Somebody should really get paid every time a vpn client post comes up
on this list. They'd be a bazillionnaire by now.
So here's my most recent VPN story.
I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite L305D laptop. It's got an AMT
Turion X2 64-bit processor. I dumped Windows Vista and installed
Ubuntu Hardy Heron.
On the whole, I'm pretty happy. Most things worked out of the box
(even the on-board web cam!). A few things, as always, took a bit of
Googling (wireless, integrated mic). The on-board card reader doesn't
work (TI refuses to provide firmware for Linux ... same old story),
but I don't really need it.
Then I started installing software. Tried to install Cisco VPN, same
old procedure - get the old OIT client. Take out the rootcert and
profiles. Get a new version of Cisco VPN. Attempt to make. Fails to
compile. Google. Hack Makefile. Hack a couple c files. Make. Works.
Then I run the vpnclient connect command and get a seg fault. What?!
After a bit of Googling it turns out that Cisco VPN client is not
supported under 64-bit AMD processors. WHAT?! Has Cisco colluded with
Intel or something?
So I'm wondering if anyone has gotten vpnc to work on Ubuntu.
Also, there were rumors on this list that OIT is doing away with VPN.
When is that going to happen? I'm sure a good number of people would
breathe a sigh of relief not having to hack the vpn client every time
a new kernel comes around.
