Farcry Help Section and Plugins

Farcry Help Section
One idea we started to use in V4 was a help icon taking the user to a
global help section, this in V5 could be a section of daemon's site or
the developers server (ideally for customised work).
If this was set-up for contribution, all of us could add to this. Some
of the posts on this and other groups would be great to have amended
and added to the help section.
=====

Plugin
I have only seen free plugins this is great but feel a lot of people
(including Daemon) do not have the time or money to spend thousands on
a project to give away. I realise this is what Daemon  has been doing
and we all really appreciate this. I am sure a lot of people have
developed some cool stuff but have had to keep it to maintain a market
edge, allowing a market place to recoup the development costs would
only help move things long?

Several Plugins are available here:
http://docs.farcrycms.org/display/FCPLUG

(note anyone can contribute to this -- the WIKI is open; you just need
to register)

And we're working on a plugin directory to work with the "to be
developed" plugin explorer.

It's hard to make a truly generic plugin.  It's not so much not
wanting to share but it not being easy enough to share i suspect.  In
amongst all the other things we have going on, we're working on making
it easier for folks to share their code.

Hi Geoff
Sorry I possibly didn't make my self very clear
The help side I was referring to was a linked help for end users. Just thought it might be an idea to help users.

Plugins
I feel it just limits farcry if it is not possible for you/investor or developer to sell a plugin.
Once development of a plugin gets into the tens of thousands a company needs to have a multi million turnover to be able to contemplate offering there months and months of work for free.

I earn my main living from property development and possibility have different business ideals. Sorry if I am suggesting the wrong things I am just finding it hard to find a way to heavily invest in farcry development.

Many Thanks Mike

Mike,

And if that works for you that's great.  Being an open source product
(FarCry), many of us make our money from services (developing software
for our clients) and support and release our software development for
free to the community (until someone truly uses open source quite a
bit, most people don't "get it").

So, I (like many others) have clients who pay to have new features
developed.  Once completed, if I find it useful enough to the rest of
the world, I release that software (maybe as a plugin) back to the
community.  The client understands that they've saved quite a lot of
money not having the purchase the original product and any plugins
they get for free, and in return anything they have me develop (if
useful) is given back to the community.  This is what makes open
source software so appealing and popular.  It's a win/win for everyone
involved (Companies like MSFT still haven't gotten that, and yet they
are trying now to get into the OS world... but not for the right
reasons.  They just don't "get it").

Still, there is no reason people can't make sellable FarCry plugins as
products.  If the plugin is enticing enough to purchase.  ie. Lets say
it's an e-commerce plugin.  Let's say "Company-X" spends 6 months
developing it with no ROI yet, but plan to sell the product.  Sure,
that works.  Who knows, maybe someday I will sell a product, but for
the foreseeable future I plan to continue releasing my code and
plugins for free so that people like yourself can use them (if found
useful) for free.  And I'll continue to hope that in return people
will release their code back to the community so that I can benefit
just the same (one can hope).

Thanks for the detailed explanation and I am trying appreciate the
concept, when its just a few days work or a client has picked up the
tab its fine. Just once a project is many many months of work and tens
of thousands, self funded its a little harder. Possibly some middle
ground will ponder.
Thanks
Mike
