Re: Fwd: Agile Testing Days 2010 - Call for PapersHere is my brief introduction into Agile testing, it's free and it's weather proved
1. Automate everything you can across all applications that you need to test. Do it horizontally: cover all application features without drilling into very specific and complicated scenarios (the more complex automation, the more it's complicated to maintain, debug and later analyze test results - it's more expensive) 2. Meanwhile write test plans, if you have engineering specs, perfect! No specs still write test plans working with someone who is expert in the particular feature. it could be professional services, tech support or seasoned QA engineer. Note: for Agile don't write traditional waterfall test plans. Takes too much time and your qa team will not catch up with frequent releases typical for Agile. If you have specs, just convert them into test plans, modifying how it should work into how to tests it. Don't forget negative test cases! Store all your test plans in database (Sharepoint is superb). 3. Now here is a catch with Agile and limited qa resources (typical). Can your team execute All test plans (100% coverage) in Agile? No. Release every 2 or 3 weeks will not allow it most of the time. That's were Horizontal Automation comes into power. First round of tests once QA team received new staging build, goes through Horizontal Automation, that will go through all application features and will determine overall state of the build. It's like physical checkup if you wish with the your home physician. Usually if automation runs smoothly withoiut hick-ups and and passes 80-90% it tells that build is ready to be QAed. I personally usually wait for few more cycles of staging builds before passing Candidate A build to QA team for Vertical (features rich tests) Tip: have number of hours for each test plan to be executed, so that you know exactly how many man hours your team need to complete all tests plans assigned for the current production release. The important point is to have full coverage during 2 production cycles. By good test planning it is easy to achieve (so far MS Sharepoint is the best management tool i have ever worked with) 4. Define set of rules for each QA process within QA team for staging release, production release, hot fix release. Ask every QA engineer to display printed set of rules, so that they don't miss anything. The rules could include how to log defects, how to follow up with the status of defects, how to test positively and negatively, special areas of importance, etc. 5. Write good and comprehensive QA Manual and publish it on QA Wiki pages. 6. Automation results should be stored in database and always available Here is just a quick set of tips. It helped me to manage and direct various QA teams in the past few years, by brining messy and buggy software to the reliable and robust applications with state of the art QA team. Remember: Organization Dedication Automation (ODA) three major components for group of people i work with. Cheers! ________________________________ From: Lisa Crispin <lisa.crispin@...> To: agile-testing@...
