Finding form name from element

I am trying to get away from using the old way of doing things, but am trying to figure something out. I can get an items form name by doing document.all.formName.form , how would I dynamically get formName's form value using document.forms or another method? I am creating a javascript calendar that I want to use all over the place and don't want to have to worry about it not working because I am referencing form 0 and its in form 1.
