Hi everyone-

I was hoping for some input on an American Pipit here on the Farallon Islands a few days ago.I Initially identified it as a japonicus, based on the extremely well-marked underparts and the face pattern (especially the bold, white throat wrapping around behind the auriculars); but the legs are dark, and a few things aren't quite along the lines of any American-type i've seen: namely the complete lack of a dark malar, and the very broad, smudgy streaks on the underparts. Has anyone seen an American Pipit of either type that was this well-marked on the underparts, or that lacked a malar stripe like this? What do you think of the subspecific ID?

Greetings

The lack of malar streaking is something I've not noted in a well-marked American Pipit (that is, one that has relatively heavy streaking below) and strikes me as very odd.

As for the back streaking, this is well within range of the American Pipits passing through Washington now.
