Hi All,
We are trying to add additional feature in our project which involves file transfer between two machines. Currently the transfer is between a remote ftp server machine to a local system and vice versa using a client application installed locally.

Now we are analyzing the feasibility to initiate file transfer between two remote ftp server machines without routing the file through a client connection. We have identified FXP (File eXchange Protocol) to be utilized to achieve the functionality.Is there any alternate approach to achieve the functionality rather than using FXP. FXP has a known vulnerability on exploiting ftp server termed FTP bounce.
We have the ftp service hosted on Unix machine.

I want to know some more details about FXP
1. Are there any jars available with the implementation of FXP?
2. Can we transfer multiple files in a unit of work using FXP ( transfer many files in a single transaction )?
3. Can we have Checksum matching, Checkpoint, Auditlog and Resume functionalities in FXP?
4. Can we implement security features like 128 bit encryption/ 256 bit encryption etc in FXP?
5. Is there any solution to overcome the security threat posed by PORT/ PASV commands?

Your points and directions in using FXP or an alternate approach is very much appreciated. Will JXTA or SCP will serve our purpose?

Hi,

I'm looking for a solution where I can control an FTP client with a remote web interface, just like the uTorrent WebUI feature.

I have a server at home, on which I would like to have an FTP client installed in order to download large files. However, I'd like to control the transfers from other computers on the network but not necessarily have these "control computers" online during the entire file transfer. This is because the files are so big that it will take > 24 hours to transfer them and the server is the only computer that's online 24/7.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

i am using jetty as an embedded server where i add contexts (or Handlers) to jetty server for different web applications or servlets.
when i stop the jetty server with some Http connections still remaining by the Http Clients and restart it immediately without any delay, it start getting 404 errors once i try hitting the URIs.
earlier i thought, it could be due to war files not getting properly exploded, but that is not the case.

it seems if there is small delay between start and stop, jetty corrupts the contexts and hence the error.
also to observe is the case, where new URIs added are not reflected in the restarted server.

slow processing by jetty server (6.x) once servlet has done processing

hi all,
there is a performace issue i'm facing in jatty 6.x.
once my servlets doXXX() method is complete, it takes jetty near about 40-50 msec to finish the job.
the reason i figured out is due to the processing logic written in HttpConnection.handle() method.

below is the code part which i believe is the performance bottleneck.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
while (_generator.isCommitted() && !_generator.isComplete())
                    {
long written=_generator.flush();
io+=written;
if (written<=0)
break;
else if (_endp.isBufferingOutput())
_endp.flush();
}
// Flush buffers
if (_endp.isBufferingOutput())
                    {
_endp.flush();
if (!_endp.isBufferingOutput())
no_progress=0;
}
  if (io>0)
no_progress=0;
else if (no_progress++>=2)
return;
                }
}
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

here i'm looping 2 times extra even if the payload to be sent is quite small and one iteration would have served the purpose.

this is causing a performance degradation of about 25% which is quite a big figure as listed below.
[2008-12-11 14:57:17.19] INFO 000000000000 GLOBAL_SCOPE PSHttpServlet process() completed===>2008-12-11 14:57:17.190
[2008-12-11 14:57:17.242] INFO 000000000000 GLOBAL_SCOPE ConduitStreamListener handlenewconnection conn.handle() completed===>2008-12-11 14:57:17.242
here as we can see, even though the processing is complete, still the time take by handle method to finish is about 52 msec.

i believe this is a bug and needs to be fixed. please feel free to suggest any other way which can help to increase the performance.
From forum: Jetty - Java HTTP Servlet Server

Problem Description : My application can run a Buisness Process(BP) or Web application (by deploying war files). For a BP, I can see the HTTP server connection getting closed, as it can understand the response notifications. So connections are registered/unregistered accordingly. But for a web application, whenever connections are made, we dont get notified of the response of the closure part, and consequently the connection doesnt get unregistered.

Do you have any suggestion/solution how to do address it? I guess Jetty process all the requests, so can we recieve some notification when the web applications completes the tasks, so that the threads can be unregistered ?

It creates a new epoch of internet transfers acceleration for large files.
It is well known that the main downloading accelerative ways are P2P and CDN. However, the traditional P2P needs multi-users download at the same time to guarantee its downloading speed.
BT is the most classic example of P2P. But CDN can ensure downloading quality under the circumstance that there are a few downloading users and there is enough bandwidth, but it can’t guarantee the effective service at peak hours because of the limits of the bandwidth. Qoodaa’s downloading resource of technology MNP2P doesn’t have this kind of limits like P2P or BT. Even if there is one user downloading, it can also enjoy the same speed as multi-person use under the condition of P2P downloading.
The main feature of Qoodaa MNP2P isn’t this; the greatest advantages of Qoodaa are in the following two aspects: one is transnational transfers, because of taking the unique MNP2P technology; Qoodaa’s transnational transfer speed is faster several times than the other software. The other greatest feature is in uploading speed, MNP2P unique technology ensures the users upload the utmost speed that is close to the speed of uploading internet, which P2P software doesn’t have.

I have a program which generates a file (at irregular intervals). It dumps this file, with a different name each time, into the same directory on my harddrive.

I would like to know how to upload this generated file (mentioned above) to an ftp, the moment it is dumped into the directory, instantly and automatically (unattended). Is there a SIMPLE solution for this?

Hi,

I have webspace that is used primarily to host an official college website, but is also used as space for students to upload web pages for grading.

I have my own admin password which allows me access to all of the site, with edit privileges.

I want to create another login and password that grants access to the "student" folder alone, which I caqn give to the students without fear of them altering or accidentally deleting the official site.

How can I set this up? Is it possible within WSFTP or other software? Must I get the ISP to set it up?

Thanks.

Hello,

i am working at a university in texas as admin. My problem is as follows :

we basically have a setup for creating course accounts for students on a server. It includes FTP acces to there respective folder on the server to the students. The students have an account on the domain controller. The server which houses the FTP server has the following : Win2003 server, IIS 6.0. The problem here is that when am trying to access a folder through FTP (student course account), i am able to access the folder with the username and password of any user, provided the student has an account on the domain controller. But, only the student to whom the folder belongs to, should get the access and not any user. The partition used in NTFS. And each student folder has been given access to his respective folder by adding the students account to the folder secutity permissions. I tried re-creating the complete FTP website, by selecting the 'Isolate Users' option inside the FTP website creation options, but in this case i am locked in the sence i can create folder for users only inside the FTP root and not anywhere else. Besides the name of the fodler needs to be same as the name of the students, which is not the case in case of our existing folder setup here.

I have theis functionality working on oneof our other servers. On this server, each user is able to access only his own folder or folders inside the FTP, and the folders are not inside the FTP root. Again the partition is NTFS and each user has been added to the folder - security permissions.I tried copying the FTP server contents from the IIS metabase.xml file from this server to the other server on which i amhaving problems, but even that did'nt help.

Please, do let me know if anyone knows anything about this FTP issue. i'll be realy thankfull !!

In our office we have nearly 45 staff.. They all know the different domain ftp password they use to upload and download the files by them self. it has been misused. Now we want to restrict the ftp access from outside the office.

We have shared hosting where we can't give IP restriction in the server. So we need a solution where our staff can't access our server through FTP from outside the company.

I need a solution like with local user name and password it should connect the local server and in that server it should recognize the correct domain and connect the server and upload and download the files. ( In the local server already the original user name and password must be entered )

I need a software which works like this.

Lan ftp <----> Local FTP server<----> Wan ftp

lan ftp should have different user name and password wan ftp should have different user name and password for the same domain.

Is there any solution for ftp works like proxy+ mail?

Thank you in advance...

Hi, there are many providers who can provide you FTP and SFTP but they may offer very high cost that may be you cannot afford. As you are in the search of free platform independent FTP, for this, here is an option that is called www.anyclient.com Secure FTP Server.This is a platform independent managed file transfer server that supports FTP, secure FTP (FTP over SSL), SFTP/SSH, HTTP, HTTPS and WebDAV protocols. It helps in file transfer and may be it will serve you as a good option. I have practically experienced this system and it helps you in automation of file process and serves as a suitable way to transfer files in a secure mode.
Hope my suggestion is useful to you.

Hello,
I am trying to open a connection and append a file to the library using this code:

“FTP
OPEN server
username
password
CD Z80TRN2
ASCII
APPEND C:\lockbox.txt ARPLI”

I put this in a text file and then another batch file using this code:

“ftp -s:upload.txt
pause”

The user is using an excel file, so I made a link to the batch file and the user wants to append several files to the same path so he would run several times the batch file but it is overriding, only when we do it manually and we type several appends that it works, is there a way to do it automatically so that the user can append several times on the same connection opened, or open the connection one time and append as long as required?
