First try of emacs23 and emacs23-non-dfsg backports for lenny

Hello,

I've got a first version of packages for Lenny built from emacs23 and
emac23-non-dfsg sources. I put binary (i386) and source packages at

#v+
deb http://www.netsys-it.de/rdoering backports/
deb-src http://www.netsys-it.de/rdoering backports/
#v-

The dsc files can directly be downloaded from

http://www.netsys-it.de/rdoering/backports/emacs23_23.1+1-4~bpo50+1.dsc
http://www.netsys-it.de/rdoering/backports/emacs23-non-dfsg_23.1+1-1~bpo50+1.dsc

It't would be great if someone could review these packages.

Regards,
Ralf

Why not using emacs-snapshot?

Because that's not in Debian Testing.

http://emacs.orebokech.com/ provides an apt repository from which to
install emacs-snapshot.  That repository provides builds for both sid
and lenny.  The point was to simply use its repository instead of
putting work into backporting a package that's already being backported
(just not via the backports framework).

Ah, right, I forgot. I played around with it on Lenny months ago,
too. :-)

Ok, I understood it the other way round. (Obviously. ;-)

Thanks for clarification!

That's one point. emacs-snapshot is just a different package. I'd like
to have a backport of the current testing packages, so it could be
included on backports.org. The other point is emacs-snapshot is just
what it name means - a snapshot of current upstream emacs CVS. Even if
the version numbering of the package for lenny has a date in it which
shows that it was taken just before CVS HEAD was declared current stable
emacs23, it is not exactly the current upstream stable version. The
packages for lenny and sid are not even build from the same source, as
the sid packages are what the name suggest: a running snapshot of the
current upstream CVS head.

emacs-snapshot will be great if you want to follow upstream development
via debian packages on sid I think (I do it with selfcompiled binaries
in my own home). I see my backported packages to be useful for those who
want to use emacs23 in lenny and like to profit from the bugreporting
and fixing in sid and testing. The backported packages are build from
exactly the same source as the testing/sid packages. There is only one
simple tweak because install-info is not part of dpkg in testing any
more.

If no one finds something technical about the packages during review I
will seek for a sponsor to include them in backports.

Regards,
Ralf

I've sponsored this emacs23 package and also backported auctex. The
current auctex package in lenny does not support emacs23, and for me,
auctex is the most important reason to use emacs in the first place :-)

Thanks for sponsoring the upload, and thanks to the emacs23 package
maintainers for providing packages which make backporting easy ;) Also
thank you for the auctex package, I did not notice that as I usually run
selfcompiled auctex here.

Ralf
