Geeks in Residence

Geeks. Hosts. Sharing.

**WHAT IS IT?**

The Geek in Residence pilot program connects ‘geeks’ (by which we
mean technically confident artists and creatively confident
technicians) with arts organisations through a temporary subsidised
secondment scheme.

The purpose of this fund is for the Australia Council to enable
digital artists and technicians to share their skills and experiences
with arts workers. Geeks will be able to share their passion for
solving unknown technological problems in creative situations, and
arts workers will feel better equipped to work in digital spaces. Both
will ultimately initiate ‘digital innovation’.

For more information see Geeks in Residence
<http://artsdigitalera.com/?q=node/34>

 Digital Cultural Fund

New crowds. New artwork. Happening live.

**WHAT IS IT?**

The Digital Culture Fund is a pilot initiative for people who have
been working creatively with digital technologies for some time. They
might be experienced artists already within the Australia Council's
community, already supported by one of our grants or divisions. But we
also want to open up to a new breed of practitioner, the digital
native who might not typically consider themselves artists or
ordinarily approach the Australia Council.

The purpose of this fund is for the Australia Council to support the
creation of innovative digital artwork which might happen physically
in front of the crowd or be experienced through a technological
platform. Either way, we want it to happen live, having been created
as a live collaboration, or to be experienced as a live event
connecting the maker(s) and crowd(s).

For more information see Digital Cultural Fund

Man, this is fantastic!  Now geeks can join the ranks of the barely paid... whoops I
mean artists.

The Geek in Residence program is a fantastic idea, however they have approached this
from the Arts funding angle.  No great surprise, it is the Australia Council whom I
have on good word can be a right pain to work with.  Plus from the looks of this
document it's a fair bit flighty and seems to have been written by someone who came
in spouting web2.0 and social media.

But this is a step in the right direction, I do hope some good comes out of it.
Thanks for sharing Kat!

At least they're trying to connect. I've never seen an Arts-funding
spec before that said they're targeting people who don't consider
themselves to be artists :)

Whoa, this is great. Very forward thinking - I am really enjoying the
increasing blurring of the lines between technology and the arts, which is
actually what video games are all about, right?

Games are a fairly different beast to the arts. You can use technology
as a medium for creating art (interactive or otherwise), but that
doesn't necessarily make it a game.

So no, I personally wouldn't say they're all about that.

I agree with Chris -  the lines of what is considered "art" are so
blurred these days and if the differentiation between
film/art/games/entertainment disappears even more, I'll be all the
happier for it. I think this callout was a step in teh right direction
for sure.

Games can be art, but the intention of a game is to be a game, not
simply a melding of art and technology. If that's all a game becomes, it
gets slapped with the age-old tag of multimedia.

My definitions: A game is a set of created challenges to be overcome,
resulting in victory, or defeat. Art is designing for aesthetics. :)

I think the idea of the fund is just to help merge technical art with
more traditional art, probably with no thought for interactivity or
the like.

It will be interesting keeping an eye on it, but I think us Gamers and
Game Devs will be too 'edgy' for them. ;)

I would have enjoyed Art School a whole lot more if it *did* involve
some designing for aesthetics.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to be more "edgy" than the postmodern
artists that got shoved at us as icons to aspire to, eg Judy Chicago
and her menstrual art or Piero Manzoni who canned his own poo and
called it a work of art in 1961. Shocking the audience and messing
with their heads was what we were encouraged to aim for. Someone at my
school planned to make a sculpture with his own frozen semen. By the
end of the semester he still hadn't collected enough and so he
abandoned the project, lol. A pity, it would have been the perfect
example of the "art wank" we were being taught to do.

If you think art and games are different and mutually exclusive
things, then where do projects like this fit:

http://anitafontaine.com/index/index.php?/project/cutexdoom/

I especially loved her Ghostgarden project:
http://anitafontaine.com/index/index.php?/project/ghostgarden/

Anita gets OzCo funding on a regular basis - do you think her work has
no thought for interactivity or the like?

I think that's the sort of thing they want to see - a complete
disregard for the boundaries between games/art/film/multimedia, where
the concept is key and the media used is whatever best works to
execute the intention.

I think one of the important components of the games is the aesthetics part of it. Games are amalgam of aesthetics and rules. Creating the characters and environments in a way to be attractive and influential is the artists' job and creating the challenges and rules is the programmers' and developers' job which itself is a kind of art in a general sense of arranging things in a way to engage minds and emotions.

So, for creating some memorable and impressive games, working these groups of artists (aesthetics artists and programming artists) with each other is inevitable.

I love those art wank examples, Kat :) Back when I did my art schooling,
the guy who poured honey over a rock in the middle of a desert (shame it
wasn't a dessert) was a favourite.

Okay, I'm kidding :) I don't think anyone's saying games are mutually
exclusive, as if games can't be art.

Generally the art that has withstood the test of time is remembered as a cultural artefact- something that can tell us about the society (or art society). Often they're the "statement" pieces. That's why I consider art to be an attempt by the artist to communicate something, whether it's a person's wealth, or that "fine art" is a massive wanky joke ;)

Which is interesting, considering that's what the whole "serious games" thing is trying to do: create games with a message.

Whereas commissioned work falls under the "design" category for me. When a friend and I were both studying Multimedia, we said that the difference between our disciplines (she doing art, me doing design) was that she could answer the project brief in any way she wanted, while I had to adhere to it quite closely. So when the commercial success of a game is the most important thing to consider, and they are designed with that in mind, they cease becoming "art," and instead become a "product.

Agree? Disagree? Who cares, we want to make them :)

Re: [PIGMI] Fwd: New Opportunities - Geeks in Residence & Digital Cultural Fund Does any one has ideas of how gaming would work with creating live performance/theatre? My particular interest being performances created for young audiences – who are big gamers.
There are a couple of inter-relations:
  • aesthetics
  • engaging minds and emotions
  • story – traditionally in theatre, there isn’t a great deal of interactivity where the audience has active choices within a framework, which is where I think the exploration of gaming and performance would be interesting.
  • Characters

I believe the Ozco funding is recognising that digital arts (be it gaming or other) is a valid art-form and is interested in pushing the whole artistic community to explore inter-relationships and where they could possibly lead.

What a wonderful suggestion, Kath - I'm so happy to find that there are people on this list from theatre. I hope you get some takers :)

This is the time to be thinking outside the proverbial box.

I feel like I'm hogging this thread ;) But I can't help this as I have a shared background in games and theatre!

A lot of theatre does actually encourage interaction, but a lot of public who aren't "theatre people," get very frightened of this. I took my boyfriend (gamer) to see a pantomime, and he was so excited that he could potentially change the live performance through interaction... and then sat there like a rabbit in the headlights. He didn't even participate with "he's BEHIND YOU"!

I'd theorise that it's the anonymous nature of the player in a lot of games, combined with a very understood toolkit of how to play (the rules and constraints) that gives them comfort. It's only really sandbox games that actually allow a huge variation in the plotline (this is if any plotline exists), otherwise they're on the same level as a Murder Mystery Night. They're certainly not forum theatre, although this might be an interesting way of structuring a performance. Gamers certainly understand the concept of, "you died, try again." Integrating this fractured storyline, perhaps as a way of showing the wrong/the right choice of actions of a player, might be structurally understandable, and allow for variations and interactivity.

Using a cyclorama with a more detailed projection might also be useful... Or an interactive character projected on there, used like a puppet. Game players are used to seeing images mediated through a screen, so they shouldn't have a problem with this sort disembodied character :)

Hope this helps, feel free to email me, otherwise we'll leave it up to the group en masse to disagree with my claims about gamers! :D

Ellen
