I've tried a repair/rebuild, but the problem remains.

Not sure if I understand this. Trash the Data file? How am I supposed
to get all my information back on the database? Am I missing something?

4D Tools says the database is OK, but it's not!
Identical problems exist on two TABLES. One has one record I can't
delete; the other has 99 records I can't delete.
It's driving me insane.

Even after I do a compact, file names change (originals have a "_"
added, new creations have "-2" added).
But when I try to run it, it says my log file is not compatible.
I don't the find manuals helpful in getting through the changes it
makes when making repairs and what to do in simple terms that amateurs
like me can understand.

I'm thinking I may be forced to create two new tables with their forms
etc and relegate the corrupted tables to "invisible" and hope they
don't interfere with the database again.

I prefer to solve the problem rather than do a fix around.

Any further ideas?

Michael.

My next step would be to get the record number of the bum record and then
play arroud with trying to delete the record using the record number as
reference.

Try this technote, you can export all your current data out, throw away the datafile, create a new one, and bring all your data back in.

I would just try exporting the bad table and make sure you then delete all
the records to see if it goes away.  Make sure you have set the properties
on the table to COMPLETELY DELETE. Then import the table and see what
happens.  If that fails then you are only left with a complete export import
of each table.

Also, be real carefull of your export form to make sure its perfictly
alligned.  Best to just create one from scratch and not use any form that
already exists. Of course, make a complete copy of your database before
trying anything.

Hi mehboob,

I've just sent an email to 4D addressed to Tom thinking he was the one
who informed me about the technote. I apologise for the mix up.

See what I wrote to Tom re-solving my problem. (Not the best way,
perhaps, but it's done.)

Warm regards,

Michael

Hi Tom,

Unfortunately, the first option didn't work.

At this point in time, I wasn't sure really what to do with the
complete export import option.

I read the article you suggested, but I just didn't feel confident to
use it.

I have exported a good back up copy of the table and then imported
that back up into a newly created table.

There was only one form to copy over and now it works.

I removed the form from the old table so it would interfere with the
new one, but of course, the old table still exists and an annoying
reminder.

Thanks to yo and all who spent the time emailing me.

Warm regards,

Michael

PS.  Tom, If you wouldn't mind answering these questions ...
(1) How do you create a Log File of the Database. I've discovered that
when I change the data file, I can't use it because the Log File
doesn't match or something.
(2) When I fix an error via 4D Tools and the original data has a "-"
at the end of the name while the new data has "-2" attached to the end
of the file name.
How do I match the database with the new data created (as well as the
log file as mentioned above)?

I have not used log files so can't help much on that.  When you use the
tools and create a new database the new files will have -2 appended.  When
you open a 4D database if you hold down the control key it will prompt for
database to use and then once you have selected it it will remember the
association.

Just remove the originals, I usually ZIP them and delete the original files, to avoid 4D accidently (or intentionally) opening the previous version.
Then just rename the repaird database files back to their original name that the structure is expecting to see.

Hi Tom,

I thought the log files were essential, that's why I've hung onto them
for so long. They have always caused me issues whenever I had to make
changes to a data file.

I've now turned it off in preferences and hopefully I won’t have to
worry about it anymore.

Thanks for your help.

Michael

Hi Mehboob,

it seems I have a couple of options now.

Thanks for your input.

Michael.
