Hello,

Any chance we could get Facebook URL types added for Artist Discography
pages and Releases?

For example:
http://www.facebook.com/discography/?id=110292097521
http://www.facebook.com/discography/album.php?aid=108604150302

Anyone else interested in these?

Sounds good to me.  I'd also like to see Twitter added as an artist AR
as many artists now have an active Twitter account (e.g. Lily Allen).

Yeah, I think these would be a great additions too. In the case of
Twitter, it's pretty common for labels -especially the smaller indies-
to have an active account.

Agreed.  I've also been seeing plenty of these two for labels; any objections to Labels also getting Facebook and Twitter ARs?

I'd rather see the Twitter AR referred to as "has a microblogging
website at URL" or something. Twitter isn't the only platform, and
while I doubt there are any big artists using identi.ca and other
services, that's not to say they won't in the future.

The Facebook one probably warrants its own AR, or we merge the MySpace
and Facebook ones into "online social profile" or something.

Good point.

Sounds good for consistency, though maybe 'has a social networking
profile' reads a little better (if it's a URL, it's pretty likely it's
online).

For the full set, 'has a YouTube channel at' should probably be 'has a
video channel at' or something similar.  There are a lot of other
YouTube-esque sites now.

Do we want to go that generic though?  I seem to recall a similar proposal I made a year or so ago, to expand "has Wikipedia page at" to allow wikis outside of Wikipedia, failed.

It's a little difficult to respond to that, because I'm neither
suggesting we should change the Wikipedia links (I don't think we
should) and nor do you give any details as to why the vote failed.  So
effectively, it reads as 'Should you try and change things?  Votes can
fail, you know'.

I think the case of databases (Discogs, Wikipedia) are different from
links to artist resources.  Links to things like Myspace, Facebook,
Twitter, etc. are just that: links.  They are there for the user to
take a look if they are interested.  Making the categories for these
general means MB isn't implicitly supporting certain sites (currently
Myspace and YouTube) over others.  On the other hand, I would expect
databases to be a bit more about confidence in the data they store and
also possibly be used to automatically retrieve further data (does the
BBC not use the Wikipedia link for this?).  Both Discogs and Wikipedia
can be trawled automatically, but if we generalised those links,
things would break.  On the contrary, I don't think there are any
plans to read in data from a Myspace page that would prevent it being
generalised to 'social networking profile' and thus allow the
inclusion of Facebook, Bebo, and whatever else.

Anyway, I'm guessing the next step is to take this to mb-style?  Or is
there a more appropriate forum?

Yes, an RFC on mb-style please.

In case you are not familiar with the process, it is documented at:

http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/StyleCouncil#How_the_Style_Council_Works

I have recently posted a slightly more detailed instruction to
mb-style, you can find that here:

Maybe I am being too generic, but how about has an online
presence/resource at(or something similar) as an all encompassing term
would be more appropriate as it would cover
microblogging/blogs/facebook/myspace/bebo/official website etc without
getting to bogged down in selecting the right AR?

i agree. the vote should stop inappropriate things beings added. the
system should be able to automatically organise/sub-categorise URLs by
looking at the domain. far too much discussion time is taken up by
adding website x, y, z IMO - they are mostly all valid, but we will
never get a complete list the way we are doing it.
