Fact(s) of the day...or not

I didn't bother to 'Snopes' this or vet it...we needed CHANGE.

HOW BIG IS WAL-MART??

1 . At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.

2 . This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer. And most can't speak English.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are SuperCenters; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11. This year , 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.)

12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart

13. Let Wal Mart bail out Wall Street.

Elle,

I couldn't figure out from your post.  Are you for or against walmart or
just posting this because you think it is incredible.

By the way, if the numbers are correct, they are operating on a profit
margin of slightly below 3.5 percent.  Pretty low, isn't it?

Herb,

The book "The WalMart Effect" is still on my night stand, I recently
read it but will go through it again briefly at bedtime and check the
"facts".  The "most don't speak English" is certainly hyperbole.  The
book takes a balanced look at WalMart, and love them or hate them,
they've been a good deal overall for the American consumer (and
Mexican, Chinese, Canadian, etc.). No one is forced to shop there and
like Lowes, Home Depot, and other "big box" stores, they can't be all
things to all people.  I'm in the market for vent-free gas logs for my
fireplace and ended-up choosing a small vendor at twice the price of
the "big box" stores.  Viva la free market!

I don't think Wal-Mart would do it. They didn't become successful by
wasting money.

Hank,

I don't like or dislike WM...although by having them 25 miles away I don't have to go 80 for 75% of the shopping I have to do...(in town we have a gas station, a grocery, which I support as much as I can...and a Buy-Rite...which has one of every closeout known to man. Shopper's Paradise!)

I just thought the WM bit was thought -provoking...a bit of change from the "mine is bigger' that is proliferation here for the time being.

3.5% is not too bad ...DC area grocery stores  are squeezed at both ends...I thought I read that Giant /Safeway work under 1%...a really low margin...Ukrops & Wegmans (more independents) have slightly higher returns. But I don't know for sure & for sure I don't care....;^)

elle

Never consider that I will take life seriously again.
