The apps also do not work from the command line or from a console.

P.S.: What I had suggested once to the brilliant "hackers" out there who are responsible for the wonderful development in Linux (and others) that much energy is being dissipated in 're-inventing' common things. While what is needed is to develop common units, and then deploy them suitably whether it is gnome. kde, xfce, windows, or whatever .... The advantage then will be huge. The point has already been proven that through GNU what the opensource movement can achieve, creating *nix that is not UNIX ! It is wonderful and I salute them all.
