FreeIPMI on windows

Hey Al and the list,

Do you know if there are binary packages available somewhere for Windows?
Or do you have any plan to make official packages?

My 2 French fellows below are considering this build, for NUT IPMI support (Fred) and inventory (Gonéri, for Fusion Inventory).
Having a MSI package would boost FreeIPMI on Windows.

This would be interesting to share loads and results there.
Fred has some MSI knowledges (NUT is available in MSI format), but has not much time.

cheers,
Arnaud

Arnaud,

There are binary packages available for Windows of ipmiutil, built with each release, see http://ipmiutil.sourceforge.net.   It has all of the IPMI features that you see in freeipmi.   It is currently not packaged in an MSI, but will be soon.

Andy

FreeIPMI compiles and runs fine under cygwin for remote access to BMC's. Since you have to distribute some of the cygwin DLL's you sooner or later run into problems with different DLL versions if other tools use cygwin too.

The only native IPMI Win32/Win64 solution available for free I am aware of is IPMIutil (see Andy's  response).

And of course you can ask the vendor of your systems if they have some Windows tools.

Best regards,

Holger

No present plans to support Windows.  I'm more than happy to, but my
experience/knowledge with supporting Windows is very small, so I'd have
to rely on others supplying me w/ patches.  Even if I did find some time
to learn it, I don't have access to a Windows machine w/ IPMI.  So I
can't even test anything I try.

sad to hear it, but thanks for letting me know.
I'm not currently able to allocate resources on this, but will keep it in mind.

that said, we should to treat our needs separately:

- NUT uses FreeIPMI (libs easily available on the major target system, Linux) for its nut-ipmi driver (already done).
I've designed this driver to be able to support different backends, so I'm considering the option of also relying on ipmiutils and OpenIPMI.

- Fusion inventory can use the available generic IPMI tools available (Ie, not nut-scanner) through wrappers, or an embedded version.

cheers,
Arnaud

thanks for this info.
do you have any approx. timeline for the MSI?

do you plan to distribute libs too (a -dev package)?
that's currently one of the main ipmiutil drawback on Linux (apart from not being a GNU project ;)

my needs are developer ones, not end users, at first ;-)

A: Plan is later this month (Dec) for ipmiutil-2.8.0

A: Libs for Linux and Windows are built as part of the make, but not packaged.  That packaging could be done as a –devel package, but probably will not make the December release.

Regarding FusionInventory Agent on Windows, we already provide an installer
built with NSIS.

So, we will just embed the IPMI and nut binary within.

Arnaud,

The ipmiutil-2.8.0 release did go out today with the MSI, see http://ipmiutil.sf.net

And the Linux -devel package is included as well.
