Just thought this might be useful for Woodstox 4.0 users: I wrote the
third part of "Typed Access API" blog entries at Cowtown blog
(http://www.cowtowncoder.com/blog/blog.html); this one covering how to
read/write Base64-encoded binary data.

If anyone has used base64 encoding functionality so far, please let me
know -- I am very interested in feedback.
And I hope to find time to do some benchmarking; implementation is
designed to be very competitive for transferring binary data, relative
to other XML-related approaches (such as using attachments for SOAP
etc); and definitely "efficient enough" for most common use cases.
