hi all,

what are the most used mathematical structures in your music?

mine are:

- repetition,

- repetition with slight changes (which follow a certain rule like serialism or a
reading off a given set of dada like musical chords or rythms),

- free running (usually very slow) modulators which perform things like (fractal)
attractors or straight linear ramps,

- modulators or events that affect each other, for example exclude each
other (only 1 of originally 2 generated notes are taken), or the typical modulated
modulator,

- modulators that are linked (simple example: one LFO controls 2 things, much
more complicated structures are possible.).

what do you use the most, or what do you usually start with?

Carlos,

Go to the cnfractal_music files section.
Next open the Tangent folder.
At the bottom, you 'll find a file called T_install.zip.
That's the one.

Download ASAP because I will delete it soon afterwards, not knowing if Paul Whalley would really appreciate this action ... so tell me when you got it!

Hi Phil and all, long time no write!

After a lengthy break I have taken the liberty of re-joining CNFractal and time permitting hope that I will again become a regular contributor both musically and in the groups discussions.

I am soon entering my final year at university (a Bsc in New Media Technology) and my final project will be the production of a CD along with all the accompanying packaging, website etc. and so I am really looking forward to getting involved in computer generated composition again!

Much has changed since the last time I was here. I have been spending a lot of time experimenting with some new software, namely Guenter Haglar's 'X-Wheel of Fortune' range and Intermorphic's 'Noatikl', but have to say that by comparison nothing comes close to the scope and control (not to mention fun!) offered by some of the earlier programs, most notably the wonderful 'Tangent' and 'Gingerbread', which I am having a great time re-discovering.

in the next days i am releasing a modular sequencer system with
100+ modules for data manipulation and realtime composition.

the files will be available at a yahoogroup and i am very curious
for any kind of feedback.

unfortunately it requires a copy of max/msp - and some basic
knowledge about the language to use it, but this way it offers
the highest possible flexibilty. (to be honest, this is the way i
am using it myself ... )

RIP, Tim. I only knew Tim through his web presence and the wonderful
synth presets he made, but he was easy to admire, and it's clear that
everyone who knew him thought the world of him. May he truly rest in

Here are some examples of the fractal tune sloth canons:

With the first three examples, if you speed the tune up a bit, and remove the quietest part, then it sounds the same (except that the volume of the first note depends on the total number of parts in the tune). The tunes also almost repeat. I made the first three to be as fractal as possible with this method.

Anyway if you follow the link there's more there about what makes the tune fractal.

Sorry for delay, I've been working on the program and improving the website, had a lot on. Also thanks for the information about fractint's capabilities for generating penrose tilings using L-systems - I'd come across fractint before but had no idea that it could do penrose tilings.
