible under secure FTP as
opposed to secure HTTPS). So if you are concerned with security about you
data. Don't be. I will trust that if they want us to use the product,
security and privacy will be built into the product features as is in DOT
Net, and hopefully, more and better as building a server based web
application actually offers better centralized controls and audit capability
while addressing issues we all have read about just this week about
concurrent access and update etc..
So, this is all good. I will add this... "Trust, but Verify"... so I also
eagerly await TSI's announcements so we can have a say in reviewing and
gaining trust that this is a step in the right direction, without collective
voice being heard.

And don't forget:
What sort of financial/personal family info might be part of your records
that will now be stored online.

For me it would not matter- I do not keep their personal info or parents
personal info in TM, only just barely enough info to keep what their balance
with the troop.

But, as a matter of principle, I will probably stop using TM if the records
are stored on a server somewhere else.

FYI, Seems your machine may be different, that attachment came through and
Adobe p[op up had "Corrupt, cannot open .." Message also.  Even with a rt
click save-as and open from the desk top.  Seems like it should work but
maybe Bill Gates is clamping down.  What is your system? I am running XpPro
SP3 with IE 8.0 and MS Office Enterprise with Outlook 2007.

Yes when I got to the end of the "new quiz" and printed out the card it is
the old YPT one. It gets very frustrating when National is continually
renaming these courses. Pete

Greg,

That was the same error message I got with the first link that was sent, and I'm using Vista with SP3 I believe, IE7. Have Adobe Reader version 9.1.3 installed.

I don't think the YPT Quiz is supposed to have a CODE perse' as I understand it.

It is typically there and meant to test our knowledge before proceding to attempting to complete the actual Online Training Course which in turn would need a code.

Why would we need a code for a quiz? I don't want credit for the quiz, I want credit for the Training...so the other is just in my honest opinion a refresher quiz...no need for a code.
