Further to my just sent email ...

I've just discovered that my 4D Help folder and Plugins (containing
the 4D Internetcommands.bundle) are within the same folder as my 4th
Dimension application.

So why aren't they working?

Any help appreciated.

Hi Michael,

I usually put my plugins next to the data file and structure, but that's
just personal preference.  I work on lots of databases in many versions and
it helps me keep it all straight.

There are several vendors that offer some kind of SMTP quick send, but the
4DIC plugin provided by 4D for free works just fine for most instances.  You
can download it here:
ftp://ftp.4d.com/PRODUCTS/4D/Current/4D_2004/MacOS/4D_Internet_Commands.dmg

Documentation is available here: http://www.4d.com/docs/ICU/ICU00002.HTM

Their example on SMTP_QuickSend should get you going in 5 minutes or less.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

That was quick!  I was about to go to bed as it's 11.35 pm Thursday
here in Sydney, Australia.

Same with the Help File as well?

I downloaded the above file successfully and placed this plugin in
with the Data and Structure file. I restarted the database, but still
nothing. I even restarted my iMac, but still nothing.

Yes, I know. The thing is, it used to work before installing the
upgrade to 2004.8.

I'm going to bed now, but I will check my email in the morning.

Again, thanks for your response.

Warm regards,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Yes, the folder Plugins next to the structure file.  I don't use the help
much, so I'm not sure there, but my guess is it would be the same.

Thanks,
Mike

I moved my Plug_ins folder from the 4D applications folder to my Data
and Structure file of my Database (Does that mean I should do this to
my other DataBase as well? I have two independent Database for tow
totally different purposes.)

When I ran it this time, I get this error message: "License or
privilege error  (NL)   4D Internet Commands  (NL)  The plug-in method
cannot be executed. "

Any thoughts what I should do now?

Later on today, I going to retrieve 4D 2004.7 from my back up and see
if the problem disappears. I'll let you know.

Warm regards,

Michael

Hi Michael,

I would make separate copies of the plugins folder for each database.

The error is interesting, almost as though something is locked.  4DIC is
free the last time I checked, so maybe you having something going on with
your users and groups where you need to allow access?  Seems pretty strange.

It's "Plugins".. exactly.. "plugins" also works.. no other variants..
I see from your message that you may have called it "Plug_ins"..

Beyond that, 4D is sensitive to the version of the plugins, so make sure you are using everything from the same version.

I.e. 4Dv2004.8 requires 4DICv2004.8 - easiest way to confirm this is simply download everything from the FTP site and install a new set.

I've checked the application file (using command+I) to ensure the Info
file has the 4D Interne have been added and ticked and I've even made
all groups have read and write access.

But still no joy.

SMTP_QuickSend is seen as a variable by 4D.

I'm baffled. All I did was upgrade from 2004.7 to 2004.8 and then my
problems arose.

Even getting the 2004.7 from my back up disc and using it no longer
works.

I used Plug-ins because that's how the error message put it.
Interestingly, when you look up information on 4th Dimension.app, it
also says "Plug-ins"!
But the folder I've used is named - "Plugins".

Excuse my ignorance, but I have no idea what to do here. How do I get
to the FTP site? What is 4DICv2004.8?

I really appreciate your efforts guys.

Hi Michael,

That link I sent takes you there,
ftp://ftp.4d.com/PRODUCTS/4D/Current/4D_2004/MacOS/

This is the folder with the "current" release, which would be 2004.8

Thanks,

I downloaded this file and placed its contents in (1) the Plugins
folder next to 4th Dimensions.app in the applications folder and (2)
in my database folder where the .4DB, .4DD, .4DL, .4DR and .4RSR files
are kept.

Again, no success with the the SMTP_QuickSend command.

I then got up the  "Get Info" window for the 4th Dimension application
and there is an options called "Plug-ins". When I click on the "+"
button, a window labelled Add '4th Dimesnion.app' Plug-ins appears
with the option to choose the plugin. The only problem is that it
takes me to a folder labelled "English lproj" containing two files
which have nothing to do with the 4D InternetCommands.Budnle.

Where do I go from here?

Michael.

Hi Michael,

Did you try re-tokenizing the calls to the plugin?  I'm sure you've typed
them a bunch, but it's a potential gotcha.

If all else fails, I'd contact 4D tech support. It sure sounds like
everything is in the right place.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your persistence in following this through with me.

By re-tokenizing the calls to the plugin, do you mean retyping the
word SMPT_QuickSend to ensure it is being picked up?

If this is what you mean, I've tried that, but no joy.

I'm convinced it has something to do with 2004.8 because
SMPT_QuickSend was working happily with 2004.7.
All I did was upgrade and bang ... now it's not working.
However, even re-installing 2004.7 now doesn't like my SMPT_QuickSend
command.

I'm wondering if there is some preference file I should get rid of and
allow 4D to create a new one.
But I'm not sure which one to try without cause more troubles.

I'll try 4D tech, but I'm not hopeful.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Michael
