First release-candidate for 0.17.0 -- please test!

Hi,

Although linux kernel 2.6.25 is not out yet, I expect it will be soon.
And as with most linux kernel releases, it breaks the API.
Hance, I just packed the first release candidate for 0.17.0. Of course,
it is supposed to fix compatibility with linux 2.6.25, but it also
introduce some automatic configuration. As usual you can get it from
  http://dxr3.sourceforge.net/download/em8300-0.17.0-rc1.tar.gz

All comments are welcome. Please give it a try and report.

otherwise I have a green overlay. I guess autoconfig is missing details
about my card?

Are you sure you're loading the good adv717x module?
If you still have an old one loaded, it is not expected to work.
If you only load the new em8300 module (or only load it first), it is
expected to trigger an automatic loading of the adv717x ot bt865 module
with modprobe, which will get it from /lib/modules/... ; if it is an old
one, it is not expected to work...

Autoconfiguration is still far from being perfect.

A way to improve it might be to understand a little more about the
content of the on-board EEPROM chip; for this I need some results from
experiences using the Windows driver...

The second point is that the driver apparently could not read the
on-board EEPROM's contents...

I remember someone telling me about such a problem; was that you?

This certainly needs some investigation. the first question is: is there
that EEPROM chip? Do you have a hi-res picture of the components side of
your board?

Nope that wasn't me. But not reading from EEPROM surely doesn't sound

a problem, but appears to be one with your card... :-/

OK. The good news is that the EEPROM chip is here, it is U18 (marked
"HT24C02"), close to the bottom-right corner of the big EM8300 chip.

The other news is that I have a card apparently using the same PCB as
yours, although mine probably is slightly more recent (I'd say that
yours was manufactured on 1999's 22nd week while mine was on the 42nd
week). Your EM8300 chip also is slightly older than mine (18th week for
you, 35th for me). Anyway, I think your card an mine are supposed to
work alike.

Are you able to unsolder a chip (that would be the 8-pin EEPROM chip,
not the 208-pin EM8300 one), or to make some measurements when the
card is running? (A scope would be perfect...)

Wow, that's a lot of information you got there.

Unfortunately I'm a very big electrical noob, I had a hard time soldering two cables together. I really want to help though, so I thought of two possibilities:
1. Send the card to you. From you name I'm guessing you're staying in France and that would probably mean high shipping costs and a long time without any TV in my flat.
2. Take the card to my university and ask the electrical engineers to do the measurement. I can't think of anybody special right now but if the measuring isn't too difficult I'm confident that I'll find someone. Is it hard for you to describe the steps?

The latter option looks better IMO but I don't know when it will happen. Could take quite a few time :/

BTW, if anyone from Germany (or preferably Nuremberg) is reading this and has the equipment, I would appreciate your help very much :)

If you were willing to pay for the sipment, I'd be happy to send you one
of my cards in exchange.

I should definitely investigate on mine, to track signals, so you can
know what to test.
