There are a lot of ways to promote your website and, unfortunately, a lot of these methods are mistakes. Here is a list of some of the more common mistakes (often referred to as Black Hat SEO) that you should steer well clear of.

1. Bad Neighbourhoods

These sites are also known as free for all (FFA) pages and link farms. They serve no other purpose other than to list tens of thousands of unrelated websites. Not only will these sites not provide your site with any traffic, certain search engines will ban sites who participate.

2. Over Optimization

Optimizing your web pages for a particular search engine can be a good thing. Over-optimizing can defeat the purpose, however. Search engines are catching on quickly to pages that appear 'over-optimized'. Stuffing keyphrases into your pages is the most common problem. Never use hidden (invisible) text to add keywords. You will get caught, and your site will get banned.

3. Doorway Pages

Doorway pages are orphaned web pages that are typically optimized for a particular keyphrase and a particular search engine. They are promoted to the search engine in an effort to achieve high rankings. They are not linked back to by any other page on the website and, as such, search engines are able to flush them out quite easily and penalize the entire site.

4. Traffic Generation Scams

Services that purport to drive lots and lots of traffic to your website are typically not very useful. The traffic tends to come from seedy places like domain names that have lapsed in payment or commonly misspelled domain entries. Most of the traffic that hits these pages is accidental and is therefore of no value to you. Other traffic may come from other participants in the program who are required to visit other websites to gain 'credits' for their own site. Again, this traffic is not targeted and therefore of no value. Some traffic may even be generated by automated software!

5. Shadow Domains

Shadow domains are small, optimized, supplementary websites designed to drive traffic to a different website. The way this works is that an SEO company will design and optimize a website on your behalf. The danger here is that the you do not own this new website; the SEO company does! This means that if the relationship sours, they may choose to redirect this site's traffic to whomever they choose (see #4 above), or even sell the site to one of your competitors! Be very, very careful of this technique, as some supposed search engine 'experts' even use this method (no naming of names here, however).

One final note: Any company that tells you that it can achieve 'guaranteed' rankings is either lying to you or using some of these Black Hat techniques. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee a number one result within (unpaid) search results. When choosing a search engine optimization company to work with, be sure you feel comfortable with them and trust them (e.g. money back guarantee). And if you decide to promote your website yourself, consider yourself a little better educated against these common mistakes.

lightweight tool for checking backward/forward binary compatibility of
shared C/C++ libraries in OS Linux. It checks interface signatures and

Hugh Downs is the most well-known American broadcaster and television host of the last century. Downs made his first television news broadcast in September 1945 from the still experimental studio of WBKB-TV, a station then owned by the Balaban and Katz theater subsidiary of Paramount Pictures. He became a TV regular, announcing for Hawkins Falls in 1950, the first successful television soap opera, which was sponsored by Lever Brothers Surf detergent. Downs became a bona fide television "personality" as Jack Paar's announcer on The Tonight Show from July 1957 until Paar's departure in March, 1962, and then shared hosting until Johnny Carson took over in October 1962.

In August 1958 he concurrently began an eleven-year run hosting the original version of the game show Concentration. He hosted NBC's Today Show for nine years from September 1962 to October 1971. He co-hosted the syndicated television program Not for Women Only with Barbara Walters in 1975 and 1976. He is best known as the co-anchor of the ABC news TV show 20/20, a primetime news magazine program. His closing tagline was, "We're in touch, so you be in touch."A published composer himself, Downs hosted the PBS showcase for classical music, Live from Lincoln Center from 1990 to 1996.

Solutions to debt problems can be simply working debt payments into the budget or getting a consolidation loan. Either method will help to ensure the debt is getting paid and is not going to become a credit problem.

Managing debt is making sure that you do not get too much debt, while also making sure to continue to keep debts in good standing. It is essential to immediate address any problems or else they can cause serious credit damage.

Debt finance management is all about responsibility. When a person is responsible for their debts they are able to make sure they are paid according to the agreement and that they do not fall behind. They understand that should a problem arise they need to handle it and take responsibility for it. Although four out of five U.S. companies use leasing to acquire equipment, many don't know the ins and outs of leasing well enough to negotiate a good deal. By focusing on a few key aspects of the lease transaction, you can save a bundle on your next lease and eliminate potential aggravation.

1: Choose the Right Leasing Partner

The starting point for saving money on your lease is to select the right leasing company. The biggest savings in this area come from saving time and dodging substandard lease transactions. The wrong lessor choice can result in a slow approval, inability of the lessor to deliver, hidden fees, a poorly designed lease transaction or worst. Give this aspect of obtaining a lease your highest priority. To save a bundle on your next lease, you must do your homework in pre-qualifying bidding leasing companies. Look for lessors with: 1) experience and knowledge; 2) good reputations; 3) the ability to perform; 4) helpful business contacts; and 6) a relationship approach. Ask for and get lessor financial information, background information on the key managers, a listing of recently completed leases, and contacts at key funding sources for each leasing company being considered. Review this information and follow up with all contacts provided.

2: Choose the Right Lease

You can rake in big savings by obtaining the right lease for the equipment you are acquiring. When planning your lease financing, determine the top three or four attributes your lease should have. During this process, carefully evaluate the importance of: lease pricing, lease flexibility, balance sheet considerations, equipment obsolescence, the anticipated period of equipment usage, and your firm's credit status. The wrong lease choice can be costly.

Lease pricing is market driven, so get at least three lease bids. Carefully evaluate bids by doing a comparative analysis of discounted cash flows incorporating all anticipated costs and fees. Make sure your lease has favorable end-of-lease options, a reasonable end-of-lease notice period, the ability to relocate equipment by notifying the lessor, the right to terminate the lease early without an onerous charge, and the right to assign the lease to another user under agreed upon conditions. Look for an arrangement that will cover equipment needs for at least the next six to twelve months.

Big savings can be realized by knowing when to select a lease with a bargain purchase option versus a fair market value option. If you know you will be keeping the equipment beyond the initial lease term, a bargain purchase option is usually the most cost-effective alternative. If the equipment is prone to obsolescence or if it is unlikely you will retain the equipment at the end of the lease, consider a lease with fair market value, end-of-lease options.

Know your firm's credit standing. If your firm has been in business for a number of years, is profitable, has a good track record and has a strong balance sheet, it deserves great lease pricing and terms. If your firm has a spotty credit record or weak balance sheet, the challenge is to get the best deal possible. Identify and offer credit enhancements that will make your transaction more attractive. Allow plenty of time to get through the credit review and due diligence process.

3: Ask for Fair Market Value Caps

If you decide that a fair market value lease is the way to go, you can realize big savings by limiting that value. Fair market value rental and purchase options at the end of the lease allow the lessee to either continue leasing the equipment or to buy the equipment at the then fair market value. These values are generally quoted by the lessor at lease end based on aftermarket data, but most leases allow the lessee to obtain an appraisal from a qualified equipment appraiser. To realize significant savings and to eliminate unpleasant surprises, request fair market value options that are "capped" (have upper limits). Beware, however. Lessors may insist on fair market value 'floors' (lower limits) when they agree to 'caps'. The availability of a fair market value cap will depend on the size of the transaction (may not be available on small transactions), competition among lessors, and the credit status of your firm.

4: Keep the End-of-lease Notice and Renewal Periods Short

To avoid hefty unintended lease charges, seek notice and automatic renewal periods that are short. The primary purpose of the end-of-lease notice period is to allow the leasing company sufficient time to redeploy the equipment if you elect to return the equipment. The secondary purpose is to notify the lessor of your plan to either continue leasing the equipment or to purchase it. The notice period generally ranges from one to six months, with three months being typical. If you violate the notice period, the lease kicks into an often unfavorable automatic renewal period, usually one to six months. If the lessor is unwilling to negotiate this provision, you can save money by making sure the notice requirement is fulfilled within the allowed time.

5: Slash Interim Rent

You can slash lease costs significantly by limiting interim rent. Interim rent is the rent you pay for daily use of equipment between the equipment acceptance and lease start dates. The rationale for interim rent is that you have use of the equipment and the lessor is obligated to pay the equipment vendor during this period. While the rationale is not unreasonable, interim rent can balloon lease pricing by arbitrarily extending the term of the lease (albeit by only days). The best approach is to schedule equipment delivery and acceptance toward the end of the month. Most lease terms officially start the first day of the month following equipment acceptance. Another strategy is to negotiate a truncated period at the end of the lease such that the interim period and truncated period total one month of the quoted lease term. A last strategy is to request a limit on interim rent (perhaps ten or fifteen days) regardless of equipment acceptance.

6: Manage Equipment Returns

Save a bundle on your lease by managing the equipment's return. Although you may not anticipate returning the equipment to the leasing company at lease end, it can be costly if you do. When equipment is returned, most lessors care about and will hold your firm accountable for the equipment's condition. Equipment should be properly maintained and returned in good condition. Make sure that you understand the return provision of the lease and that you have good internal controls to adhere to these requirements. If the lease contains an 'all or none' return provision, one strategy is to subdivide the lease into several smaller lease schedules on the front end. Place equipment you are most likely to keep on the same schedules. Try to negotiate the right to return up to 20% of the equipment (based on original value) at the end of the lease, as long as you agree to renew the lease or purchase the balance of the equipment. Track and save all equipment accessories and documentation.

7: Match Lease Term with Projected Equipment Use

The term of the lease should match the expected use of the equipment as closely as possible to save money. If the term is too short, cash outlays for the equipment might exceed the expected equipment benefits over the term. If the lease term is too long, you might lose the flexibility of upgrading to newer more desirable equipment. Notwithstanding your preferences, the term allowed by the leasing company may depend on their perception of credit risk and the expected economic life of the equipment. Any mismatch between your preference and lessor's can be managed by obtaining favorable end-of-lease options.

8. Identify and Understand All Potential Fees

Leasing proposals vary in the types and amounts of fees and penalty charges. Common fees and charges include: commitment fees; non-use fees or facility fees; per schedule documentation charges; attorney fees; UCC financing statements; penalty charges for late rental payments; and early lease termination charges. These are only a few of the possible fees and charges. You can save a bundle by carefully going through each lease proposal and lease agreement to identify and compare likely charges. If fees or charges are significant and likely, they should be incorporated into your pricing analysis. Where possible, especially where one proposal contains fees/charges excluded from the other proposals, try to negotiate these fees/charges.

9. Offer Credit Enhancement to Reduce Lease Rates

In some cases, you can trim lease pricing substantially by offering credit enhancements to improve your firm's credit profile. Enhancements can include: shortening the lease term, cash or other assets as additional collateral, personal or corporate guarantees, advance rentals payments, and security deposits. Since most credit enhancements involve giving up something of value, do a cost/benefit analysis to determine whether the net benefit is in your favor. If your firm has assets that are not working for it why not put them to work in the leasing arrangement. The value of credit enhancements can differ from lessor to lessor, so identify and discuss possible enhancements upfront. Try to assess whether your firm's credit will improve significantly by credit enhancements and get lessors' pricing with and without the credit enhancements.

10. Request Several End-of-lease Options

If the lease contains a nominal purchase option, there is little need for additional end-of-lease flexibility. Otherwise, flexible end-of-lease options can save you a bundle by preventing you from incurring extra expense. One of the most cost-effective options is the ability to return the equipment at the end of the lease. If you no longer need the equipment, why incur additional charges? Additionally you should have the ability to purchase the equipment at a fair or reduced price and the right to continue leasing the equipment at a fair or reduced rent. As discussed, use of caps in fair market value purchase or rental options can greatly reduce potential costs at lease end.

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.19 Announcement and OCAL10K Goal Exceeeded

March 31, 2009 - Release 0.19 of Open Clip Art Library
(http://www.openclipart.org), containing over 12,000 high quality scalable
vector graphics (SVG) files released into the public domain by over a 1000
artists, is now available for download and use. In celebration of this
accomplishment, since OCALâs last release happened in 2005, and March
being 5th anniversary of the Open Clip Art Library (OCAL), the OCAL
community set a goal to achieve 10,000 uploaded pieces of vector graphics.
The project achieved this with the 10,000th submission from user Boobaloo
who uploaded a graphic of an onion. The project congratulates Boobaloo for
uploading the 10,000th upload. Also, project congratulates all artists who
have uploaded in this anniversary OCAL10K sprint.

The project congratulates Nicu who personally crossed the 500 clip art
upload barrier and now has 696 pieces of clip art uploaded to the system.
All efforts towards the OCAL10K goal helped boost the siteâs
registrations and focus on releasing monthly packages once more to make
this project a flowing river of clip art uploads. Since all contributions
to the project are released into the public domain via the Creative
Commons Public Domain Dedication, anyone may use the Open Clip Art Library
files for any use including collections, to make money, and to generate
compositions. However, the community encourages anyone who uses the clip
art to provide attribution back to the original clip art in the form of a
link or to announce the use of the clip art in some form.

For the month of April in lead up to the annual Libre Graphics Meeting
2009 in Montreal, May 5-9, 2009, the Open Clip Art Library is setting a
goal to achieve 12,000 pieces of uploaded clip art related to spring time,
release the 0.20 package of clip art, and to update the siteâs software

Security for desktop apps

Hi,
I'm curious what work has been done on security desktop apps using
things like SELinux and AppArmor or equivalents on other OSs.

At the moment it seems to be the norm for apps to both read and
change their config files if they have them and that seems to offer
the potential for malware to exploit a bug in an app to make it
easily propagate to the next invocation of the app.

My general thoughts were that it would be better if the 'preferences'
item on an app were to exec a separate executable that was somehow
flagged as having permission to fiddle with the config but didn't
deal with file or network data; I realise though that potentially
that's tricky given that some apps currently include plugin data or
status data in the same config file.

I'd also be interested if similar work has been done for any other
dot files (I'm thinking things like bashrc or profile).

Do things like gconfd know what app is talking to them securely
so that an app can only tweak things relavent to it?

Any thoughts or pointers to existing stuff appreciated.

Mailing list creation

Hi all,

I filed a request on bugs.f.o that games@ and games-commit@ should
be created. The background is that the Debian Games Team and some
Fedora games people have been working together for some time, but
using the Debian lists for this is not ideal. Especially since we want to
invite more distros to join forces as soon as the lists are set up.

I wanted to check on the status of my request and am simply unable
to find it in bugzilla. Unless I am doing something terribly wrong, it
has simply disappeared. If you want to look for yourself, I used the
address I am sending from on the bugzilla.
I thought that perhaps the lists have been created, but after waiting
for two days, I can still not find anything.

This means NULL was passed to dbus_connection_ref(), perhaps because
dbus_connection_open() or dbus_bus_get() failed and someone isn't

X is only used in some fallback code to try to find dbus-daemon if
dbus-daemon isn't found via the normal mechanisms. Normally X would
never be an issue.

For a session bus, DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS should be set, for example.

The problem is that you have no dbus running, or no way (such as the
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS env variable) for the app to find the dbus
that's running. X and DISPLAY are not the root cause of your problem,
and should not be necessary.

I am trying to use d-bus (client) inside a CGI perl environment where X11 DISPLAY is not set.

From Apache error log, I got

It matches what I think users want. The problem I see with this solution
is that each applications should use the GTK+ print dialog, and many
applications aren't, like KDE applications, and even OpenOffice. How
could we manage that?

If every toolkit manages their own printer lists, then the user may have
to define them in multiple places, and we should avoid that.

If multiple frontends are available to configure the same printer groups
preferences, then it make sens.

I see few possibilities :
* Provide a new layer on top of libcups and update every print panel.
This will need a huge effort from a large number of people. It's
unlikely to work except if it becomes a freedesktop standard ;)
* Provide a kind of "client cups proxy" that manage printers groups, and
configure cups clients to that proxy.
* Adding group feature to cups client library itself.

Each solutions have their own advantages and downside. First, is there
other solutions? Then, which is the best solution?

Hi,

I would like to discuss issues with printer list displayed to users
within open source desktop.

In large environment, the cups printer list may get very long, and we
need a way to display only relevant printers to the user.

There are so much printing panel out there, and they are not using a
printing framework other than libcups. So, I changed the libcups library
to return only printers defined in a configuration attribute. (Well, the
code itself is not high quality, but it shows the concept)

Bitmap program : misbehavior

Hello,

I have been using the bitmap program for several years, for teaching
purpose (introductory to elementary principles of information coding).

At present, the program does not behave any longer as it should do :
- after having clicked one of the drawing buttons (Point, Curve, Line,
etc.) no drawing occurs inside the canvas area of the main window.

This misfunction is observed when running xorg servers (Linux), and when
running a Windows commercial server (XWin32) as well.

I did some simple trials, but could not find out what goes wrong :
- when launched on a second server (started as 'X :1 &') on a Linux
workstation, bitmap WORKS PERFECTLY.
- when launched on the main server (started by gdm) on a Linux
workstation, bitmap DOES NOT REACT to clicks in the canvas, even when
the RESOURCE_MANAGER property is empty.

I could not find a replacement program to bitmap responding to our
requirements.
So, I would really really appreciate any help for making bitmap working
fine again !
