Hi All,

In case anyone is going down to Santa Cruz at the end of January, Electro Automotive (one of the leaders in the EV industry) is having a battery seminar.

Cheers,
Tim

Subject: EV Battery Tech Seminar

Continuing its 18 year history of presenting educational seminars and workshops on electric vehicles, Electro Automotive is proud to present the EV Battery Tech Seminar.  This seminar is for people who already have the basic level of information on EV conversions and are looking for more technical detail on batteries.  This is information based on firsthand research and experience - not speculation or hype - from knowlegdeable experts with many years in their fields. The seminar will consist of three 2-hour sessions, with breaks between and plenty of opportunities to ask questions. The presenters represent the highest caliber of firsthand knowledge about batteries in actual service in electric vehicles.

The opening segment will focus on lead acid batteries. Jim Ramos of American Battery will speak.  Mr. Ramos has been in the lead acid battery business for 36 years, and has been involved with electric conversions for 30 years. For twenty years, he was a manufacturer of lead acid batteries under his own label, researching the internal architecture of the batteries to modify their structure and optimize them for specific applications. He has also designed and built battery manufacturing equipment. His client list has included major companies such as FedEx and Waste Management. He currently supplies batteries all over the United States, and has supplied more batteries for EV conversions than any other battery supplier.

The second segment will focus on lithium batteries.  Dr. Andrew Burke of the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis will speak. Since 1974, Dr. Burke’s research has involved many aspects of electric and hybrid vehicle design, analysis, and testing. He was a key contributor on the US Department of Energy Hybrid Test Vehicles (HTV) project while working at the General Electric Research and Development Center. He continued his work on electric vehicle technology, while Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Union College and later as a research manager with the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). Dr. Burke joined the research faculty of the ITS-Davis in 1994. He directs the EV Power Systems Laboratory and performs research and teaches graduate courses on advanced electric driveline technologies, specializing in batteries, ultracapacitors, fuel cells and hybrid vehicle design. Dr. Burke has authored over 80 publications on electric and hybrid vehicle technology and applications of batteries and ultracapacitors for electric vehicles.

The final segment will focus on battery containment in the vehicle.  Mike Brown of Electro Automotive will speak. Mr. Brown has been in the electric vehicle components supply businss for thirty years. Previous to that, he studied engineering at the University of Wyoming, and was a dealership trained auto technician who later operated his own auto repair shop from 1975 to 1993. At that time, he closed the gas car shop to focus on EVs full time. He has built both gas and electric race cars, personally built dozens of conversions, and consulted on hundreds more. He designed and developed the Voltsrabbit and Voltsporsche custom bolt-in conversion kits, which are still the most complete kits available anywhere. He authored the book Convert It, now in its third edition, which is the definitive how-to conversion manual, used as a text in numerous high schools and universities and supplied by the Dept. of Energy to schools participating in the Mid-Atlantic Electic Vehicle Challenge.
