Now that I think of it, Yahoo Groups offer the same kind of feature. I slightly prefer Google groups from the user-interface point of view.

If people are too reluctant to switch to a forum, you can see the good
practices of squeezebox's forums (http://forums.slimdevices.com/) which
marry happily mailing-lists and forums IIRC.

I think at this point it's just way too late to change forum
software/interface. you'd have to transfer the accounts (which you
probably couldn't do) and it's just a general pain.

I'm a +1 to moving to the forums. i prefer the mailing list, but then
i'm not someone who would be asking questions (well, maybe sometimes
:)). if people really want to help out budding MBz's then i think it's
a necessary 'evil' (and it's not that bad - the forum software is
pretty good IMO).

This one, I have to contest. Searching/browsing is true, at least for
older messages. However, if forums are clearer to read, your mail
application is doing something wrong. 8)

I'm serious. After about five messages forums tend to become
unreadable mess. Part of it is related to shortcomings of the forum
software, some of it is because of the culture. Neither one is
specific to MusicBrainz, as all forums seem to follow the same,
moronic mode of operation, and users in general tend to follow the
same behavioral patterns, which were probably put in place by the
first pre-pubescent web forum user in AOL back in 1997.

I meant: using a web interface. Of course a good local mail client is better (offering a threaded view like TB)
