Firefox Support site & TikiWiki: the future, and how you can shape it: Support.Mozilla.com

To all Tiki contributors,

As most of you know, the support site for Firefox is powered by
TikiWiki: http://Support.Mozilla.com (SUMO)

What fewer people know is that SUMO is currently based on TikiWiki
1.10   We are roughly at revision 21000 in SVN, and SUMO is based on
somewhere around 10 500 (I'm told). So, a lot has changed in about 2
years.

The long term goal for this platform is not just for Firefox support,
but also others like Fennec, Thunderbird, etc. David Tenser calls this
"Open Source Support" .
http://djst.org/blog/2008/01/15/the-scope-of-sumo/

As this fits in perfectly with Tiki goals, the intention is to make a
one-click profile:
http://profiles.tikiwiki.org/Support_Mozilla_com
Further on, I would like to see Mozilla use Tiki for other types of
projects too.

Support.Mozilla.com has as huge load (Over 12 000 000 page views per
week) and performance concerns like no other Tiki installation.
http://blog.mozilla.com/sumo/2009/03/30/the-road-to-sumo-in-retrospect/

I recently met with David Tenser, Firefox Support Manager, a.k.a. the
guy responsible for the SUMO project.
http://djst.org/blog/2009/08/24/marc-laporte-coming-to-town/

Here is the situation:
"SUMO is currently based on TikiWiki 1.10, a two year old version of
Tiki that we've kept adding new features to while applying security
patches and doing partial upgrades from Tiki upstream on select files.
This has resulted in a situation where upgrading to the latest version
of Tiki (currently 3.1, soon 4.0) will mean a lot of work. In order to
find a sustainable solution for SUMO in the long term, we need to
decide on what the next step should be. In making the right decision,
we need to factor in aspects like code quality and sustainability as
well as community health. One thing the three options have in common
is that they all involve a significant amount of work in the short
term, but the question is which one provides the healthiest solution
in the long term."

We are looking for volunteers to help/collaborate with SUMO developers
to port features to Tiki trunk. They have things that work in 1.10 but
need adapting for the more recent code base.

Already luci & Gary have volunteered to port the SUMO theme to Tiki4.
It will be ready in about a week.

There are many other very interesting features here, most of which
were on our wishlist or had been discussed before.

Marta Stojanovic and I might be able to help with some of the i18n
related features, as long as it leaves us with some time to work on the
forward looking features (integration of Machine Translation in
particular).

Fortunately, Marc wasn't specific about what it would be ready for. ;-)

My approach has been to look at the current SUMO site and work up a Tiki
4 theme (actually a theme plus one or more theme options) that emulates
it, with priority on using the default Tiki template files and new site
admin options as much as possible to achieve the correct appearance and
functions. Beyond that, some template modifications will be needed, and
also some of the SUMO code not yet in Tiki impacts page display. These
are outside the scope of this initial effort of course, but updating
theme details shouldn't be a problem as the underlying code takes shape.
